Abstract

The study examined the influence of dietary practices on the academic performance of boarding school adolescents. The sample consisted of 264 selected boarding school students from forms one, two and three, respectively. A multistage sampling procedure was adopted in the selection of respondents and structured questionnaire was the main instrument for data collection. The Cronbach’s alpha reliability of the instrument was 0.82. Data were quantitatively analysed using descriptive statistics and presented in the form of tables. The study revealed that consumption of unhealthy snack foods, skipping of meals especially breakfast and low intake of fruits and water were dietary practices which were influenced by several factors with hunger ranking highest. It was concluded that the students engage in poor dietary practices such as skipping of breakfast, and excessive snacking. Recommendations given included; educating the students on the importance of adopting positive dietary practices such as regular breakfast intake and moderate snacking in order to maintain general wellbeing, remain active in class and achieve higher test scores throughout their course period.

Abstract

The study is an information analysis about the assessed awareness of the attitudes of health workers and outpatients’ recovery in public hospitals in Nigeria. Specifically, the study examined negligence and aggressive behaviour by health workers on outpatients’ recovery in public hospitals. The study was carried out in public hospitals in Calabar Metropolis, Nigeria. The cross-sectional design method was adopted to collect empirical data from outpatient in the hospitals for three months. The study adopted the purposive and volunteer sampling techniques in identifying 400 respondents for the study. Data collected were analysed using simple percentages and Chi-squared statistical tools. Results revealed that there is significant relationship between negligence by health workers and outpatients’ recovery (χ2 = 13.45 ≥ 7.815), health workers’ aggression significantly affect outpatients’ recovery (χ2 = 97.09 ≥ 7.815). Based on these findings, it was recommended among others that management of public hospitals should put on measures to curtail attitudes of negligence by staff towards patients, by installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras specifically along service points. Management of public hospitals should impose stiff and stringent penalties on staff found to be aggressive towards patients.

Abstract

Machine learning is used in a variety of computational tasks where designing and programming explicit algorithms with good performance is not easy. Applications include email filtering, recognition of network intruders or malicious insiders working towards a data breach. In this article we will focus on basics of machine learning, tasks and problems and various machine learning algorithms. The article discusses the Python programming language as the best language for automating machine learning tasks.

Abstract

Decision making has become quite a critical factor in our everyday living. The provision of data alongside its consequent processing has further sought to extend and expand our reasoning faculties as well as effectively aid proper decision making. But data is daily, produced at an exponential rapid rate and the volume in amount of data churned out to be processed even more so that we now require data storage optimization techniques to process such humongous volume of data. These have today, necessitated the need for advancement in data mining process. With the tremendous advances made in data mining, machine learning, storage virtualization and optimization – amongst other fields of computing – researchers now seek a new paradigm and platform called data science. This field today has become quite imperative as it seeks to provide beneficial support in constructing models and algorithms that can effectively assist domain experts and practitioners to make comprehensive and sound decisions regarding potential problematic cases. We focus on modeling social graph using implicit suggest algorithm in medical diagnosis to effectively respond to problematic cases of Tuberculosis (TB) in Nigeria. We introduce spectral clustering and Bayesian Network, construct algorithms cum models for predicting potential problematic cases in Tuberculosis as well as compare the algorithms based on data samples collected from an Epidemiology laboratory at the Federal Medical Center Asaba in Delta State of Nigeria. The volume of data was collated and divided into two data sets which are the training dataset and the investigation dataset. The model constructed by this study has shown a high predictive capability strength compared to other models presented on similar studies.

Abstract

Despite the benefits inherent with social interactions, the case of epidemics cum pandemic outbreaks especially the case of the novel corona virus (covid-19) alongside its set protocols employed to contain the spread therein - has continually left the world puzzled as the disease itself has come to stay. The nature of its rapid propagation on exposure alongside its migration spread pattern of this contagion (with retrospect of other epidemics) on daily basis, has also left experts rethinking the set protocols. Our study involved modelling the covid-19 contagion on a social graph, so as to ascertain if its propagation using migration pattern as a threshold parameter can be minimized via the employment of set protocols. We also employed a design that sought to block or minimize targeted spread of the contagion with the introduction of seedset node(s) using the susceptible-infect framework on a time-varying social graph. Study results showed that migration or mobility pattern has become an imperative factors that must be added when modelling the propagation of contagion or epidemics.

