Abstract

This qualitative case study aims to analyze customer perceptions of Thanksinsomnia management's non-participatory crisis response strategy through closing communication access, and its impact on long-term trust and loyalty. The issue emerged due to the owner's moral crisis, which was responded to by terminating cooperation and closing the Instagram comment section. Data were gathered through documentation and in-depth interviews with young active consumers. The results show that disabling comment access was perceived negatively as a unilateral defensive action that cut off two-way communication. This policy triggered a boomerang effect, stimulating wild speculation and negative assumptions among consumers. Furthermore, an operational discrepancy was found where the brand shut down interaction on Instagram but remained aggressively active doing live sales on TikTok, creating an unethical double-standard impression. In conclusion, in the creative streetwear industry, ethical reputation and open communication are the primary foundations of loyalty. A slow, closed, and inconsistent crisis communication style is proven to erode trust and permanently destroy customer loyalty.

Abstract

The rapid expansion of digital financial technology has fundamentally transformed consumption patterns among adolescents in Indonesia. One of the fastest-growing financial innovations is the Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) service, which enables consumers to purchase goods instantly while postponing payment through installment schemes. Although BNPL contributes to financial inclusion, its accessibility has simultaneously increased adolescents’ vulnerability to impulsive buying, digital consumerism, and excessive debt. The widespread use of social media further intensifies this phenomenon through Fear of Missing Out (FOMO), encouraging young people to prioritize symbolic consumption over financial responsibility. This community engagement program aimed to improve digital financial literacy among vocational high school students by increasing their understanding of BNPL risks, strengthening critical awareness of digital consumerism, and promoting responsible financial decision-making. The program employed a Participatory Active Learning (PAL) approach involving interactive lectures, simulations, case discussions, digital media analysis, and reflective learning activities. Fifty-three students from SMKN 47 Jakarta participated in the program. Program evaluation adopted an Importance–Performance Analysis (IPA) framework using twelve service quality indicators measured through participant satisfaction questionnaires. The findings indicate that participants expressed a high level of overall satisfaction with the program, with an average importance score of 3.31 and a performance score of 3.29, producing a relatively small gap (-0.02). Indicators related to facilitator competence, teamwork, and overall participant satisfaction exceeded participants’ expectations, while learning facilities, contextual relevance of materials, and participant engagement remained areas requiring further improvement. These findings demonstrate that community-based financial literacy education represents an effective preventive communication strategy for improving adolescents’ awareness of digital financial risks. Furthermore, integrating communication literacy with behavioral financial education offers a promising approach for strengthening responsible digital citizenship among Generation Z. The study recommends that financial literacy initiatives should become an integral component of school-based digital education programs to support sustainable financial behavior among young people.
