Abstract

This research aims to show Nahdlatul Ulama's views regarding the proper role of Islam in Indonesian public life. The views of Nahdlatul Ulama are represented in a journal published by Nahdlatul Ulama, namely Tashwirul Afkar. This research will explore the discussion in the journal Tashwirul Afkar by focusing on three areas: history, intellectualism and sharia. h These three areas have been chosen because they reflect NU's views regarding the proper role of Islam in Indonesian public life. The relationship between Islam and the state is conceptualized by differentiating Islamic values and formalities. In the life of an Islamic state, it is used as an inspiration, not as a state aspiration, so NU describes it as a state based on Islamic values, not Islamic formalities. NU's reluctance to apply the formalities of Islamic law (shariah) has a fiqh basis, so even though NU supports state law, NU will accept national law as long as it does not conflict with sharia law. In short, the journal Tashwirul Afkar has articulated a set of viewpoints from within NU on the proper role of Islam in Indonesian public life. This research seeks to add to our understanding of the diversity of voices and aspirations within Nahdlatul Ulama in Indonesia today.

Abstract

This research explores the tolerance practices teachers and students in schools apply. It aims to analyze the tolerance practices by teachers and students in daily life in a pluralist school environment and find out how to resolve conflicts in pluralist schools. The research uses the qualitative method. The used approach is the sociology of religion with the emic-ethical method. The data collection techniques are observation and interviews. The results show: first, tolerance has taught positive values  to respect people with different backgrounds. Second, various religious activities can bring out attitudes and values of tolerance between teachers and students. Third, for any problems, there must be a mediator to intervene and resolve the problems that occur so that conflicts can be resolved properly and back to upholding a pluralist attitude.

Abstract

Fiqh, or in another term were called as Islamic jurisprudence, are the conceptions which are required by the Muslims to organize their interests in all aspects of life, provide the basics of the system of worship, administration, commerce, politics, social, and civilization. This article aims to trace and elaborate on the term "Civilization Fiqh.," or known as “Fiqh Peradaban”. It was initiated by Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) towards its one-century birth. By exploring and unraveling the genealogy of substantive thinking on the countenance of NU Fiqh as the epistemological basis for the ideas of “Civilization Fiqh”. The library method is used in writing this article. This article uses a descriptive-analytic approach; it tries to explain in an analytical-consistent manner through rigorous reading to unravel the transmission of the NU Fiqh reasoning constructions to obtain a fresh and modern formulation of "Civilization Fiqh.” The results of the discussion of this article include 1) It needs reading and interpretation of the reasoning of the Pesantren tradition to redefine the Islamic scientific tradition, which is seen as less adaptive to the changing realities of the new world order but has not lost its identity by the currents of modernity; 2) NU needs to expand the discussion of “Civilization Fiqh” not only on political issues and the nation-state. This genealogically was carried about simultaneously by NU activists, academics, ulama, even PBNU itself (2000-2019). Issues related to human rights (labor fiqh), injustice, gender (women fiqh), extraordinary crime (anti-corruption fiqh), and environmental destruction (energy fiqh, waste management fiqh). So it is no exaggeration if “Civilization Fiqh" in the future can discuss the reality of 21st-century society: free economy, internet technology society of think, building the smallest nation element: family with counter-discourse which capture the trending issue of childfree, demography fiqh, etc.

Abstract

The profound changes brought by modernity gave Muslims hope for a "new awakening" through modernity's promises of freedom, rationality, science and progress. However, it also had a traumatic impact on Muslims as authoritarian regimes primarily carried out modernization. This has led to religious reactions, on the one hand triggering the emergence of an Islamic revivalist movement that offers an exclusive Islamic narrative, on the other hand, triggering the reaction of ulama who try to make peace with the "new age" by reinterpreting tradition. This paper explores how the ulama responds to social change due to modernity. This paper departs from the question, is it true that ulama are always conservative and resistant to change, as is a common perception? The method of this paper is descriptive-objective, but it is not simply a detached "descriptive-objective" analysis, as if the author is not involved. The author is clearly part of and involved in the issues discussed here. An important finding of this paper is that the image of the ulama as conservative and resistant to change is a false assumption. But on the other hand, it must also be recognized that conservative elements exist in the ulama. At the same time, we also find progressivism and a desire for progress in them, although the pace of change they want is not as fast as the progressives out there expect. What appears before us is actually not a black-and-white image. There are diverse and complex dynamics in the ulama.

Abstract

Mahmud Yunus was the first ulama of Nusantara who expand to al-Azhar, Cairo, Egypt. He studied with several leading ulama to study knowledge of the Qur’an and tafsīr. When he returned to Indonesia, Mahmud Yunus brought with him the traditions of the Qur’anic interpretation that he had found at al-Azhar, Cairo, Egypt, then poured them into the Book of Tafsīr Qur'an Karīm. This research aims to find out the knowledge transmission that was formed between the interpreters of al-Azhar, Egypt and Mahmud Yunus, and the forms of interpretation traditions contained in Mahmud Yunus' Tafsīr Qur'ān Karīm. In order to uncover the ideological transformation of the Nusantara interpretation in this study, the hermeneutic method is used. The research results indicate that there are several tafsīr traditions contained in Tafsīr Qur'ān Karīm, including the knowledge tradition of interpretation, where Mahmud Yunus adopted Mustafa al-Maraghi's thoughts while studying at al-Azhar in Cairo, Egypt. Also the tradition of social interpretation where Mahmud Yunus adopted the thoughts of Rasyid Ridha and Abduh. These traditions continue to develop up today, not even a few interpreters interpret the Qur'an with a scientific and social approach, such as Tafsīr al-Azhar by Hamka, Tafsīr al-Bayan by Hasbi Ashidiqi, Tafsīr al-Furqan by A Hasan, and tafsīr.
