Abstract

Be it in the power production or consumption end, improvement on the power efficiency has become one of the most pivoting research topics over the past few decades. In order to reduce the reliance on fossil fuels and negative impacts on the environment, many ways are found to show promising results to increase power efficiency. One of the most effective ways is to recover and reuse heat waste. In this research, a heat waste recovery system is proposed by using thermoelectric generators (TEGs). This proposed heat recovery system can be implemented at the exhaust or the chiller section of a power system to abstract the excessive and unwanted heat and reuse it before it dissipates into the environment or goes to waste. Experiments are setup and conducted with controlled heat levels to investigate the performance of the proposed system in converting heat waste into electricity under different temperatures. The results show that the generated power hikes as the heat set-points increase from 30°C to 240°C. The output power fluctuates and shows no significant increase as the temperature increases from 240°C onwards. The maximum power is generated at 290°C. It can thus be concluded that the proposed system successfully generates electricity under different level of heat waste temperature. In time to come, this research can further explore the possibility on the optimization of the generated power.

Abstract

In Wireless Power Transmission (WPT) systems, the proportion of energy received by the load is critical and the efficiency is the more significant parameter. The magnetic multiple input algorithms as well as many multiple overlapping coils structures in the transmitter side are proposed for the coal mine Internet of the Things (IOT) nodes. Different phase shifts cases for the input signal were considered to study their effect on the efficiency. Simulation results showed that the axial component of magnetic induction resulted from the multiple overlapping coils structure has preferable homogeneous distribution over the traditional single input coil. The proposed system achieved an efficiency value of 60 % for a receiver placed 40 cm away from a 4 coils transmitter comparing to an efficiency value of 50% for the same distance using a single coil transmitter. Simulation results shows that the proposed model is well adapted for the movable charging mode for the IOT nodes in coal mine. DOI : http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v12i6.5439

Abstract

This paper presents medium access control (MAC) protocol designed for embedded sensor networks. I start with a protocol called MACAW, RTS-CTS-DS-DATA data packet exchange. Then I analyze the properties of some MAC protocols, including S-MAC, B-MAC and IEEE 802.15.4. According to the understanding of S-MAC, some advantages are summarized, such as energy saving, latency reduction, etc. however, there are still some disadvantages, including data packet lost, unfairness, synchronization. And then the similarities and differences between them are discussed. S-MAC is a novel technique to reduce energy consumption, but B-MAC is more efficient with long preamble. Using long preamble, B-MAC achieves collision avoidance and high channel utilization rate. B-MAC can minimize idle listening, but it needs bi-directional communication. Abstract

The millimeter wave (mmWave) band and its usage has taken an attention in this 5G creation as its implementation can provide ultra-high speed data transmission in wireless network. This is much better than the centimeter wave-band as it has limitations on the bandwidth usage. While considering the 5G networking with the backhaul-topologies, the network and user-equipment performance depends on the selection of serving receiving nodes (RNs) of the user-equipment (UE). Therefore, the algorithms that reduces the complexity of the UE association and the backhaul traffic-routing must be chosen, which thereby maximizes the efficiency of the spectrum and energy of network. The modifications are done to the Multicellular local solution (McLS)approach, which leads to our proposed algorithm that is, improved against the channel information estimation-errors. The optimized multi-cell approach (OMcA) is formed by combining the improved-parameter, the pre-coder, mean square error (MSE) weighted-variable and receive filter. The proposed OMcA is compared with some other existing technique in order to evaluate the performance in terms of sum rate (SR).

Abstract

Mathematics is one of the basic and core subject for engineering students. Learning mathematics helps in developing problem solving skills as the subject requires critical thinking. However, many students perceive mathematics as a difficult subject and eventually get poor result for the subject. In the institution under study, there were increases in failure rate for the subject for the past few semesters. Based on a preliminary study, it was found that 55 percent of engineering student claimed that they encountered difficulties in visualizing functions in 3-dimensional space, which is the main content for engineering calculus subject. This fact is very unsatisfactory as engineering students are expected to possess strong mathematical problem solving skills. In light of this, the objective of this research is to develop an interactive teaching and learning tools, so as to assist students in visualizing 3-dimensional space functions. The tool is intended to be used in teaching and learning process in classrooms and it is expected that the students’ understanding in the subject could be improved.

Abstract

Analysis on the retina blood vessels from fundus images have been widely used in the medical community to detect the disorder condition in the blood vessels. An automated tracing of retina blood vessel can help to provide valuable computer-assisted diagnosis for the ophthalmic disorders. Thus, it helps to reduce the time for the ophthalmologist to analyses and diagnose the result of the fundus image of patient. The purpose of this research is to build an algorithm to trace the retina blood vessels. The method to be used in this research consist of two parts which are the pre-processing part and the feature extraction by using the Kirsch’s template. Combining the pre-processing at the early stage and feature extraction at the next stage is applied to extract the edges of the blood vessels.  The proposed algorithm was verified by using two online databases, DRIVE and HRF to validate the performance measures. Hence, proposed method is capable to extract the retina blood vessel and give the accuracy of 0.7917, the sensitivity of 0.9077 and the specificity of 0.7215. In conclusion, the extraction of the blood vessels is highly recommended as the early screening stage for the eye diseases beneficially.

Abstract

This paper proposes a lonely island detection method based on automatic type phase displacement. Different form the traditional island detection methods, this method solve the problem of its some kind of detection under the condition of failure , improving active island detection technology of slip type automatic frequency quadratic displacement method. Abstract

The telecare medical information system (TMIS) could improve quality of medical care since it allows patients to enjoy health-care delivery services in their home. However, the privacy and security influence the development of the TMIS since it is employed in open networks. Recently, Wu and Xu proposed a privacy authentication scheme for the TMIS and claimed that their scheme could overcome weaknesses in previous schemes. However, we will demonstrate that their scheme is venerable to the server spoofing attack and cannot provide user anonymity. To overcome weaknesses in their scheme, we also propose a new authentication scheme for the TMIS. Analysis shows that our scheme not only overcome weaknesses in Wu et al.’s scheme, but also has better performance.

Abstract

Control system design for inverter fed drives previously used the classical transfer function approach for single-input singleoutput (SISO) systems. Proportional plus Integral (PI) controllers were designed for individual control loops.It is found that the transient response of a PI controller is slow and is improved by pole placement through state feedback. However, the effective gains of the PI controller are substantially decreased as a function of the increase of motor speed. A control system is generally characterized by the hierarchy of the control loops, where the outer loop controls the inner loops. The inner loops are designed to execute progressively faster. The speed controller (PI controller) processes the speed error and generates the reference torque. In the inner loop, firstly a non-linear controller is designed for the system by which the system nonlinearity is canceled using state or exact feedback linearization. In addition, a linear state feedback control law based on pole placement technique including the integral of output error (IOE) is used in order to achieve zero steady state error with respect to reference current specification, while at the same time improving the dynamic response.The proposed scheme has been validated through extensive simulation using MATLAB.

Abstract

Combining with the present situation of risk management in domestic coal enterprises,the overall flow of risk pre-control system of coal enterprise is designed on the basis of the ISO/FDIS31000 “Risk management—Principles and guidelines” released by the International Standards Organization and risk precontrol management system of safety in coal mine, UML(unified modeling language) is used as a tool to establish the model of system requirements analysis, risk management subsystem is taken as an example to elaborate the modeling process of system analysis, the merit of ensuring the accuracy and consistency of system analysis when using UML as the tool of object-oriented system requirements analysis is verified. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v11i7.2853
