Abstract

Teaching English as foreign language is the term, which is used by teacher where English is not used in the learners’ daily life. The English is only used in some places, which English as the official or instruction language, in the office and school for instance. Therefore, in teaching this language, teacher needs some strategies and methodologies, to rise up either students’ motivation or willingness, so that the goal of learning can be achieved. Accordingly, the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia has released a new curriculum along with its approach, three methodologies and five strategies, which those must be applied in every teaching and learning process. On the other hand, there are many strategies in language teaching offered by the experts, which can be mixed by teacher in one meeting, like summarizing and note taking, create, and memory strategies for instance. Besides, the three methodologies, which are Project-Based, Problem-Based, and Discovery learning, are hard to choose by English teacher, which is caused by the traditional teaching habit of teacher and their lack of knowledge about those three methodologies before. Therefore, this article discusses about to propose the appropriate of methodologies and strategies used under the Scientific Approach, so that teachers are able to know which method that is appropriate for their class activity.

In English teaching, a communicative textbook is important in order to help students develop their communicative competence since the goal of learning a language is to be able to use the language learned communicatively. This article will present the criteria of the communicative textbook based on Cunningsworth (1995). Abstract

This paper is aimed to improve writing skill of senior high schools students by using picture series technique. To achieve the objective, this paper focuses on 3 (three) previous studies about teaching writing using picture series. Those studies are taken from some English thesis and journal about picture series. After compiling and understanding all the findings of those research, the conclusion is given based the usage of picture series in several written form and also the effectiveness of techniques by using pictures series during the process of students writing activities. The discussion told that the improving of students writing skills using picture series, mostly the previous researcher uses pre-test and post-test as data collection. The result of post-test writing is always higher or better than pre-test after using picture series technique. Most of previous researchers use quantitative research method because the result of the research can be measured accurately. The application of picture series can be improved in the written form of narrative text, descriptive text, and recount text. The usage of picture series is expected to improve the students’ writing ability as it can help them with the new ideas and vocabularies. Implementing picture series is also effective to improve the students’ motivation in the writing process. The common writing problems in the aspects of content, vocabulary, language use and organization also can be reduced by implementing picture series in the teaching and learning process of writing

Abstract

One of the most important skills in EFL is speaking skill. It employs the best influence when seeing goal of speaking learning process. This matter has become essential for teacher as the facilitator and director of the language teaching and learning to formulate certain strategy in improving learner’ motivation to achieve their goal orientation. This article investigated the motivational strategy in teaching speaking Class achievement to achieve students’ goal orientation. Goal orientation has emerged as an important motivational construct in organizational research providing an explanation for that individuals use to engage in achievement activities. The lack of confidence on the students might appear as one of factors that lead the learners into their less mastery on speaking. The use of motivational strategies on speaking class to promote student’s achievement on goal orientation on speaking can be inferred by encouraging mastery oriented learning and promoting performance oriented learning. Those two motivational strategy in speaking will drive the students on their goal orientation in which this is divided into mastery and performance oriented learning that drive learner into their motivated mind which leads them into their reachable goal.

Abstract

Group Development is a term used to indicate the patterns in the way groups of people change over time and make decisions. The study of group developments can be useful in speaking classroom especially in observing adult learners’ behaviors. Furthermore, it is also beneficial in understanding the process of decision making in group behavior especially in regarding speaking ability as one of the measurements in knowing someone’s language proficiency. People tend to consider speaking as the most important skill that they can acquire and they can assess their progress in communication. This article discusses on how group development create interaction and behavior decision in speaking classroom for adult learners.

Abstract

Ethno-pedagogy is one of worth developed education concept. Students will get advantageous learning through elaboration of cultural values. Learning foreign language and target culture will significantly affect students’ behavior if not accompanied with fostering students’ awareness and affectionate of conserving local wisdom. For this reason, ESP class has wider chance to guide students to the right path of learning for they are willing to study in unity with their needs and interest. It is teachers’ obligation afterward to provide suitable materials and energetic classroom activities so learning will be meaningful and beneficial.

Abstract

Writing is an essential tool for communication. Good writing allows people to communicate clearly. Among the four basic skills, writing is the most complicated one. Writing has several types and one of them is narrative. The purposes of narrative are to tell story and share information whether it is a book, thesis, journal, and an article. Unfortunately, some students do not like to write. They think that writing is so complicated and they always feel that English is horrible. Such negative attitudes are problematic in ESL/EFL writing classroom. The arising of media techonology like Storybird as internet-based CALL and an interactive storytelling website helps to boost student engagement and the students’ ability in narrative writing will increase. Meanwhile, by using Storybird, the students can study narrative writing at anywhere and anytime as long as each student has an internet connection and a laptop or netbook. The students can use it by themselves because there is a simple guide for them available in Storybird. Through Storybird, they can be autonomous learners and it is related to the Principle of Eclecticism. The aims of this article are to give a brief description about the importance and the guidelines of using Storybird in teaching and learning narrative writing. Storybird will promote literacy, enthusiasm, imagination, creativity and collaboration in learning narrative writing
