Abstract

Productivity of dairy cows not only expresed by milk yield, but also the reproductive performance. General speaking that the milk yield depends on reproductive performance and vice versa. The present study was conducted to observe the milk yield and reproductive performance of Friesian Holstein (FH) dairy cows. This study was conducted using 150 sets of weekly recording of milk yield from 50 FH cows. Milk yield was calculated by using time interval method (TIM) which was equivalent to ME 305 days. The data were analysed using polynomial regression model. Results of the study indicated that the effect of days open on milk yield had significant effect on quadratic and qubic regression model. The average days open was 138.77 days. According to the quadratic regression model, increasing days open decreased milk yield and the minimum milk yield was observed at 169 days open.

Abstract

A rapid immunodiagnostic test that provides visual evidence of the presence of pork components in raw beef and chicken meats was developed. Colloidal gold was prepared and conjugated with anti-Swine IgG polyclonal antibody. Immunochromatographic test strips were produced, and then were used to test laboratory adulterated raw meat samples. The samples consisted of pork-in-beef, or pork-in-chicken at 1/0; 1/100; 1/1,000; 1/5,000; 1/10,000 (w/w) adulteration levels that were extracted in phosphate-buffered saline. Raw beef and chicken meats without pork were included as controls. Analysis was completed in 10 min. Detection limit was 1/5,000 (w/w), although 1/10,000 was also observed. This immunodiagnostic tests can be conveniently applied to detect low levels of pork components in raw beef and chicken meat products. For the commercial purposes, further studies need to be carried out.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether pegagan caused toxic effects on the liver. This study used completely randomized design with four treatments, ie 125, 200, 275 mg/kg BW and control, each treatment consisting of six replicates. Variables observed were the level of GPT, GOT and histological profile of liver. GPT and GOT levels were analyzed by analysis of single variant of 0.05. Histological picture of the liver include central venous dilation, inflammation, and damage to the structure of liver cells were performed by descriptive evaluation. Pegagan leaf extract did not show significant effect on GPT and GOT level in the liver of mice, whereas the histology results did not reveal any visible damage to liver cells in each dose. Administration of pegagan extract up to dose of 275 mg/kg BW was safe and would not cause damage to the liver cells.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of genetic and non-genetic factors on the growth traits including birth weight, weaning, and yearling weight of Bali cattle. Data were analyzed using generalized linear model (SAS) to observe non-genetic effect. To evaluate the genetic effect, the estimation of heritability were done using mixed models analysis with the dam and sire as random effect and sex, parity, year of birth, and season as fixed effect in the model besides the residual. The results showed that sex of calf had no significant influence on birth and weaning weight but had significant influence on yearling weight (P+0.07, 0.33+0.09, and 0.43+0.10 respectively. Heritability value of growth trait weaning and yearling weight in Bali cattle was quite moderate to high, so it was expected that selection in achieving increased gain on growth trait was effective.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate morphometric variation of Minahasa horses. Body measurements and live-weight were taken on 195 mare and 310 stallion of Minahasa horse. A multivariate approach was adopted to provide description of both body shape and body size of four Minahasa local horse populations, i.e. Tomohon, Manado, South Minahasa, and Minahasa. Statistical methods employed in this study were general linear model, simple discriminant analysis, and principle component analysis were used to construct phylogenic trees. The results showed that Tomohon’s horse population had higher body weights and body measurements (P<0.05) than those from three other areas (Manado, South Minahasa, and Minahasa). The hip width is the most discriminant variable to determine the differences among Minahasa local horse population. The results support establishment of strategy to promote the use and the development of local adapted horse.

Abstract

Milk samples were investigated for counts and prevalence of indicator bacteria, which were TPC, coliforms, coagulase positive Staphylococci (CPS), and coagulase negative Staphylococci (CNS). Ten potential risk factors were also evaluated in relation to the prevalence of indicator bacteria. The results showed that the median values of indicator bacterial counts from overall udder-half milk samples were 3.74, 0.70, 1.70, and 2.52 log cfu/ml and from bulk milk samples were 5.69, 2.98, 3.66 and 3.32 log cfu/ml for TPC, coliforms, CPS, and CNS, respectively. None of the median values of overall udder-half milk samples exceeded the maximum limit of the standards for all indicator bacteria. However, in the bulk milk samples only the median value of TPC below the maximum limit of the standards. Overall prevalence of coliforms, CPS and CNS from udder-half milk samples were 46.3%, 37.7%, and 66.0%, respectively, and from bulk milk samples were 86.7%, 76.7%, and 86.7%, respectively. Saanen crossbreed, fifth parity and udders with inflammation were found to be risk factors. This study results indicated that the hygienic practices in the dairy goat farms are still need to be increased.  To increase the hygienic level of the milk, the identified significant risk factors must be controlled.

