Abstract

Centrifugal pumps operating as turbines (PAT) offer a cost-effective solution for micro-hydro power plants. However, their hydraulic performance is compromised by flow separation at the impeller’s outer diameter. This study conducted a transient numerical analysis to evaluate the hydrodynamic effects of modifying sharp blade edges into rounded profiles. The mesh structure setup, consisting of Poly-Hexcore with a k-ω turbulence model using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in ANSYS Fluent with Meshing solver, was validated based on experimental data and applied across a wide operational range (27.75 L/s ≤ Q ≤ 65.0 L/s). Performance characteristic analysis shows that rounded blades significantly improve energy extraction. At the PAT best efficiency point (BEP), efficiency increased from 65.46% to 68.79%, and the power output of the mechanical shaft increased by 29.96%. Physical evaluation of pressure contours and velocity flow line topologies validated these benefits. An impeller with sharp blades causes severe flow separation and generates turbulent vortices that obstruct flow on the suction side of the blades. Conversely, an impeller with rounded blades successfully suppresses vortex formation and maintains a flow topology that adheres to the blade curvature, ensuring uniform momentum transfer to the rotor.

Abstract

An automatic sliding-plug door made of Aluminium 6005A-T6 will be implemented in the High-Speed Train project. According to risk analysis, door hinges contribute to mechanical failure during operation. A Finite element method (FEM) is used to examine the structural integrity of the design. Different loads were applied to the door structure such as interior pressure load 500 Pa and 800 Pa, passenger load 1000 N/m, and additional load in longitudinal, lateral, and vertical direction in accordance with EN 12663-1. The static structural result shows that the maximum von-Mises stress in the door panel is 41.45 MPa. At the upper hinge, the maximum von-Mises stress is 35.53 MPa. While the maximum von-Mises stress in the lower hinge is 53.28 MPa. The static result is below the yield strength of 230 MPa. The fatigue result shows that the life cycle of the structure is 108, which is more than the standard life cycle of 107. The results indicate that the design is safe and can be optimized to reduce weight.

Abstract

Solar still desalination is a simple and low-energy technology for producing freshwater from saline water, however, its practical application is still limited by low evaporation rate and distillate productivity. This study analytically evaluates the thermal performance of a double-slope solar still integrated with a flat-plate solar thermal collector. The objective is focused on assessing the effect of collector integration on useful heat gain, thermal efficiency, and water productivity. The system was modelled using a thermal resistance network under quasi-steady hourly conditions from 06:00 to 18:00 WIB. The analytical model accounts for conduction, convection, and radiation heat transfer, along with the evaporation and condensation processes. The results show that adding the solar thermal collector significantly improves the thermal performance of the solar still. The daily average thermal efficiency increased from 30% to 55% during the dry season and from 25% to 45% during the rainy season. Daily productivity also increased from 0.86 to 1.10 L/m²/day in the dry season and from 0.51 to 0.96 L/m²/day in the rainy season. Therefore, integrating a solar thermal collector enhances solar still performance by increasing thermal energy supply to the evaporation chamber.

Abstract

This study aimed to synthesize iron nitride (Fe3N) material using Fe3O4 as the starting material. The synthesis process included coprecipitation of natural iron sand and gas nitriding under flowing NH3 gas. Semiautomatic coprecipitation apparatus was implemented during coprecipitation process, to improve powder yield and reproducibility of Fe3O4 nanopowders. The results of XRD and SEM showed that the semiautomatic coprecipitation apparatus could produce consistent product in terms of final quantity and powder morphology. Furthermore, Fe3N was produced after gas nitriding for different holding times. Iron oxides, Fe3O4 and Fe2O3, were still detected in the powder, showing that nitriding parameter was insufficient to produce Fe3N completely. VSM measurement on the final powder showed typical soft magnetic behavior, with maximum saturation magnetization of 17.21 emu/g and coercivity at 0.04 Oe after 6 hours of nitriding. This study provided an alternative method for local soft magnetic composite production using abundant Indonesian resources.

