Abstract

Nowadays, various image-based methods have been used in the area of monitoring. Whereas the precision of detection objects and real-time processing are the key issues for many applications. Considering the limitation of the working environment, the higher correctness and faster operating time can guarantee the work efficiency. In this paper, the image-based methods have been studied to monitoring the state of the flood in the real-time system. The performance of each image processing technique has been evaluated based on accuracy and processing time. In the flood monitoring system, the variation of important parameters can cause the change of performance and the effect of the variable parameters has been demonstrated from the experiment results. After comparing to the other image-based techniques, canny edge detection presents the best one, which also has better repeatability with the source image from different locations. Consequently, the improved canny edge detection method has been proved that can work very well on the real hardware in the outdoor environment.

Abstract

In public and commercial buildings, the reduction of electricity consumption activities can be conducted through 3 paths, including improving the quality level of electric power, increasing the efficiency of electrical equipment, and reducing the waste of electric energy use. In this paper, the energy losses reduction potential on the distribution line of Engineering Faculty, Andalas University buildings through electric power quality improvement are analyzed. Power Quality (PQ) variables that considered in this analysis include power factor, unbalance current load and harmonics distortion. Analysis of correlation between PQ variables is required to determine the power loss on the distribution line of buildings. Using data of PQ variables recorded by Fluke Power Analyzer 435 series II, the energy losses of the distribution line without/with PQ improvement for each building is calculated. Analysis results have shown that the reduction potential is proportional to the value of PQ variables. Administrative faculty building with poor power quality has the potential to reduce its energy losses on the distribution line by 52.62% through power quality improvement. Civil engineering building group with quite good power quality only has the potential to reduce energy losses by 32.81%. Overall, the buildings in this faculty have the potential to reduce energy losses on distribution lines by 34.42% through its power quality improvement.

Abstract

Intrinsic values associated with ICT services activities in productive ageing. Given the advances made in ICT services that have been widely used, elderlies need to be equipped with the knowledge in using the services. The lack of ICT usage among elderlies is because of the low motivation to use the ICT applications. This in turn could be due to the lack of intrinsic values associated with the use of ICT applications among elderlies. This study explores further the features of ICT services needed to support intrinsic values activities. Brainstorming sessions is conducted in this study where it involved six ICT experts in order to identify ICT services features to support intrinsic value activities. Intrinsic motivation features are significant features in ICT services to support intrinsic value activities for productive ageing. There are five intrinsic motivation features identified in this research, which are autonomy, competence, relatedness, altruism and curiosity. The ICT services to support intrinsic value activities model comprises of the ICT services characteristics that are transactive, community-based with online communication channels, and incorporated with intelligent agents.

Abstract

Impairment of cognitive and working memory after stroke was common. Vascular dementia (VaD) was a prevalent type of dementia that was caused by an impaired blood supply to the brain because of a series of small strokes. Electroencephalogram (EEG) gives information about brain status and activity, so it had a lot of potential to be used in diagnosing people with dementia. Since the EEG signal is extremely non-linear and non-stationary data, traditional Fourier analysis such as Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) that broadens sinusoidal signals cannot describe the amplitude contribution of each frequency value in specific time. Meanwhile, Hilbert Huang Transform (HHT) was based on the characteristic local time scale of the signal, it can efficiently obtain instantaneous frequency and instantaneous amplitude for nonstationary and nonlinear data. In this paper, HHT was employed as feature extraction method to extract the energy features of frequency bands from post stroke patients and healthy subjects. The extracted features were fed into extreme learning machine (ELM) for classifying post stroke patient with VaD and healthy subjects. The results of classification accuracy using HHT as feature extractor and FFT as feature extractor were compared. The mean accuracy of classification using HHT was 59.14%, respectively, while mean accuracy of classification using FFT was 94.4%, respectively, in classifying post stroke patient with VaD and healthy subjects.

Abstract

This paper examines the physico-mechanical properties of untreated kenaf based insulation paper with consideration on different beating degrees. Kenaf bast fibers were first processed through soda pulping process. Different beating degrees were subjected to the processed pulps. Physical parameters of the paper were measured for each of the beating degrees. It is found that as the beating revolution increases, the kenaf based insulation paper’s density, tensile index and burst index increase while thickness and tear index decrease.

