Abstract

A variety of approaches exist in foreign language teaching and learning; one of them is Task-based Learning (TBL). It is an innovative approach that is developed from the Communicative Approach. The concepts of TBL have proven successful in classrooms. In this study, the writer conducted a literature review of task-based learning in teaching English dealing with the benefits and problems in the implementation of this approach in Indonesia. This paper seeks to review Task-based Learning (TBL), covering the definition of 'task' and Task-based Learning (TBL), the characteristics and stages of TBL, the teacher and students' roles in Task-based Learning, and also the advantages and disadvantages of Task-based Learning. It also addresses the application, the benefits and problems of Task-based Learning in the sense of Indonesian EFL context. This will help educators and language teachers in Indonesia to attach more importance to the contextual differences when applying Task-based Learning in Indonesia.

Abstract

Communication is a way to interact with others and also a process of delivering information from the speaker to the hearer. As stated that pragmatics is compatible with communicative functions because pragmatics is the study of how language is used in communication. In formal conversations, Grice's cooperative principles are still relevant to apply. The principle of cooperative by Grice is divided into four maxims those are 1) maxim of quality, 2) maxim of quantity, 3) maxim of relevance, 4) maxim of manners. This research is about the principles of cooperative delivered by speakers and hearer related to the data obtained. Therefore, the writers aim to describe the principles of cooperative used in the group of middle-aged women's conversation during the wedding cooking tradition in Salayo. The research is conducted by using a qualitative research methodology. The purpose of this research is to describe the application of the cooperative principles in the conversation of among middle-aged women during the cooking tradition in Salayo. The data used in this study were taken or sourced from a group of middle-aged women's conversation during the cooking tradition in Salayo. In discussing the analysis' results the researchers obtained data in the form of records and field notes, both in the form of descriptions and reflections. The results found in this research are two forms of cooperative principle, those are the maxim of quantity and quality. A number of utterances found are categorized as violations of the maxims if it is based on Grice''s theory, however, that does not apply to the utterances in a group of middle-aged women in Salayo during the cooking tradition. It is because there are social and cultural contexts that must be considered when understanding and analysing these utterances.

Abstract

Along with the unprecedented advancements made in the sphere of English Language Teaching (henceforth ELT), the practitioners and educators have felt an undeniable demand of redesigning the teaching, learning, and evaluation strategies which have been dominating the teaching and learning process of EFL/ESL classes for the time unknown. Therefore, this field of education now puts its emphasis on enhancing learners' capacity of taking responsibilities of their own learning, which in turn promotes learner autonomy. All these changes contribute, to a large extent, to the promotion of pragmatic knowledge based learning to bring both the teacher and learners out from the erudite stereotypical practice of traditional assessments in the form of tests and examinations; hence, they are now in favor of alternative assessment that supports the notion of formative assessment. One of the most recognized tools of such assessment is Project Based Learning (PBL for now onwards), and it is not only a reflective praxis of alternative assessment but also is considered as a major learning tool for practical knowledge. It creates a scope for learners to learn from their peripheral surroundings by which they get influenced by in their everyday life, such as their social, political, communal, and familial settings. Therefore, this paper explores the possibilities as well as challenges of implementing PBL as a learning and an assessment instrument in English language classrooms at the tertiary level education in Bangladesh.

Abstract

Research has shown that watching audio-visual materials can be beneficial for comprehension, motivation, and language acquisition in general. Subscription Video on Demand (SVOD) services, authentic, meaning focused foreign language audio-visual content has become more accessible in Japan. SVOD services offer various language options when accessing content. This study investigated the perceptions of usefulness of Japanese EFL learners considering three different language options, and enjoyment the students experienced watching a sitcom with the different language options. The participants completed questionnaires, watched three different episodes of a US sitcom, and randomly selected participants were asked to clarify their opinions in follow-up interviews. The results show that the participants consider captions to be the most useful language option, while the Japanese subtitles language option is the most enjoyable one, closely followed by the captions option. Finally, the study gives suggestions for language teachers what to do with these findings.

Abstract

Vocabulary study is one of the most emphasized English lessons among senior high school students since it is viewed as the fundamental key to exceling in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Along with Filipino, English is the official language of the Philippines. As a result, it is considered the Filipinos' second language and is the medium of instruction in the majority of school topics. While all teachers appear to be preoccupied with understanding their students' English vocabulary performance, particularly in subjects like English for Academic and Professional Purposes, Reading and Writing, and Oral Communication, a better understanding of their students' vocabulary learning strategies and attitudes toward learning vocabulary should be given much more attention. As a result, the goal of this study is to provide useful references for future research on Filipino senior high school students' vocabulary learning practices and attitudes toward vocabulary acquisition. This researcher will also recommend some more relevant and important research that should be conducted in order to gain a better grasp of the subject of study.

Abstract

This article compares and contrasts the Language Curriculum in the United States, United Arab Emirates, Mongolia, Philippines and Indian Language Curriculum for the year 2022. This is a comparative analysis; a research journal conducted to analyze the ideological, cultural, and political-economic elements that impact the development of language curricula in five different countries. Furthermore, the educational goals and ideologies that underpin both curricula are discussed. A very intriguing conclusion emerges when considering the curricula's unspoken aims. All the five (5) nations' language and literature curricula emphasize the significance of citizenship and character education and are interwoven into curricula instruction. Meanwhile, the US language curriculum prioritizes creating American identity, with a focus on improving learning for the professional workforce and career-ready persons, which will help the global economy in the future. Meanwhile, moral and religious training is prioritized in the United Arab Emirates, Mongolia, Philippines and Indian language curriculum. Language education or curriculum are intertwined in nation-building. After examining, comparing, and contrasting both curricula, the author discovered that the US successfully instills character education to mold the worldview and characteristics of its population derived from their clear ideology, whereas the United Arab Emirates, Mongolia, Philippines and India are rather unexplained and ambiguous. As a result, this article demonstrates that there is an opportunity for development for educators and educational leaders in the United Arab Emirates, Mongolia, Philippines and India to be more explicit in determining which character is best exposed in the language curriculum.
