Abstract

Production Function Analysis of Coconut Farming System and Coconut Farmers Respose in Indragiri Hilir DistrictThe research is conducted in sub-district Tempuling, Indragiri Hilir, Riau Province for two years February 2004 - February 2006). Technical aspect, economy and social data are taken from 120 coconut base farming community based organization program participant. Farming system analysis is conducted using sutvey method by preparing question-list for the farmers that are participating in Community Base Orga-nization (CBO). The objectives of this research and the interview to 20 farmer respondent are done using random sampling from 120 farmer that are participating in CBO. The objectives of this research are to analyse the functional form ofcoconut farming production and find out farmers response on coconut farming in community base organi-zation. Methodology of this research are production function translog and response analysis. Parameters that being observed are the amount of production, seeds, vertilizer and labor. Typically for response analysis the parameters being observed are income, wide farm, education and participation in CBO group. The result of production function analysis with three input factors (seed, vertilizer and labor) showed that farmer position as aproducer is at increasing return to scale condition which mean that the use of seeds, vertilizers and labors still can be increase to reach maximum profitability. By that result it is still possible to add more input factor. Average elasticity coefficient number for seed is 0.5323, vertilizer input 0.0148 and labor input 4.377. The best elasticity coefficient number is from labor input which indicate for every labor addition will increased production level equal to 0.83 percent. For farmer level of respon to CBO base farming program are affected by level of income and available labors. The higher income and labors level will make the farmer more active in participating CBO based= coconut farming program which will automatically increase the coconut crop production and quality.

Abstract

Genetic Diversity of Mapanget Tall (DMT) and Tenga Tall (DTA) Coconuts based on Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD)The objective of this research were to determine genetic diversity within and inter population of Mapanget Tall (DMT) and Tenga Tall (DTA) coconuts, and their genetic relationship based on RAPD ( ). Research was done at Plant Biology Laboratory of Center Research of Genetic Resources and Biotechnology, Institut Pertanian Bogor, from February to May 2007. The result showed that ten RAPD 10-primer used could separate DMT and DTA in each group. Genetic diversity within population was relatively narrow, so that selection in order to improve character in each population must be done selectively. Genetic relationship between DMT dan DTA populations was high (52%), so that crossing between these population will give highest heterosis effect.

Abstract

Performance of Non-Spiny Sago Callus on Modified MS MediaThe research was conducted in Tissue Culture Laboratory of Indonesian Coconut and Other Palmae Institute, North Sulawesi, in 2008. The aim of the research was to know the growth of callus on modified MS medium. The result indicated that embryogenic callus were formed in 5 to 6 months after subculturing in the media with concentration of 24-D 100 mg/ , where as embryo somatic were formed in 3 to 5 months subculturing in the media with concentration of 2,4-D 50 mg/ . The concentration of 2,4-D is lower for embryo somatic formation than embryogenic callus formation. This result showed that the explant of sago can growth in modificated MS medium.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine inbreeding depression based on morphological markers in Mapanget Tall coconut line No.32. The result showed that inbreeding depression for vegetative characters in S2 generation was expressed only in girth of stem 100 cm from soil (3.28%) and width of leaflet (1.17%). Inbreding depression in S3 generation expressed in girth of stem 20 cm and 100 cm from soil (13.01% and 8.03%), height of 11 leafscars (11.80%), and number of leaflet (6.15%). In S4 generation , inbreeding depression expressed in girth of stem 20 cm and 100 cm from soil (5.39% & 14.41%), height of 11 leafscars (17.40%), width of leaflet (4.87%), and number of leaves (13.62%). Inbreeding depression also expressed in characters number of inflorescence per palm per year (7.41%), length of inflorescence stalk (34.18%), number of female flowers (21.32%), and length of male flowers bunch (10.84). In S3 generation inbreeding depression expressed in characters number of inflorescence per palm per year (14.90%), number of fruit per inflorescence (11.51%), length of inflorescence stalk (38.17%), number of female flowers (47.91%), and length of male flowers bunch (5.31%), but not expressed in width of inflorescence stalk (-11.07%) and thick of inflorescence stalk (-8.73%). Inbreeding depression expressed in S4 for all generatif characters ranged from 29.09% to 85.92%. In fruit components, inbreeding depression in S2 expressed in total fruit (9.01%), coconut water (16.07%), coconut shell (8.41%), and endosperm (7.55%) except on coconut fiber (-1.03%). In S3, inbreeding depression expressed in total fruit (5.20%), coconut fiber (0.58%), and endosperm (6.37%), except on coconut shell (-2.05%) and coconut water (-4.50%). In S4, inbreeding depression expressed in all characters of fruit component, total fruit (47.68%), coconut fiber (45.86%), coconut water (4.00%), coconut shell (51.82%), and endosperm (54.04%). Due to inbreeding depression, morphological performance of S4 generation nearly the same to that of Dwarf coconut.

Abstract

Social Economic and Culture Factors that Influence Coconut Farm in Talaud Island RegencyThis research was done in order to study social economic and culture factors that influence farmer income at coconut farm in Talaud Island Regency. This research was conducted by survey method with descriptif analytis approach in Kabaruan and Beo Sub District, Talaud Island from August to October 2005. A total of four villages were chosen randomly, two villages in each Sub District. In each village, 30 farmers were chosen randomly as respondents, maturing total 120 farmers. The result of multiple regression analysis showed that factors influenced at the coconut farm in Talaud Island Regency were culture value variable, extension approach variable, distance of farmer house to coconut farm variable, characteristic of technologi variable, and farmer motivation variable. Dominant factor which determines coconut farmer’s rate of return is the farmer motivation.

Abstract

Variation of Oil and Medium Fatty Acid Chain of Local Coconut from Different ElevationThe research was conducted from March to December 2007 by using nine cultivars of local tall from farmers plantation in North Minahasa, South Minahasa and Bolaang Mongondow regions of North Sulawesi. The sample from each regions was taken out from three different elevation. Each cultivars was selected 15 palms and each palm was taken two mature nuts. VCO processing was done using stage heating and natural fermentation. Fatty acid content was analized at BBIA-Bogor and FTP – UGM laboratories. Beside of that, has been done oil content analyzes of kernel. The result showed that elevation did not influence to oil content and médium chain fatty acid (MCFA). MCFA of VCO from stage heating process almost the same with natural fermentation process.

Abstract

Effect of Fruit Maturity and Unhusked Treatment to Rate of Germination, Viability and Vigor of Arecanut SeedlingEffect of seed maturity and seed peeling to viability, germination rate and vigor of arecanut seedlings was assessed in May to July 2008 using arecanut ex situ collection of Kayuwatu Experimental Garden. Research was conducted in factorial experiment 3 x 2 x 4 by using randomized block design. Each treatment consists of four replications and each replication consists of 15 seeds. The results showed that seed maturity and seed peeling gives siqnificant effect on germination rate, viability, and seedlings vigor. Nine-month-old seeds without husks has the fastest germination rate (24.73 days) than other combination treatments. Eleven month old seeds without husks has the highest viability (90.00%). Twelve month old seeds either whole nut or without husk gave the highest seedling vigor.
