Abstract

Purpose – This study measures the prevalence of depression and the factors that determine it among adolescents and young adults in Nsukka Local Government Area, Enugu State. Method – Six research questions and six null hypotheses guided the study. The design of the study was a descriptive survey design.  A sample size of 150 adolescents and 150 young adults participated in the study. Three instruments were used to generate data. Mean and Standard Deviation were used to answer the research questions, while the t-test was used to test the null hypotheses at the .005 level of significance. Result – Findings of the study revealed that the prevalence of depression among adolescents are in existence as well as the prevalence of depression among young adults. Additionally, the findings also showed that the extent to which psychological, biological, and environmental factors contribute to depression among adolescents and young adults are high, while the symptoms of depression experienced by adolescents and young adults are positive. Implication – Some recommendations were made which include among others that: awareness programs should be implemented by governments and counsellors to help adolescents and young adults develop resilience skills to cope with environmental stressors, schools should provide training for teachers and staff members to recognize the signs of depression and offer appropriate support to students, governments should allocate resources to expand access to mental health services for adolescents and young adults, including increasing the availability of counselling services in schools. Originality/Value – This research is a research that discusses the measuring the prevalence and factors determining depression among adolescents and young adults. *** Tujuan – Studi ini mengukur prevalensi depresi dan faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhinya di kalangan remaja dan dewasa muda di Wilayah Pemerintahan Lokal Nsukka, Negara Bagian Enugu. Metode – Enam pertanyaan penelitian dan enam hipotesis nol menjadi panduan dalam penelitian ini. Desain penelitian menggunakan desain survei deskriptif. Sebanyak 150 remaja dan 150 dewasa muda berpartisipasi dalam penelitian ini. Tiga instrumen digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data. Rata-rata dan Simpangan Baku digunakan untuk menjawab pertanyaan penelitian, sementara uji t digunakan untuk menguji hipotesis nol pada tingkat signifikansi 0,005. Hasil – Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa prevalensi depresi di kalangan remaja dan dewasa muda memang ada. Selain itu, temuan juga menunjukkan bahwa kontribusi faktor psikologis, biologis, dan lingkungan terhadap depresi di kalangan remaja dan dewasa muda cukup tinggi, sementara gejala depresi yang dialami oleh remaja dan dewasa muda bersifat positif. Implikasi – beberapa rekomendasi diajukan, di antaranya: program kesadaran harus dilaksanakan oleh pemerintah dan konselor untuk membantu remaja dan dewasa muda mengembangkan keterampilan ketahanan dalam menghadapi stresor lingkungan, sekolah harus memberikan pelatihan bagi guru dan staf untuk mengenali tanda-tanda depresi dan memberikan dukungan yang sesuai kepada siswa, pemerintah harus mengalokasikan sumber daya untuk memperluas akses layanan kesehatan mental bagi remaja dan dewasa muda, termasuk meningkatkan ketersediaan layanan konseling di sekolah. Orisinalitas/Nilai – Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian yang membahas pengukuran prevalensi dan faktor-faktor yang menentukan depresi di kalangan remaja dan dewasa muda.

