Abstract

Numeracy and digital skills are among the most crucial skills that any graduate should possess before entering the workforce, regardless of their field of study. Therefore, both skills should not be treated as an “add on” skill but viewed as essential graduate attributes needing to be purposefully incorporated into the curriculum instead of mere chance. By understanding the learners’ numeracy and digital skills abilities, educators can create suitable learning outcomes, activities, and assessments, enabling them to acquire the skills. The objective of this study is to create a framework for testing numeracy (NSI) and digital skills (DSI) using a cross-sectional design and quantitative methodology. The research entails generating a questionnaire, verifying it via a rigorous procedure of expert content validation, and focusing on sufficiency, clarity, coherence, and relevance. A pilot study involving 218 students from various disciplines was conducted to measure the reliability of the framework using Cronbach Alpha. Feedback from experts was then used to enhance the questionnaire, resulting in the finalisation of five components for the Digital Skills Instrument (DSI): information literacy, computer and technology literacy, digital communication and collaboration skills, digital identity and well-being, and digital ethics. Meanwhile, the five components of the Numeracy Skills Instrument (NSI) encompassed operation and calculation, graphical representation, quantitative reasoning and logical thinking, complex number (advanced concept), spatial visualisation and geometric reasoning. The results indicated a strong internal consistency across all components for both tools, with alpha values ranging from 0.847 to 0.958 for DSI and 0.916 to 0.964 for NSI. Corrected item-total correlations also depicted intercorrelation between items for both instruments. To sum up, the findings demonstrate that the DSI and NSI have high reliability and validity. Because both tools are reliable and valid for measuring digital and numeracy skills in the Malaysian context, they can be confidently used for future research.

Abstract

This case study explored Grade 12 learners’ misconceptions in limits of functions. The study aimed at understanding problems that learners face in learning the concepts of limit by analyzing misconceptions that learners have and identifying the possible sources of these misconceptions to take remedial action. An exploratory research design was adopted, and purposive sampling employed to select 35 Grade 12 learners (21 females and 14 males) who wrote a test on limits. From the 35 learners who wrote the test, five learners were interviewed guided by their written responses. Theoretically, the study was guided by the constructivism theory and used a systematic error conceptual framework to categories the learners` misconceptions according to extrinsic and intrinsic calculus misconceptions. The study sought to answer the questions: (a) What type of misconceptions do Grade 12 learners exhibit in responding to limit questions? (b) What are the possible sources of these misconceptions? The study found that Learners exhibited misconceptions on the limit concept and related symbolism. Learners who had a flawed understanding of algebraic concepts struggled to apply limits correctly. The weak foundation on algebraic skills impacted negatively on their learning of new concepts on limits. The study recommends that, educators should always check and make sure that learners have appropriate prior knowledge before the teaching of new concepts in calculus. It is recommended that that teaching and learning approaches need to be adjusted to give equal weight to both the procedural and the conceptual understanding of mathematical knowledge in learners.

Abstract

The rapid onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, also known as the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak, has brought to light how important technology may be to the socio-economic development of a nation, particularly in Africa. The study conducted a narrative review of pertinent literature to objectively assess the effects of two types of emerging digital technologies (Artificial Intelligence [AI]) and nanotechnologies in Africa. The results showed that emerging technology-related research, development, and deployment are happening throughout Africa. Nanotechnology and AI have had a substantial impact in many spheres of African economies. The study, however, acknowledges in its conclusion that not all African nations have derived the same benefits from emerging technologies, including the digitalisation processes. There are still large disparities in the accessibility of technology and digital skills in several rural and underdeveloped areas in Africa. Thus, recommendations on how to close these gaps are provided for all African countries to profit more consistently from the emerging technologies and the digitalisation processes.

