Abstract

This study analyzes the politics of identity and colonial legacy in the novel Pulang by Leila S. Chudori using a postcolonial theory approach, particularly the concepts of Homi K. Bhabha. The novel depicts the experiences of political exiles after the events of 1965, who are forced to live in exile and face identity crises. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this study explores how colonialism and political repression shape the characters' social reality and how their identities are dynamic and negotiated in hybrid and ambivalent spaces. The results show that the novel “Pulang” reflects the impact of colonial legacies, which not only influence state policies and social structures but also shape the identities of individuals in liminal positions. Bhabha’s concepts of hybridity, ambivalence, and mimicry reveal the characters' struggles to shape their identities in the transnational realm. In this context, literature serves as a medium to create alternative narratives, challenge state hegemony, and reinterpret the meaning of Indonesian nationalism through a postcolonial framework

Abstract

Poverty and social inequality remain persistent realities in modern society, particularly affecting marginalized groups who are often excluded by unfair economic and political systems. This study aims to analyze the representation of marginalized social classes in the short stories “Social assistance” by Satmoko Budi Santoso and “The Moon That Fell on a Rumbia Roof” by A. Warits Rovi through a sociological approach to literature using Marxist theory. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with primary data derived from the narratives of both short stories and supported by secondary data from theoretical and relevant literary studies. The results show that “Social assistance” portrays the marginalization of Karmin through discrimination in the distribution of social assistance caused by an unjust bureaucratic system, while “The Moon That Fell on a Rumbia Roof” highlights the suffering of Salma, a single mother who experiences labor exploitation and political discrimination. Both stories reveal the inequalities experienced by marginalized classes in economic, social, and political aspects, as well as their diverse responses ranging from submission to symbolic resistance. These works reflect real social disparities and serve as critiques of systems that maintain the dominance of the ruling class. Thus, literature plays an essential role as a reflective medium capable of raising social awareness about issues of injustice. The contribution of this research lies in its effort to enrich sociological studies of literature in Indonesia by examining the representation of marginalized classes and forms of social resistance in contemporary literary works. Future research is suggested to expand the scope to other literary texts with different social and cultural contexts and to combine Marxist theory with interdisciplinary approaches such as feminism or postcolonialism to provide a more comprehensive understanding of social inequality in literature

Abstract

Language in media discourse is not merely a tool of communication but an arena for the reproduction of power and ideology that shapes socio-political reality. The aim of this research is to reveal how textual structures, social cognition, and social context shape the construction of legislative discourse and influence public perceptions of the legitimacy of the DPR (House of Representatives) and the TNI. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with news texts as the primary data source, complemented by supporting literature to strengthen contextual interpretation. The findings show that Detik.com frames the enactment of the TNI Bill by emphasizing the formal legitimacy of the DPR through macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure, including lexical choices, the use of passive constructions, and the omission of dominant actors. The voices of civil society and public protest are presented only in a limited manner, while government actors are foregrounded, directing readers to accept the legislative decision as legitimate and final. The analysis of social cognition reveals that the media shapes collective understandings regarding the legitimacy of state institutions, whereas the social context dimension shows an asymmetrical power relationship between the government and civil society. These findings affirm that media discourse production is not a neutral activity but an ideological instrument to reproduce power domination and control public opinion. This research enhances comprehension of online media discourse regarding military legislation, emphasizing the impact of microstructural strategies and framing on public perception. The findings are expected to serve as a basis for future research to explore cross-media news comparisons, public responses via social media, and the dynamics of legal legitimacy in the context of Indonesian democracy.

Abstract

Despite the increasing body of research on language and identity, heritage language, education, and multilingual practices, a comprehensive bibliometric overview of how these areas have evolved over time remains lacking. This gap limits our understanding of major trends, influential works, and emerging directions in the field. To address this, the study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis of language-related research by mapping publication patterns, keyword evolution, and thematic clusters to identify scholarly developments and underexplored areas. A total of 3,638 articles published between 1913 and 2025 were retrieved from the Scopus database using refined search terms such as “first language,” “mother tongue,” “heritage language,” and “foreign language,” and filtered to include publications in the Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities, and Psychology. MS Excel and VOSviewer were employed to analyze co-authorship networks, keyword co-occurrence, and thematic structures. Findings reveal a steady increase in publication output from 2000 to 2024, with a noticeable surge during the COVID-19 pandemic. The United States and United Kingdom remain dominant in research productivity, though rising contributions from Asia and the Global South reflect a more inclusive scholarly landscape. Influential scholars such as Bialystok and Ellis continue to shape discussions on bilingualism and cognition. Major research clusters include bilingualism and identity, heritage language maintenance, language and migration, and cognitive development. The study concludes that language research is interdisciplinary, collaborative, and increasingly global in scope. It recommends greater attention to indigenous language revitalization and digital multilingualism and urges educators and policymakers to apply these insights to foster inclusive, culturally responsive language education and planning.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the reinterpretation of Nasi Gulung Wonocolo as an effort to preserve intangible cultural heritage in the midst of modernization and changing tastes within the community. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach that includes participatory observation methods, in-depth interviews, and documentation conducted in Wonocolo Village, Bojonegoro Regency. The results of the study show that reinterpretation through innovation in taste, packaging, and promotional strategies is able to maintain traditional values while adapting them to the needs of modern society. Nasi Guroll's integration into the edutourism concept of the Wonocolo Geopark effectively strengthens local cultural identity, increases community participation, and encourages the growth of a culinary-based creative economy. This research contributes to the development of ethnoculinary studies and adaptive cultural preservation, as well as provides practical recommendations for tourism managers and local governments in optimizing the potential of traditional culinary as a sustainable tourism attraction. Further research is suggested to review aspects of digital marketing and cross-sector collaboration to expand the reach of local culinary promotion

