A nonlinear polarization rotation technique-based mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser has been experimentally demonstrated using a 0.75 m long highly concentrated erbium-doped fiber as the gain medium. With unintentional polarization dependent loss induced by twisting single-mode fiber in an intracavity polarization controller, the optical output of the laser shifts from continuous wavelength to modelocked soliton pulse. A stable and cleaner pulse with a repetition rate of 15.32 MHz laser wavelengths and a pulse energy of 0.496 nJ with optical signal-to noise ratio of more than 33 dB are successfully obtained using a simple ring cavity.

The video streaming is one of the important application which consumes more bandwidth compared to non-real-time traffic. Most of the existing video transmissions are either using UDP or RTP over UDP. Since these protocols are not designed with congestion control, they affect the performance of peer video transmissions and the non-real-time applications. Like TFRC, Real-Time Media Congestion Avoidance (RMCAT) is one of the recently proposed frameworks to provide congestion control for real-time applications. Since the need for video transmission is increasing over the wireless LAN, in this paper the performance of the protocol was studied over WLAN with different network conditions. From the detailed study, we observed that RMCAT considers the packet losses due to the distance and channel conditions as congestion loss, and hence it reduced the sending rate thereby it affected the video transmission.

In the last two decades there has been significant leap on the spatial resolution of the satellite digital images which may be very useful for estimating stand parameter required for forest as well as environment management. This paper describes development of stand volume estimator models using SPOT 6 panchromatic and multispectral images with an object-based digital image analysis (OBIA) and conventional pixel-based approaches. The data used include panchromatic band with1.5m spatial resolution, and multispectral band with6m spatial resolution. The proposed OBIA technique with mean-shift algorithm was functioned to derive a canopy cover variable from the fusion of the panchromatic and multispectral, while the pixel-based vegetation index was used to develop model with an original pixel-size of 6 m. The estimator models were established based on 65 sample plots both measured in the field and images. The study found that the OBIA provides more accurate identification with Kappa Accuracy (KA) of 71% and Overall Accuracy (OA) of 86%. The study concluded that the best stand volume estimation model is the model that developed from the canopy cover (C) derived from OBIA i.e., v = 13.47e0.032C with mean deviation of only 0.92%, better than the model derived from conventional pixel-based approach, i.e., v = 0.0000067e16.48TNDVI with a mean deviation of 5.37%.

Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a promising packet switching technology in the field of communication network, allowing router to forward the packets based on labels. However, off-the-shelves routers are made to be non-configurable, making it less suitable for academic research purposes. The aim of this paper is to explore the possibility of developing a configurable MPLS router by reviewing embedded system-based router, software-based router and commercial MPLS router itself. The architecture of the routers will be described in detail and their performances will be compared. From the analysis, we found that the development of reconfigurable MPLS router testbed is achievable by using embedded system-based hardware due to its freedom of reconfigurability.

In this present era, people live a very busy life. People in cities have irregular and long working times. In such a situation a person will always find ways of saving time. Household chores are the ones that are most dreaded upon and cleaning a home tops the list. An autonomous floor cleaning robot is developed to help people to complete their cleaning task. This paper presents the development of an autonomous floor cleaning robot by using Arduino as a platform for processing and controlling the input and output. Autonomous vacuum cleaner robot is designed to make cleaning process become easier compared to using manual vacuum. The idea is basically by having the sensor to detect any object and send the input to Arduino that will control the robot movement. This robot can perform vacuum and wiping task with water spray function. It is also programmed to move in zigzag movement to ensure that the robot can clean all the corner of the house and avoid obstacle autonomously. This robot consists of three ultrasonic sensors, one infra-red (IR) sensor and two brushes in front of it to ensure effective cleaning. It is designed to run on flat surface. This autonomous multi-function floor cleaning robot has lower cost compared to existing vacuum robot on the shelves and is suitable for home and small premise usage.

The major enemy of wireless communication is multipath fading that highly degrades the received signal. Spatial diversity highly reduces deep fades of the wireless communication. Higher signal to noise ratio (SNR) requirement can be reduced by using space time coding. In this paper, the error performance of un-coded MIMO, different diversity combing methods, space time block codes and space time trellis codes are analyzed using different parameters including number of antennas, M-array modulations, trace criteria, rank and determinant. The simulation results have shown that the Bit Error Rate (BER) significantly reduces with increasing number of receiver antennas. However, the number of antennas that a mobile device can have is limited by its size and this is inconvenient for mobile communication. Hence, this paper suggests space time codes to mitigate multipath problems in mobile communication. So, BER performance of space time block codes scheme was evaluated by varying the number of transmitter and receiver antennas along with varying M-array PSK modulation orders. The results have shown that better BER is possible by integrating space time codes with spatial diversity. Finally, the error performance of space time trellis codes was evaluated by using trace, rank and determinant, and the simulation results depicted that better error performance is achieved using the proposed multipath reduction method.

The fingerprinting localization technique is the most commonly used localization technique of the indoor positioning system. It is used by several technologies for short and long range position estimation like wireless fidelity and radio frequency. There are several schemes used to estimate a location for the indoor environment but the drawbacks resulted in complexity issues. These drawbacks have negative effects on location estimation. In order to address these drawbacks, this work attempted to explore the fingerprinting localization technique for location estimation of the indoor environment that focuses on position estimation. Results showed that the simplicity of the design of position estimation without compromising the functionality of the operations was observed with 100% accuracy on position estimation.

This paper presents the hardware design of a 2-dimensional Hadamard transform used the in the rate distortion optimization module in state-of-the-art HEVC video encoder. The transform is mainly used to quickly determine optimum block size for encoding part of a video frame. The proposed design is both scalable and fast by 1) implementing a unified architecture for sizes 4x4 to 32x32, and 2) pipelining and feed through control that allows high performance for all block sizes. The design starts with high-level algorithmic loop unrolling optimization to determine suitable level of parallelism. Based on this, a suitable hardware architecture is devised using transpose memory buffer as pipeline memory for maximum performance. The design is synthesized and implemented on Xilinx Kintex Ultrascale FPGA. Results indicate variable performance obtained for different block sizes and higher operating frequency compared to a similar work in literature. The proposed design can be used as a hardware accelerator to speed up the rate distortion optimization operation in HEVC video encoders.

This paper evaluates the recognition performance of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Bag of Features (BoF) for multiple font digit recognition. Font digit recognition is part of character recognition that is used to translate images from many document-input tasks such as handwritten, typewritten and printed text. BoF is a popular machine learning method while CNN is a popular deep learning method. Experiments were performed by applying BoF with Speeded-up Robust Feature (SURF) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier and compared with CNN on Chars74K dataset. The recognition accuracy produced by BoF is just slightly lower than CNN where the accuracy of CNN is 0.96 while the accuracy of BoF is 0.94.
