Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of land use change on flood discharge in Batam City for the period 2014–2023 by integrating spatial analysis based on Geographic Information System (GIS) and hydrological analysis using the Rational Method. The data used included Landsat satellite images from 2014 and 2023, annual maximum rainfall data for 10 years, and data on the area of the river basin. Land use changes were analyzed through supervised classification and their contribution to changes in the runoff coefficient was calculated based on the area of each land class. The results of the study show a 10.86% reduction in forest area and a 4.50% increase in built-up land. These changes have resulted in an increase in the average runoff coefficient of the watershed, which in turn has increased the maximum planned flood discharge. The calculation results show an increase in average flood discharge of 11.89% or around 50.47 m³/second from 2014 to 2023. This study confirms that land use changes due to urbanization contribute significantly to an increased risk of flooding in Batam City, thus requiring sustainable spatial management.

Abstract

Infrastructure projects frequently face challenges such as cost overruns and schedule delays, which are generally caused by suboptimal risk management practices. This condition highlights the importance of early and integrated planning, sustainable stakeholder collaboration, and evidence-based decision-making. Accordingly, this study aims to identify and analyze the key risk factors that influence the optimization of risk management strategies in infrastructure projects. This study employs a quantitative approach, with data collected through an online questionnaire distributed to 31 infrastructure professionals in Batam City, Indonesia. The respondents consist of project managers, engineers, consultants, and contractors selected using purposive sampling to ensure the relevance of practical experience. Although the sample size is limited, it is considered adequate for an exploratory study focused on the local context. The results indicate that internal risks, particularly inadequate planning and ineffective work management, have a more dominant impact than external risks such as climatic conditions. Other significant factors include financial instability, design changes, and client-driven variations. Statistical analysis using SPSS reveals a significant positive correlation between proactive stakeholder involvement and the effectiveness of risk response strategies. Furthermore, the use of historical data and formal risk documentation contributes to improved mitigation effectiveness. This study concludes that optimizing risk management in infrastructure projects requires an adaptive and evidence-based approach to enhance project resilience and minimize delays and cost overruns.

Abstract

Concrete compressive strength is a fundamental parameter for evaluating the performance of concrete structures. Although destructive testing using a Compression Testing Machine (CTM) is considered the most accurate method, its limited applicability to existing structures has led to the use of non-destructive methods, such as the rebound hammer test. However, rebound hammer results often deviate from CTM measurements, raising concerns regarding their reliability. This study examines the impact of rebound hammer test point location on the variability and accuracy of estimated concrete compressive strength, and assesses its agreement with destructive test results. A quantitative laboratory experimental program was conducted using concrete with a target strength of 15 MPa. Five cylindrical and five cubic specimens were tested at 28 days. Rebound hammer tests were performed on top, bottom, and side surfaces in accordance with ASTM C805, followed by destructive compressive strength testing using CTM based on ASTM C39. The results show that test point location systematically influences rebound hammer outcomes. Bottom test points produce the highest estimated strengths and the largest deviations from CTM results, whereas top test points yield the closest agreement with actual compressive strength. The findings confirm that rebound hammer accuracy is position-dependent and should be explicitly considered in concrete strength evaluation.

Abstract

The problems of flooding and waterlogging in urban areas have become a critical issue in urban infrastructure development, particularly in the city of Mataram and West Lombok Regency. Therefore, effective drainage system management is a key element in urban flood risk management. This study aims to assess the performance of urban drainage systems in residential areas and along highways based on Regulation of the Minister of Public Works and People’s Housing (Permen PUPR) No. 12/PRT/M/2014. The results show that the percentage of drainage channels that “failed” due to overtopping, overflow, or ponding (Qcapacity<Qdesign) was predominantly found in residential areas, with the highest percentage occurring in the primary drainage network. This indicates that the risk of flooding is higher in primary drainage networks because these networks handle a greater volume of wastewater compared to secondary and tertiary drainage networks. Based on administrative regions, the drainage performance of the drainage systems spread across West Lombok is worse than that of the city of Mataram. Based on the results of surveys and mapping of existing conditions at the study site, several problems were identified, including sedimentation, vegetation growth, and narrowing in several channel segments, which have the potential to reduce flow capacity and cause.

Abstract

The advancement of digital technology has significantly transformed urban transportation systems, particularly through the emergence of online transportation applications such as Gojek and Grab. These applications provide more flexible, faster, and easily accessible mobility alternatives for the public, including university students. This study aims to analyze the influence of online transportation application usage on the travel patterns of students at the Faculty of Engineering, Syiah Kuala University, particularly in terms of mode choice, travel frequency, travel time, and trip purpose. The research employs a quantitative approach using a questionnaire survey distributed to students as respondents. The research stages include: (1) primary data collection through questionnaires related to travel characteristics and the use of online transportation applications, (2) data processing using descriptive and statistical analysis to identify travel patterns, and (3) analysis of the relationship between the use of online transportation applications and changes in students’ mobility patterns. The results indicate that the use of online transportation applications significantly influences students’ travel patterns, as reflected by an increase in the frequency of app-based transportation usage, a reduction in dependence on private vehicles, and more flexible travel times and routes. Furthermore, factors such as ease of access, time efficiency, and cost are the main considerations in choosing online transportation modes. This study suggests that the integration of technology into transportation systems can enhance student mobility efficiency and has the potential to support the development of more sustainable urban transportation systems.

Abstract

Soil with high permeability has the potential to cause seepage, which can lead to piping, ground subsidence, and structural failure. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Soybean Crude Urease Calcite Precipitation (SCU-CP) method in reducing soil permeability coefficients through a falling-head test. Soil sample A-6 was classified with a liquid limit (LL) of 39.97% and a plastic limit (PL) of 24.38%. The SCU-CP method used urea and CaCl₂ solutions at concentrations of 1 mol/L and 1.5 mol/L, with the addition of 10–30 g/L of soybean powder. The results showed that soil permeability decreased from 4.01 × 10⁻⁴ cm/s to 1.07 × 10⁻⁴ cm/s (73.32%) with the 1 mol/L reagent and to 4.77 × 10⁻⁵ cm/s (88.10%) with the 1.5 mol/L reagent, both using 30 g/L of soybean powder. These results indicate that the SCU-CP method is effective in reducing soil permeability and has the potential to serve as an environmentally friendly alternative for soil stabilization.
