Abstract

Teachers have an important role as educators and mentors for students and are entrusted with the responsibility to educate them. Therefore, teachers need to have effective strategies to convey knowledge and guidance so that the learning process can be more easily understood by students. In the context of Islamic Religious Education in schools, the material presented includes the Qur'an, creed, worship, jurisprudence, and Islamic culture. This material is expected to provide students with an understanding of religion that is beneficial for their lives. Therefore, in addition to providing knowledge, teachers are also responsible for guiding students to be able to practice the teachings contained in the material. This is in line with the main objective of religious learning, namely to ensure that students can apply it in their daily lives. The focus of this study is the strategies used by Islamic Religious Education teachers in shaping students' spiritual morals at the Private Elementary Madrasah (MIS) 'Aisyiyah in the North Sumatra region, including the results of the guidance provided and the educational factors that influence these strategies. Abstract

Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) has become an important tool in modern language education, offering many advantages and some challenges. CALL allows flexibility, learner autonomy, and wider access to communication with teachers and peers, while also providing authentic materials that help with language acquisition. CALL is especially useful in improving writing skills, as it includes tools for spelling and grammar correction. However, there are also disadvantages, such as its complexity for users, high costs, and the lack of face-to-face interaction, which can hinder the learning process. There are also issues like limited internet access, distractions, and ineffective learning in some online contexts. Despite these drawbacks, the use of CALL in language learning, particularly for writing, has become necessary due to technological progress and the shift to online learning caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This study explores the use of CALL in teaching academic writing, with a focus on writing abstracts. The participants are non-native speakers in their final year of an undergraduate civil engineering programme, aged between 21 and 23, with an elementary level of English proficiency. The aim is to improve students' understanding of academic writing, particularly the structure and content of abstracts, using CALL tools to aid the learning process. A text-oriented approach is applied, focusing on the simple present tense, paraphrasing techniques, and the use of CALL tools like Padlet and Quizizz. The learning process consists of pre-activities, classroom activities, and post-activities designed to develop students' writing skills. Although CALL provides flexibility and promotes learner autonomy, challenges such as limited vocabulary and reliance on machine translation were observed. To overcome these issues, guidance from instructors and active engagement in the learning process are crucial. Overall, CALL is a valuable tool in teaching writing, especially in digital learning environments.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze students' ability to visualize papers in PowerPoint. This is done so that students' obstacles in presenting educational PowerPoint can be found. The research method used is observation of 11 PowerPoint scripts that are student group assignments in the Scientific Paper Writing Course. The results obtained indicate that students' ability to visualize their papers in PowerPoint is divided into 7 categories of slide appearance and 12 errors in visualizing them. The research findings prove that there is a group that presents 127 slides or 52% in PowerPoint, even though that number has far exceeded the presentation of slides which should be around 10 to 12 slides. Meanwhile, the highest error of 22% is not presenting facts of phenomena as an important basis in the background. Thus, all of these findings can be used as evaluation material in the next learning process so that students can avoid mistakes and can present their paper visualizations in PowerPoint more educationally. In order to overcome this, it is necessary to prepare more mature, complete, and full independent practice materials so that the obstacles that arise can be resolved properly. The implications of this study can be a positive gap to improve the level of material with a more educational presentation. Thus, through a better understanding of the material, students will be able to visualize their papers into PowerPoint even better.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the practice of the merisik tradition within the Malay community of Bandar Sono Village, Batu Bara Regency, and how this tradition plays a role in shaping social boundaries for young people. The method used is a qualitative approach with data collected through in-depth interviews with traditional leaders, religious figures, the village head, couples who have experienced the merisik tradition, parents from both families, and members of the local community. The findings indicate that the merisik tradition is still actively practiced and not only serves as an initial stage before engagement, but also represents a form of respect toward the woman's family and an effort to preserve the honor of both parties. This tradition plays an important role in maintaining social order, particularly in regulating interactions between young men and women to align with cultural norms and Islamic teachings. It carries educational values such as responsibility, respect for parents, modesty, religious values, appreciation for tradition, and the regulation of interactions between males and females. Therefore, the merisik tradition remains relevant today as a form of character education rooted in local cultural values.