Abstract

Purpose – This study examines the impact of educators’ perceptions on the effectiveness of the Guidance and Counselling (G&C) programme in Hwange Urban secondary schools. The objectives were to explore teachers’ attitudes toward G&C, determine how their perceptions influence programme implementation, and identify factors that facilitate or hinder successful delivery. Method – A qualitative research design was adopted, using semi-structured interviews and document analysis to collect in-depth data. The sample consisted of 20 participants, selected purposively: 12 teachers, 4 school counsellors, and 4 school administrators. Result – Findings revealed that while educators generally acknowledge the importance of G&C in promoting learners’ academic, social, and emotional well-being, inconsistent understanding of the programme, limited training, heavy workloads, and inadequate resources significantly impede effective implementation. Positive perceptions were associated with greater commitment, wider integration of G&C activities, and stronger support for learners. Implication – The study highlights the need for targeted professional development, institutional support, and policy reinforcement to enhance educators’ confidence and participation in G&C. Originality/Value – The originality of this article lies in its contextualised exploration of educators’ perceptions within a Zimbabwean urban setting, offering insights that can inform programme strengthening, policy formulation, and future research on school-based counselling services. *** Tujuan – Studi ini mengkaji dampak persepsi pendidik terhadap efektivitas program Bimbingan dan Konseling (B&K) di sekolah menengah perkotaan Hwange. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengeksplorasi sikap guru terhadap B&K, menentukan bagaimana persepsi mereka memengaruhi implementasi program, serta mengidentifikasi faktor-faktor yang memfasilitasi atau menghambat pelaksanaan program yang sukses. Metode – Desain penelitian kualitatif digunakan, dengan wawancara semi-terstruktur dan analisis dokumen untuk mengumpulkan data mendalam. Sampel terdiri dari 20 peserta yang dipilih secara purposif: 12 guru, 4 konselor sekolah, dan 4 administrator sekolah. Hasil – Temuan menunjukkan bahwa meskipun pendidik umumnya mengakui pentingnya G&C dalam mempromosikan kesejahteraan akademik, sosial, dan emosional siswa, pemahaman yang tidak konsisten tentang program, pelatihan yang terbatas, beban kerja yang berat, dan sumber daya yang tidak memadai secara signifikan menghambat implementasi yang efektif. Persepsi positif terkait dengan komitmen yang lebih besar, integrasi yang lebih luas dari aktivitas G&C, dan dukungan yang lebih kuat bagi siswa. Implikasi – Studi ini menyoroti kebutuhan akan pengembangan profesional yang ditargetkan, dukungan institusional, dan penguatan kebijakan untuk meningkatkan kepercayaan diri dan partisipasi pendidik dalam G&C. Orisinalitas/Nilai – Keaslian artikel ini terletak pada eksplorasi kontekstual persepsi pendidik dalam lingkungan perkotaan Zimbabwe, yang menawarkan wawasan untuk memperkuat program, merumuskan kebijakan, dan penelitian masa depan tentang layanan konseling berbasis sekolah.

Abstract

Purpose – This study investigated the unexpected shift in marital relationships: stress and coping strategies among single mothers in Nigeria. This category of people has been neglected in the background in the scheme of events in Nigeria, and it is alarming that this neglect affects the mental health of single mothers. Method – This qualitative research adopted an interpretive research paradigm. Data were gathered from fifteen (15) single mothers using semi-structured interviews between November 2024 and February 2025. Collected data was deductively analysed based on recurring themes relating to stress and coping strategies of single mothers who were once in a marital relationship. Result – The study found that financial constraints, stigmatization, disinheritance, and assault were the major stressors confronting the well-being of single mothers in Nigeria. In a bid to cope with the breasting adversities negatively affecting single mothers, this study found the exploration of formal and informal support networks, faith-based religious support, remarriage, and seeking therapeutic intervention as coping mechanisms employed by single mothers. Implication – The government, psychologists/therapists, and relevant stakeholders raise awareness of the availability of counselling services that can assist single mothers in overcoming unexpected challenges. Originality/Value – This study considers single mothers living in remote areas, unemployed, on low incomes, and engaged in menial work. By addressing this knowledge gap, professional counsellors, scholars, religious groups, government support groups, Non-governmental organisations, tiers of government, single mothers, and policymakers will greatly benefit from this study. *** Tujuan – Studi ini menyelidiki pergeseran tak terduga dalam hubungan pernikahan: stres dan strategi penanggulangan di kalangan ibu tunggal di Nigeria. Kelompok masyarakat ini telah diabaikan dalam skema peristiwa di Nigeria, dan mengkhawatirkan bahwa pengabaian ini berdampak pada kesehatan mental ibu tunggal. Metode – Penelitian kualitatif ini mengadopsi paradigma penelitian interpretatif. Data dikumpulkan dari lima belas (15) ibu tunggal melalui wawancara semi-terstruktur antara November 2024 dan Februari 2025. Data yang dikumpulkan dianalisis secara deduktif berdasarkan tema-tema yang berulang terkait stres dan strategi koping ibu tunggal yang pernah berada dalam hubungan pernikahan. Hasil – Studi ini menemukan bahwa kendala finansial, stigmatisasi, pengucilan warisan, dan kekerasan merupakan faktor stres utama yang mengancam kesejahteraan ibu tunggal di Nigeria. Dalam upaya mengatasi kesulitan yang berdampak negatif pada ibu tunggal, studi ini menemukan bahwa eksplorasi jaringan dukungan formal dan informal, dukungan keagamaan berbasis keyakinan, pernikahan kembali, dan mencari intervensi terapeutik merupakan mekanisme koping yang digunakan oleh ibu tunggal. Implikasi – Pemerintah, psikolog/terapis, dan pemangku kepentingan terkait perlu meningkatkan kesadaran tentang ketersediaan layanan konseling yang dapat membantu ibu tunggal mengatasi tantangan tak terduga. Orisinalitas/Nilai – Studi ini mempertimbangkan ibu tunggal yang tinggal di daerah terpencil, pengangguran, berpenghasilan rendah, dan bekerja di bidang pekerjaan kasar. Dengan mengatasi kesenjangan pengetahuan ini, konselor profesional, akademisi, kelompok agama, kelompok dukungan pemerintah, organisasi non-pemerintah, tingkatan pemerintah, ibu tunggal, dan pembuat kebijakan akan sangat diuntungkan dari studi ini.

