Abstract

Law No. 19 of 2016 electronic information and transactions has caused an overlapping issue in journalism. However, there is Law No. 40 of 1999, which regulates and guarantees press freedom. Unfortunately, many journalists have become a victim of the Law itself. Such a condition will distort Indonesia’s public sphere, where journalism is a supportive instrument. As per Foucault’s panopticon theory, the researcher sees this Law as a supervision instrument to monitor the activity of Indonesia’s press so that they do not produce such a critical news point of view and eventually threaten the authorities. This article uses a narrative approach to break down the relationship between Indonesian Electronic Information and Transactions. The result shows that this Law can either be a supervision instrument. Nevertheless, on the other hand, for journalists, this will potentially limit their freedom since the authorities see their activity as a threat to the government.

Abstract

The presence of podcasts is a form of development of radio journalism practice in the era of convergence. This article discusses three podcast programs on Tempo media: Berita Utama Koran Tempo, Apa Kabar Tempo, and Celetuk Bahasa Tempo. This article uses a qualitative approach to examine how the play on-demand aspect as one of a podcast's characteristics works in radio journalism practices. The results show that three Tempo podcast content applies content production practices that cannot be separated from the character of radio media, such as auditive, emphasizing conversation, at a glance, and global. The article also shows that although podcasts come with the concept of play on-demand that allows listeners to re-listen to old episodes, podcasts have not succeeded in building interaction between the mass media and their listeners. Thus, interactivity as one of the characteristics of radio journalism has not been fully present in this podcast.

Abstract

Media coverage of online prostitution is often present with sensational rather than informative news in the media room. This article aims to show how the online media Akurat.co reported continuously on the online prostitution case of an Indonesian celebrity for nine days, July 13-21, 2020. This article uses political economy theory with a critical perspective to describe how the practice of commodification of online prostitution news takes place to increase site traffic for economic gain. The results show that for nine days, Akurat.co uploaded 69 news about the issue of online prostitution on several channels. Analysis of the content shows that the media carry out commodification practices by producing sensational content and revealing the celebrity's private lives related to her prostitution case to increase news site traffic instead of giving literacy and providing the correct information about the issue.

Abstract

News coverage on natural disaster issues often appears from various academic, theological, and mystical perspectives. This article explores how the reporting model developed by Detik.com, Kompas.com, and pikiranrakyat.com in writing on the megathrust tsunami issue from the perspective of science journalism and how the three media's writing differs on this issue. This article uses the constructivist paradigm and the perspective of science journalism to see an overview of the practice of producing natural disaster issues in online media. The results show that the three online portals have succeeded in providing actual and factual information about natural disaster issues scientifically and, at the same time, increasing the reader's understanding of the early-warning system. Thus, this article illustrates that media should report disasters issues scientifically so the readers will think critically and empirically and support the change of disaster approach from curative to preventive.

Abstract

The Indonesian government's decision to dissolve the Front Pembela Islam (FPI) has sparked controversy. Republika.co.id is one of the online media that intensively reported on the disbandment of FPI three days after the government's decision was delivered, which was to release 47 stories on its online site. This article aims to find out how the Republika.co.id media framed the issue concerning the history of Republika as a media that was created by the Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals Association (ICMI), one of the famous Islamic groups in Indonesia. In addition, this article also analyzes how media framing is related to media ownership to see the media's alignment with power. This article uses framing analysis by Zhongdang Pan and Gerald M. Kosicki to determine how the text strategy of media builds frames. The results show that the Republika.co.id remains critical of the government's policy of disbanding FPI as an organization even though the media owners are part of the government.

Abstract

This article aims to determine the relationship between the intensity of access to social media with students' perceptions of the Poetry "Doa yang Ditukar." This research uses the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) theory, examining the correlation between stimulus exposure and objects' responses. In addition, this research also uses a survey method on 115 students of the Nadhatul Ulama community at the UIN Sunan Kalijaga Jogja Campus. The results of hypothesis testing with Pearson's Product Moment Correlation show a correlation score of 0.338 with p = 0.000 (p > 0.05), which means that there is a significant relationship in low level between the access intensity of social media and perceptions of poetry.