Abstract

The study tests how well a Francis turbine runner performs under hydraulic conditions by using reverse engineering methods together with steady-state computational fluid dynamics (CFD) testing. Researchers used 3D scanning to create runner geometry, which they turned into a digital model that they used for conducting numerical analysis. Six guide vane openings were tested using three different operating heads set at 60m, 100m, and 136m. The analysis studied different performance curves, hill-chart characteristics, pressure distribution patterns, and streamline flow patterns. The results showed that discharge and shaft power increased with guide vane opening for all operating heads, while efficiency increased only up to the best efficiency point and then decreased at larger openings. The tests showed that different guide vane openings produced different results because each head operated at its own peak efficiency zone. The hill chart identified a high-efficiency zone, while pressure contours and streamlines showed that medium guide vane openings produced more favorable flow behavior than larger openings. The plant data validation confirmed that the predicted power of 1076 kW matched the reference value of 1050 kW, which resulted in a 2.48% error.

Abstract

Wave energy converter (WEC) technology is currently being explored as one of most promising renewable energy sources. Heaving point absorber is the most used type of WEC because it has a shape that easily adapts to wave conditions. The unreliability in extreme weather and dependence on buoy size caused WEC technology to be underutilized. Research to utilize shape changes is needed to reduce WEC dependence on buoy size. The purpose of this research is to design a WEC buoy showing maximum power absorbed with the minimum value of volume and comparing it with the existing buoy shape such as the basic cone-cylinder and bullet shape. The research begins by determining the variant of dimensions for the cone-cylinder buoy head cylinder height with the value of 0.40, 0.55, 0.70, 0.85, 1.00, and 1.15 in meters and cone concavity diameter with the value of 3.20, 3.90, 4.60, 5.30, 6.00, 6.70, 7.40, and 8.10 in meters. The Simulation process will use Ansys AQWA software with heaving motion values as output to calculate the absorbed power. The optimization process uses the Backpropagation Neural Network (BPNN) method followed by the Genetic Algorithm (GA) on MATLAB software. The optimized parameters will be simulated to validate the prediction of GA. For the buoy volume BPNN training, the best setting is 2 hidden layers, 5 nodes, Log-Sigmoid activation function, 70% training ratio, 15% validating ratio, and 15% testing ratio with 4.59E-09 mean squared error (MSE). For the buoy power absorbed BPNN training, the best setting is using 4 hidden layers, 5 nodes, Tan-Sigmoid activation function, 70% training ratio, 15% validating ratio, and 15% testing ratio with 5.95E-25 MSE. For GA the best setting is generating 500 chromosomes with using weight 0.5. The result of GA is 1150 mm of cylinder height and 7146.10 mm of cone concavity diameter, simulation shows 12.8503 m3 of volume and 3379.00 Watt of power absorbed.

Abstract

The research is motivated by the need to improve the efficiency of the fluidization process in Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) boiler, particularly through optimizing the design of the air cap as the primary air distributor. Fluidization is essential in CFB boiler for enhancing mixing, heat transfer, and combustion efficiency. This study aims to examine the influence of air cap geometry on the fluidization regime, focusing on achieving stable and uniform fluidization. The research involved preparing bed materials, specifically silica sand and coal, and conducting fluidization tests using bell-type air cap. The results showed that innovative bell-type air cap significantly enhance fluidization efficiency, reducing pressure loss by up to 29% compared to conventional designs. This reduction in pressure loss indicates a more energy-efficient process, as less power is needed for fluidization. At higher fluid velocities (220 cm/s), the pressure loss reduction remains notable, though it slightly decreases from 13% to 17%. Additionally, the study highlights differences in fluidization behaviour between the materials: silica sand, classified as Geldart group B, fluidizes easily, while low-rank coal, in Geldart group D, exhibits cohesive properties and a tendency to form agglomerates, complicating fluidization.