Abstract

Purpose – The study investigated the prevalence of students’ susceptibility to depression in Obafemi Awolowo University. It also investigated the extent to which academic stress could predict students’ susceptibility to depression. Method – The population for this study consisted of undergraduate students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.  A sample size of 612 undergraduate students was selected using multi-stage sampling procedure. In the first stage, six faculties out of thirteen were randomly selected, using systematic sampling technique. In the second stage, three departments were selected randomly from each of the six faculties, using simple random sampling technique to give a total of 18 departments. In the third stage, accidental sampling technique was used to select 34 students from each of the three departments selected in faculties to make a total of 612 respondents. Data collected were analysed, using frequency counts, percentages and Simple Linear Regression analysis. Result – The results showed that 20.4% of the students had mild susceptibility to depression, 51.5% had moderate susceptibility to depression, while 28.1% had severe susceptibility to depression. The results further showed that 12.6% of the respondents had mild stress from their academics, majority 73.9% had moderate stress from their academics while 13.6% had extreme stress from their academics. In addition, the result reveals that academic stress significantly predict student’s susceptibility to depression at (p<0.05). Implication – The study provides useful evidence that can inform policymakers, counsellors, and universities to develop effective mental health interventions by determining the factors that lead to the psychological distress of students. Originality/Value – The study is important since it offers empirical evidence into the nature and prevalence of depressive symptoms in university students which can be easily ignored in spite of their increased vulnerability to it. *** Tujuan – Studi ini menyelidiki prevalensi kerentanan mahasiswa terhadap depresi di Universitas Obafemi Awolowo. Studi ini juga menyelidiki sejauh mana stres akademik dapat memprediksi kerentanan mahasiswa terhadap depresi. Metode – Populasi studi ini terdiri dari mahasiswa sarjana Universitas Obafemi Awolowo, Ile-Ife. Sebanyak 612 mahasiswa sarjana dipilih menggunakan prosedur sampling bertahap. Pada tahap pertama, enam fakultas dari total 13 fakultas dipilih secara acak menggunakan teknik sampling sistematis. Pada tahap kedua, tiga departemen dipilih secara acak dari masing-masing enam fakultas menggunakan teknik sampling acak sederhana, sehingga totalnya menjadi 18 departemen. Pada tahap ketiga, teknik sampling acak digunakan untuk memilih 34 mahasiswa dari masing-masing tiga departemen yang dipilih di fakultas, sehingga total responden menjadi 612. Data yang dikumpulkan dianalisis menggunakan hitung frekuensi, persentase, dan analisis regresi linier sederhana. Hasil – Hasil menunjukkan bahwa 20,4% mahasiswa memiliki kecenderungan depresi ringan, 51,5% memiliki kecenderungan depresi sedang, sementara 28,1% memiliki kecenderungan depresi berat. Hasil lebih lanjut menunjukkan bahwa 12,6% responden mengalami stres ringan akibat akademik, mayoritas 73,9% mengalami stres sedang akibat akademik, sementara 13,6% mengalami stres ekstrem akibat akademik. Selain itu, hasil menunjukkan bahwa stres akademik secara signifikan memprediksi kerentanan mahasiswa terhadap depresi (p<0,05). Implikasi – Studi ini menyediakan bukti yang berguna bagi pembuat kebijakan, konselor, dan universitas untuk mengembangkan intervensi kesehatan mental yang efektif dengan menentukan faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan gangguan psikologis pada mahasiswa. Orisinalitas/Nilai – Studi ini penting karena menyediakan bukti empiris tentang sifat dan prevalensi gejala depresi pada mahasiswa universitas, yang sering diabaikan meskipun mereka memiliki kerentanan yang meningkat terhadapnya.