Abstract

This narrative review explores the emerging concept of Zillennials, a microgeneration situated between Millennials and Generation Z, by synthesizing existing literature on their defining traits, values, and sociocultural behaviors. The study aims to clarify the characteristics that distinguish Zillennials from their parent generations, addressing the ambiguity surrounding generational boundaries. Using Google Scholar as the primary database, 434 initial sources were screened, resulting in 22 relevant studies. Text Data Mining and thematic analysis were employed to extract recurring themes and construct a coherent generational profile. Findings reveal that Zillennials exhibit hybrid traits, such as being digitally fluent yet cautious adopters of new technologies, valuing work-life balance and flexible arrangements, and demonstrating strong social awareness and ethical consumer behavior. Their communication style favors structured feedback and digital interaction, while their learning preferences lean toward independent, tech-supported methods. As a generational bridge, Zillennials blend the pragmatism of Millennials with the innovation of Gen Z, making them uniquely positioned to mediate cultural and technological shifts. By synthesizing fragmented insights across disciplines, this study provides a consolidated generational profile that advances our understanding of microgenerational identity and its implications. The study concludes that Zillennials should be recognized as a distinct cohort in educational, organizational, and societal contexts. Future researchers are recommended to explore their experiences across diverse settings and examine their responses to rapid digital and economic changes

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the transformation of Malay traditional values in Hikayat Bayan Budiman through an analysis of excerpts or text passages that reflect moral and cultural teachings. Excerpts are used as a basis for tracing how values such as loyalty, honor, wisdom, and respect for family are represented and undergo meaning processing in accordance with the social context of Malay society. The study employs a qualitative approach that includes content analysis and hermeneutics methods. Each excerpt is analyzed to see the process of transformation from traditional customs to a more dynamic and contextual meaning. The results show that the transformation of values in Hikayat Bayan Budiman is found in six excerpts that appear through the delivery of advice, character dialogues, and moral events that emphasize the importance of positive character and local wisdom. The use of excerpts strengthens clear textual evidence regarding the role of hikayat as a medium for both preserving and renewing values, so the results can be optimized for strengthening Malay culture today.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the patterns and functions of Arabic–English code-mixing in Bayou’s song “Call Her Right Now” and to examine its social meanings using Michael Silverstein’s framework of indexical order. The research employs a qualitative approach, drawing on a literature review and textual analysis of the lyrics. The primary data consist of a lyric transcript verified against the audio recording, annotated for types of switching (e.g., insertion, alternation), and analyzed descriptively and interpretively based on principles of indexicality. The results show that the verses are mostly in English, which gives them a cosmopolitan style and serves narrative purposes. The chorus and post-chorus, on the other hand, are mostly in Arabic, which gives them emotional power and shows that they are authentic to the area. The inserted English phrase “call her right now” functions as a cohesive bridge and a marker of prestige. This study contributes by linking micro-linguistic findings on code-mixing in Arabic popular music to indexical order theory, thereby clarifying how linguistic elements construct hybrid identities. Further research is recommended using multimodal and ethnographic approaches (e.g., listener interviews, music video analysis, or corpus-based studies) to empirically test social reception and language-ideological dynamics

Abstract

The investigation of general criminal offenses exhibits several implementation-related phenomena, including wrongful arrests and an overreliance on eliciting confessions from examinees. This study focuses on the investigative process as reflected in the verbaal van verhoor (interrogation record). Within investigative interactions, the object of analysis is the investigator’s MOOD system. MOOD is selected because, as a linguistic resource within the interpersonal meaning domain of Systemic Functional Linguistics, it constitutes the lexicogrammatical basis through which investigators organize meaning exchange in investigative conversations in accordance with particular aims or interests. This research adopts a critical qualitative approach, employed to critically and emancipatorily uncover the realities of investigators’ language use. The study is designed as a case study, examining a general criminal case at the investigation stage within the police institution. The findings indicate that investigative conversations in this case contain 25 instances of MOOD usage by the investigator. The investigator's dominant status and the pursuit of confession drive the interaction, as shown by these results. This study makes two concrete contributions: (1) serving as a reference for the development of emancipatory investigative questioning instruments, and (2) informing the development of teaching materials for forensic linguistics courses using a Systemic Functional Linguistics approach. Future research may employ comparative units drawn from other criminal cases or specific contexts, such as doctor-patient interactions