Abstract

The impact of training, remuneration, and teamwork factors on job performance has been affirmed in the literature. However, not all organizations devote efforts to these critical variables of performance, which has led to employees' poor job performance. Hence, this study examined the influence of training, remuneration, and teamwork factors on job performance among employees of the National Examinations Council (NECO) of Nigeria. The study was located within a positivist paradigm that adopted a descriptive survey design. A purposive sampling technique was adopted in selecting 140 NECO employees, and a random sampling technique was employed to select 100 respondents from the total population of 1000 secondary school registrars. One research question was answered, while four hypotheses were tested in the study. Two research instruments were used for data collection. Data were analyzed using frequency count, percentage, Pearson product-moment correlation, and multiple regression statistical tools. The result showed that NECO employee job performance is excellent. There was a significant relationship between remuneration and job performance (R=0.864 (Sig, .023). There was also a significant relationship between teamwork and job performance R=2.072 (Sig, .022). In addition, a significant relationship existed between training and job performance R=1.143 (Sig, .008), and the combination of the independent variables is effective in predicting employee job performance (F(3,136 ) = 9.224, p< 0.05). Based on the result of the study, it was concluded that the independent variables are critical factors in determining the job performance of NECO employees in Oyo state, Nigeria. Hence, it was recommended that all these factors be given deserved attention and taken seriously by the management to get the best out of its employees.

Abstract

The article investigates four vulnerable learners and their histories of drug misuse in rural schools. The purpose of this study was to conduct a situational analysis with a view to understanding the current drug abuse situation in Zimbabwean rural schools and giving some recommendations on what needs to be done to lessen its effects. The study's mode of investigation was qualitative. As means of gathering data, focus groups and participatory research were used. The participatory research design employed by the study unearthed evidence that indicates that drug abuse has an adverse effect on a learner’s cognitive optimal functioning both in the community and school contexts. The study's findings point to the necessity of teaching parents how to prioritise their responsibilities and liberate them from the mental poverty they currently experience, which is a societal construct that keeps them from finishing their work with their learners. The study further found out that the absence of guidance and counselling exposes learners to more drug abuse cases and culture, thus having a two-pronged impact on the optimal functioning of rural learners. The study makes some recommendations for how the school and the community should work together and coordinate their efforts to manage the experiences of vulnerable students in order to achieve cognitive optimal functioning for rural learners in Zimbabwe.

Abstract

The integration of information and communications technology (ICT) into the education system has led to changes in the way teaching and learning are conducted. These changes have necessitated the need for teachers to have ICT skills that would help them integrate ICT into teaching and learning (T&L). Hence, this qualitative study was conducted to investigate the state of readiness of Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD) teachers in the integration of ICT in T&L in uMgungundlovu secondary schools. Convenience sampling was employed to select nine EGD teachers to partake in this study. Semi-structured interviews and classroom observations were used to collect data. Data gathered from interviews was subjected to thematic analysis, and data gathered from observations was reported descriptively. The findings of this study revealed that EGD teachers in uMgungundlovu District are ready to integrate ICT into the T&L of EGD, as they indicated that ICT integration in EGD lessons is essential. The study further revealed a shortage of ICT resources and a lack of ICT skills among teachers, which hinder the successful integration of ICT. The study recommends that the Department of Basic Education (DBE) provide teachers with ICT training so that those who are technically disadvantaged can be equipped with relevant ICT skills. The study further recommends that DBE give the schools an AutoCAD license, as it has been proven to be a useful ICT tool.