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to reveal the forms of child abuse and the individual counselling process carried out to treat child abuse victims at PPT Seruni. Method – This study is a field research with a qualitative approach and case studies. Primary data sources include informants from counsellors, assistants, victims of child abuse, foster mothers and shelter mothers. Result – The results of this study explain that there are various forms of child abuse among 14 child clients who are victims of violence. Five of them experienced sexual violence; four other clients were victims of psychological violence; two others experienced social violence in the form of neglect; and three others experienced physical violence. The impact of child abuse on these 14 children varied in severity, namely (1) moderate, (2) serious, and (3) fatal. To reduce these impacts, individual counselling was provided to them. This counselling was carried out in stages, including developing a relationship with the client, analysing the problem, explaining the problem, developing positive behaviour and making changes, as well as evaluation and follow-up to restore the client's condition. Implication – The implications of this study are to provide a theoretical contribution to the implementation of individual counselling in overcoming trauma in child victims of violence and also the various forms of violence against children. Originality/Value – This study on the handling of child abuse through individual counselling can contribute theoretically to the practice of individual counselling in handling child victims of violence at Handling child abuse victims through individual counselling at Seruni Semarang Integrated Empowerment Service Centre, as well as the various factors and forms of violence against children. *** Tujuan – Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap bentuk-bentuk kekerasan terhadap anak dan proses konseling individu yang dilakukan untuk menangani korban kekerasan terhadap anak di PPT Seruni. Metode – Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian lapangan dengan pendekatan kualitatif dan studi kasus. Sumber data primer meliputi informan dari konselor, asisten, korban kekerasan terhadap anak, ibu asuh, dan ibu penampungan. Hasil – Hasil penelitian ini menjelaskan bahwa terdapat berbagai bentuk kekerasan terhadap anak di antara 14 klien anak yang menjadi korban kekerasan. Lima di antaranya mengalami kekerasan seksual; empat klien lainnya menjadi korban kekerasan psikologis; dua lainnya mengalami kekerasan sosial berupa penelantaran; dan tiga lainnya mengalami kekerasan fisik. Dampak kekerasan terhadap anak pada 14 anak ini bervariasi dalam tingkat keparahan, yaitu (1) sedang, (2) serius, dan (3) fatal. Untuk mengurangi dampak ini, konseling individu diberikan kepada mereka. Konseling ini dilakukan secara bertahap, termasuk membangun hubungan dengan klien, menganalisis masalah, menjelaskan masalah, mengembangkan perilaku positif dan melakukan perubahan, serta evaluasi dan tindak lanjut untuk memulihkan kondisi klien. Implikasi – Implikasi dari studi ini adalah memberikan kontribusi teoretis dalam implementasi konseling individu dalam mengatasi trauma pada korban kekerasan anak dan juga berbagai bentuk kekerasan terhadap anak. Orisinalitas/Nilai – Studi ini tentang penanganan kekerasan terhadap anak melalui konseling individu dapat memberikan kontribusi teoretis dalam praktik konseling individu dalam menangani korban kekerasan anak di PPT Seruni, serta berbagai faktor dan bentuk kekerasan terhadap anak.