Abstract

In the present study examined the influence of red fruit extract (RFE) on fertilization rate and development of mice embryos during the pre-implantation stage. The application of RFE dose 0 ml/head/day, 0.05 ml/head/day, and 0.1 ml/head/day for seven days were conducted to examine its influence at the level of fertilization, then the application of RFE was continued during 0-3 days stage of pregnancy (0 day of pregnancy is the formation of the vaginal plug). The super-ovulation of the white mice was done by injecting of 5 IU PMSG and hCG (48 hours after PMSG), folowed by mating the females with males with ratio 1:1. The single-cell-embryos were collected 20 hours after the injection of hCG. The eggs were then fixed and stained before examinating the normal fertilization of eggs (formation 2 pronucleus). The morula and blastocysts were collected 84 hours after injection of hCG. The influence of the RFE with dose 0.1 ml on normal fertilization rate (formation 2 PN), significantly higher (46.01%) compared with dose 0.05 ml (37.51%) and controlled (16.38%). However, the influence of RFE with dose of 0.05 ml and 0.1 ml on the growth of pre-implantation stage embryos may inhibit the growth of mice embryos during the pre-implantation stage in vivo.

Abstract

Jatropha curcas meal (JCM) contains high crude protein (58%-60%), but it can not be used properly because of anti-nutritional contents known as curcin and phorbolesther. These components interferes protein metabolism and body protein synthesis. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of feeding fermented JCM using Rhizopus oligosporus on broilers' performances. Ninety six of day old chicks  of Ross strain broiler (initial body weight 45.6±1.7 g) were used and reared for five weeks. The treatments were: R0 (diet without JCM), R1 (diet contained 3% fermented JCM), R2 (diet contained 6% fermented JCM) and R3 (diet contained 9% fermented JCM). A completely randomize design with 4 treatments and 4 replications was assigned in this experiment. The data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results indicated that feeding fermented JCM at the level of 3% to 9% in starter and grower-finisher broilers highly significant reduced (PR. oligosporus indicated no effective detoxification process in relation to the improvement of broiler performances.

Abstract

Bone meal is a natural source of calcium and phosphorus required for plant growth, but phosphorus can cause problems if they occur in high concentrations particularly will inhibit growth of mycorrhizal fungi. The aim of this study was to find the best diameter size and dosage of bone meal for increasing growth of forage legume Pueraria phaseoloides and for producing arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) Glomus etunicatum inoculant. A glass house experiment was laid out in a randomized block design consisted of 13 treatments (control and 12 combination of different diameter size and weight of bone meal) and replicated three times. Bone meal and artificial fertilizer resulted the same effect (P>0.05) on dry matter of P. phaseoloides. Application of 25–40 mg with <250 µm diameter significantly (P<0.05) increased dry matter production. Bone meal reduced significantly (P<0.05) root colonization but increased significantly number of spores compared to that of artificial fertilizer. Reducing bone meal diameter significantly increased root colonization and number of spores of AMF G. etunicatum.

Abstract

A feeding trial has been conducted to compare feeding value of low and high protein dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS), and corn gluten meal (CGM) to brown layer in the tropics. Both types of DDGS was included at level 0%, 4%, 8%, 12%, and 16% in the diet while CGM was included at 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8% in similar content of metabolizable energy (ME) value (2650 kcal/kg) and protein (17%). Each dietary treatment was fed to 4 birds in individual wire cage and replicated 5 times. The trial was performed for 10 weeks and egg production, egg weight, feed intake was measured. At the end of feeding period, manure was collected and analyzed for moisture content while samples of eggs were measured for yolk color and the yolk was analyzed for xanthophyll level. Result showed that feeding Lopro DDGS, Hipro DDGS, and CGM did not affect egg production (egg mass, egg number, and egg weight), however, feeding DDGS resulted in less feed intake (111 g/day) compared to  feeding CGM (114 g/day). Feeding DDGS up to 16% did not affect egg production and similar to feeding CGM up to 8%. Feeding high level of DDGS or CGM did not significantly affect the moisture content of excreta which were between 78.1%-81.9%. Increasing levels of DDGS or CGM increased yolk color score related to the higher level of xanthophylls content in egg yolk. The coloring ability of CGM to egg yolk was higher than that of DDGS. In conclusion, DDGS can be fed to layer up to 16% without affecting egg production while CGM can be fed up to 8% in the diet. DDGS can be used as source of yellow pigment for egg yolk as also found in CGM.