Abstract

The main focus of this paper is on the use of resampling techniques to construct predictive models from data and the goal is to identify the best possible model which can produce better predications. Bagging or Bootstrap aggregating is a general method for improving the performance of given learning algorithm by using a majority vote to combine multiple classifier outputs derived from a single classifier on a bootstrap resample version of a training set. A bootstrap sample is generated by a random sample with replacement from the original training set. Inspired by the idea of bagging, we present an improved method based on a distance function in decision trees, called modified bagging (or weighted Bagging) in this study. The experimental results show that modified bagging is superior to the usual majority vote. These results are confirmed by both real data and artificial data sets with random noise. The Modified bagged classifier performs significantly better than usual bagging on various tree levels for all sample sizes. An interesting observation is that the weighted bagging performs somewhat better than usual bagging with sumps.

Abstract

Object detection and tracking are essential and testing undertaking in numerous PC vision appliances. To distinguish the object first find a way to accumulate information. In this design, the robot can distinguish the item and track it just as it can turn left and right position and afterward push ahead and in reverse contingent on the object motion. It keeps up the consistent separation between the item and the robot. We have designed a webpage that is used to display a live feed from the camera and the camera can be controlled by the user efficiently. Implementation of machine learning is done for detection purposes along with open cv and creating cloud storage. The pan-tilt mechanism is used for camera control which is attached to our 3-wheel chassis robot through servo motors. This idea can be used for surveillance purposes, monitoring local stuff, and human-machine interaction.

Abstract

Cardiac Monitoring refers monitoring heart activity to determine patient’s condition relative to their cardiac rhythm. The reason of having cardiac monitoring is to determine any unusual activity of heart; so that it can diagnosed before the severity condition of patient increases. There are many ways to determine condition of health of heart. There are many others, however, in this paper flexible and comfortable ways are discussed without inconvenience for the patient. For example – flexible device on the finger, flexible skin like monitor small enough size of a bandage, and self-powered cardiac pacemaker using nanogenerator.

Abstract

This is a response to article by Dr. Ramadhan Tosepu and his colleagues entitled: “Correlation between the weather and the Covid-19 pandemic in Jakarta, Indonesia” in Science of The Total Environment, Vol. 725; and Dr. Muhammad Farhan Bashir and his colleagues entitled: “Correlation between the climate indicators and the Covid-19 pandemics in New York, USA.” in Science of The Total Environment, Vol. 728. We agree with the results of their research, but there are things that need to be clarified in relation to the selection of the Spearman-rank correlation as an analytical tool, because the selection of this analysis is without the normality test of the data. Spearman-rank correlation is useful for non-normally distributed continuous data; can be used for ordinal data; and is relatively robust for outliers.

Abstract

The World Wide Web (www) has become an interactive medium for millions of Internet users across the world, daily visiting occur for various purposes. However, their behavior could be monitored by various service providers or company’s website they visited for several purposes. Thus, we can see that if certain data pre-processing techniques are practiced correctly, results will be of high quality and in turn provide substantial evidence of the user and its web session. This paper provides a way of knowing user behavior on the web. It explains the use of cookies: Cookies allow you to do many things such as log on to Internet Banking, have us 'remember' your log-in preferences, when logging on, a pop-up window appears stating the service is not available and to try later. A misspelled domain name in the address line. Lotteries that charge a fee to collect your winnings, apply for products and services online, and use financial tools like our ‘find and compare’ mortgage calculators., servers, and proxy logs with some scripting to be able not only to get a user’s IP address but also get personal information like age, identity, and any other credential as long as the user puts them down while using the web.