Abstract

Local Item Dependence (LID) is a desecration of Local Item Independence (LII) which can lead to overestimating or underestimating a candidate’s ability in mathematics items and create validity problems. The study investigated the intra and inter-LID of mathematics items. The study made use of ex-post facto research. The population encompassed all 26,086 Senior Secondary School Students three (SSS 3) in Osun State, Nigeria, and 14,936 SSS 3 students were randomly picked as the sample. National Examinations Council (NECO) mathematics items from June/July 2017 served as the research instrument. The calibrated data were subjected to Yen Q3 statistic. Using a multidimensional three-parameter logistic model, the Yen Q3 statistic is the residual correlation of the items calibrated by Jmetrik software. Results revealed that intra-LID was spotted between Item 8 and Item 7, Item 47 and Item 18, Item 28 and Item 21, Item 47 and Item 29, Item 39 and Item 38, Item 60 and Item 47, Item 52 and Item 51, Item 59 and Item 58 with a Q3 index greater than 0.2 rule of thumb. Similarly, inter-LID revealed bundles 3, 6, 7, 13, and 15 with a Yen Q3 index greater than 0.2. The study concluded that intra and inter-LID was discovered in the NECO mathematics item. It was recommended that NECO should consider intra and inter-LID to ensure more credible questions.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the conceptualisation and contextualisation of mixed-methods research within the research methodology paradigm to ascertain the categorisation of mixed methods as a type of research, research design or research approach. The methodology adopted for this paper is qualitative in nature and involves the analysis of documents and contents. The content of journals and books was analysed to review and draw inferences relating to the themes set out for investigation in the study. Thematic analysis was used for the analysis of data for the study. The study revealed that mixed-methods research was situated within the context of types of research, research design and research approach as evident in the result of the systematic review of the articles selected for the study. Findings from the study further revealed that the conceptualisation of mixed methods within the context type of research and research approach was more than that of a research design. This study is novel and has contributed new knowledge in the aspect of research methodology with specific emphasis and definitive conceptualisation, contextualisation, and categorisation of mixed methods as a type of research, research design or research approach. Just like qualitative and quantitative research, there is a need for definitive conceptualisation, contextualisation, and categorisation of mixed-methods research. Meanwhile, this article is a synthesis for further discourse on mixed-methods research to establish a definitive conclusion on mixed-methods research conceptualisation.

Abstract

Choice of career is one of the most important decisions that everyone makes in life. This choice in most cases determines placement in the workplace. The determinants of the choices students make career-wise include parents, peers, passion and perceived prospects among others. The choice of career made by individuals have long-term implications on their employability status most especially in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) which aims at raising global income levels and improve the quality of life for populations around the world through applied science and technology. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The multi-stage sampling procedure was used. A purposive sampling technique was used to select five faculties out of the existing thirteen faculties at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Five hundred (500) undergraduates were selected across the five selected faculties using simple random sampling technique with 100 students selected from each faculty. Descriptive and Inferential statistics were used to analyse the data collected for the study. The study found out that parental values and expectations has significant influence on the career choice of students and that career choice in turn has significant relationship with their employability prospects. The paper recommended among others the need for students to be allowed to make their career choices based on interest and ability with proper guidance by parents and surrogate parents.

Abstract

This study investigated the potential benefits and challenges associated with the implementation of blended learning as a strategy for curriculum recovery and enhancement of student performance in Grade 12 science and mathematics education. Blended learning, which combines traditional face-to-face teaching methods with online learning, was recognized for its capacity to address educational difficulties. The research employed a theoretical framework integrating the Technology Acceptance Model and Sociocultural Constructivism theory to examine the viewpoints of teachers regarding technology adoption and the impact of personal and social interactions on learning outcomes. A qualitative interpretive case study design was employed, and interviews were carried out with four science and mathematics teachers. The findings revealed that teachers acknowledged the advantages of blended learning, including its potential to overcome barriers to learning and augment student engagement. However, external challenges about technology infrastructure, limitations of online platforms, and the necessity for professional development were identified. Teachers displayed varying levels of internal challenges, including familiarity and confidence in implementing blended learning. The study underscored the importance of continuous support, infrastructure development, and pedagogical training to effectively integrate blended learning into science and mathematics classrooms. Therefore, by addressing these challenges and capitalizing on the benefits of blended learning, the potential for improving curriculum recovery and enhancing student performance in the face of disruptions caused by natural disasters and other educational obstacles was emphasized.