Abstract

Analysis of vertical light tubes, and diffuser as daylighting system in buildings is presented. The solar light energy is directly addressed to the chosen area of the building with a light tube and diffuser guiding structure. This work highlights illuminance obtained by light tubes in a three storied office building. Field investigation with a scaled prototype, and simulations with HOLIGILM, and DIALux are analyzed. It is observed that light tubes can offer large savings in electricity usage by using natural daylight.

Abstract

This study evaluate effectiveness of learning Linear Algebra using gamification strategy. In this study, gamification with storytelling strategy is used as teaching tools to attract student to learn Linear Algebra. This study using Polytechnic Malaysia syllabus with focus group of Diploma students for semester three (Mechanical Engineering) and semester four (Electrical Engineering) for two topics; Matrix and Numerical Method. They are five methods of calculation simultaneous linear equations which is ‘Inverse’, ‘Cramer's Rule’, ‘Gauss Elimination’, ‘Lower Upper Doolittle’ and ‘Lower Upper Crout’. They are three main phases to develop this gamification; Pedagogy Phase, Design Phase and Evaluation Phase. Mixed methods approach combining quantitative (survey) and qualitative (Electroencephalogram) is used to evaluate students learning process using Linear Algebra gamification application. The findings of the five items surveyed showed that the acceptance of the prototype of the Linear Algebra Gamification Application was very encouraging from a total of 104 students. This is because all 38 questions for the five items earn a median of four and this indicates the majority of students choose “Agree” and “Strongly Agree”. The findings also show the percent “Agree” and “Strongly Agree” for all questions having a high percentage of between 61.5 and 94.2. This shows more than half satisfied and likes to use the Linear Algebra Gamification Application prototype. With the development of the Linear Algebra Gamification Application prototype, it is hoped that the use of learning based can be extended to a variety of subjects as well as topics to make the learning process more interesting and fun as well as helping to motivate students to learn

Abstract

The advancement of Distributed Generation (DG) technologies have caused great impact to power system operation. Inappropriate installation of DGs may lead to over-compensation or under-compensation situation. Thus, a reliable optimization is urgent to avoid any unwanted effect. This paper analyses the installation impact of different types-multi-DGs determined using a pre-developed hybrid optimization technique termed as Immunized-Brainstorm-Evolutionary Programming (IBSEP). It is imperative to study the effect of multi-DGs installation such that a relevant utility can make a correct decision, whether its installation is worth or vice versa. Rigorous study has been conducted in terms of identifying the optimal location and sizing, installed on transmission system for voltage control involving different DG types. Comprehensive results are embedded in this paper to demonstrate the effect of multi-DGs installation in transmission system which in turns beneficial to the utility.

Abstract

For a portable backup power system, there is an essential need to contribute to increasing the energy conversion efficiency between the source and the electrical household appliances to overcome the recent issues of global warming. This paper proposes a Backup power system (BPS) compatible with the capability to match with two primary power sources; Grid-Connected power as an AC and solar-PV as a DC power source. This system composes of a rechargeable battery bank of about 300V, while the voltage matching concept keeps maintaining the battery fully charged as long as the source power is available. Matlab-based simulation has performed to prove the concept of the adopted voltage-matching. A relay switch circuit controlled by the main power source is used to change-over the load/appliances between direct link through bypassing the main power and the storage battery power when both options of main power are unavailable. The result shows the excellent utilization of the traditional BPS losses, the proposed topology can achieve about 99% power efficiency as compared with the traditional one.

Abstract

This paper elaborates on the concepts of a new programming language “Dart”, which has been developed by Google and considered for future use. Here, we compare it to the most famous, real time, and updated language “Java”. This is to define similarities and differences between the two important languages, explain programs’ behavior, with a focus on investigating alternative implementation strategies and problem definitions. We used programming languages’ concepts and terminologies to compare between the main characteristics of the two languages, Dart & Java.
