Abstract

Kiai Sholeh Darat’s Tafsīr Faid} al-Rahmān influenced RA. Kartini’s view of Islam, especially on the meaning of the Qur'an, which was previously considered sacred so that no one could interpret it. With Kartini’s request, Tafsīr Faid} al-Rahmān was written using the tartīb mush}afī writing system (following the order of the Mushaf al-Qur’an), using the tahlili interpretation method and the Ishāri (Sufistic) style. The formulation of the problem of this research is how the correlation between the term out of darkness comes the light, then what is the background of writing Tafsīr Faid} al-Rahmān, and why the term out of darkness comes the light is considered a kartini term. The method used is the maud}ū’ī interpretation method or thematic interpretation that explains Q.S. Al-Baqarah (2): 257 with the theme of Kartini’s popularized adage. Analysis of QS. Al-Baqarah (2): 257 produces two interpretations, the first by Kiai Sholeh Darat with his ishārī interpretation that z{ulumāt (darkness) means disbelief and al-nūr (light) is interpreted as faith for believers. Meanwhile, R.A. Kartini interpreted z{ulumāt (darkness) as ignorance and al-nūr (light) as guidance. Then the relevance between the term “out of darkness comes light” (habis gelap terbitlah terang) by Kartini with QS. Al-Baqarah (2): 257 as a representation of the initial openness of science in Javanese interpretation and also the opening of interpretations that could be understood by Javanese society at that time.

Abstract

This research focuses on the issue of patriotism, which is then linked to the foundations of the Qur’an and Hadith, its contextualization with Indonesia (NKRI), and its relationship with the caliphate, imamate, and similar Islamic political systems. The indicators of patriotism and its contextualization with NKRI are important to discuss, given that many circles question the democratic system in Indonesia and consider it a rejected system, taghut, and a form of disbelief, such as groups like Hizb al-Tahrīr (HT), the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), Khilafatul Muslimin (KM) who promote the concept of the caliphate, Shia who promote the concept of the imamate, and the like. The research is motivated by the recent phenomenon of many young Indonesians being affected by the aforementioned ideologies and becoming overly zealous in their religion. This concern is supported by survey results from several institutions. A survey by the Lembaga Kajian Islam dan Perdamaian (LaKIP) on radicalism among students and Islamic Education (PAI) teachers in Jabodetabek from October 2010 to January 2011 showed that nearly 50% agreed with radical actions; 25% of students and 21% of teachers stated that Pancasila was irrelevant; 84.8% of students and 76.2% of teachers agreed with the implementation of Islamic law; and 52.3% of students and 14.2% justified bomb attacks. The Pew Research Center’s 2015 study revealed that about 10 million Indonesians supported ISIS, most of whom were young people. This research attempts to objectively view the above phenomenon based on the Qur’an and Hadith literature and its relation to the concept of dar al-mitsaq, so that the people of this country, especially its youth, do not become overly zealous in their religion. Ultimately, this research concludes that: 1) There are ten indicators of religious moderation practices, including patriotism, which is defined as the feeling that arises from the heart of a citizen to serve, maintain, defend, and protect their homeland from all threats and disturbances, willing to sacrifice for the interests of their nation and country, and love the customs and culture of their nation, thus not easily accepting offers from other nations that could harm their own nation; 2) Like the Medina Charter, Pancasila is a national consensus agreed upon by the founding fathers of Indonesia. All nations within it, without exception, are protected by the state as long as they do not violate the agreement and do not break the law in terms of norms, ethics, and legality.

Abstract

The phenomenon of climate change and environmental damage caused by human activities has become a global issue that affects the ecological balance of the earth. The Qur’an as a guideline for Muslims contains principles that are relevant to climate change mitigation and adaptation, such as balance, moderation, sustainable management, and reforestation. This study aims to explore and analyze the teachings of the Qur’an related to climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts in the context of maintaining ecological balance. This study uses a qualitative method with a library research approach and thematic interpretation. Data were obtained from primary sources, such as interpretation books, and secondary sources, such as related books and articles. The thematic approach of Abd al-Hayy al-Farmāwī and liberating hermeneutics were used to analyze the verses of the Qur’an related to ecology and climate change mitigation. The results of the study show that the Qur’an emphasizes the importance of the principle of moderation in consumption (QS. Al-A'rāf: 31), sustainable resource management (QS. Hūd: 61), readiness and resilience to environmental challenges (QS. Al-Anfāl: 60), and reforestation (QS. Al-An’ām: 99). These principles do not only focus on practical actions but also moral and spiritual aspects as caliphs on earth. The implication of this study is the importance of integrating the teachings of the Qur’an in environmental policies and ecological education to create awareness and shared responsibility in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem for the sustainability of life on earth

Abstract

Religious moderation in Indonesia emerged as a response to increasing intolerance, radicalism, and religious-based conflicts. Despite having a strong foundation, the implementation of this concept still faces challenges such as political and religious polarization, the spread of hoaxes, and the low level of public understanding of religious moderation. M. Quraish Shihab, as one of the contemporary tafsir figures, actively voices the importance of moderation through his writings, including the book “Wasathiyyah: Wawasan Islam tentang Moderasi Beragama”. This study aims to analyze the concept of religious moderation according to M. Quraish Shihab’s perspective, explain its relevance in the context of Indonesian society, identify challenges in its implementation, and provide strategic recommendations for strengthening religious moderation in society. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with a library research approach. The analysis was carried out on primary and secondary sources, including books, journals, scientific articles, and relevant official documents. The analysis technique used is content analysis with a thematic approach. This study found that the concept of religious moderation put forward by M. Quraish Shihab emphasizes balance in belief, thought, and action. Moderation is defined as an effort to maintain a balance between various poles, such as the soul and body, religion and state, and reason and religious texts. This study provides theoretical contributions in enriching the study of religious moderation as well as practical contributions as references for the government, educational institutions, and society in realizing harmony in religious and state life.

Abstract

This research focuses on the importance of understanding the context of jihad to prevent misunderstandings that can trigger conflict in a multicultural society like Indonesia. QS. Al-Taubah has special characteristics that are full of jihad commands in a particular context that require in-depth analysis. This research aims to explore the meaning of the jihad message in QS. Al-Taubah using Jakobson’s semiotic approach, focusing on the communication context which includes sender, recipient, code, context, channel, and message. The research method used is a qualitative method with a library research approach. The data analysis technique utilizes Jakobson’s code and message theory to describe the communication elements in jihad verses. The implications of this research emphasize that a correct understanding of jihad verses can strengthen the principles of religious moderation in Indonesia, such as commitment to agreements, ethics in fighting, and the importance of diplomacy and resolving conflicts fairly. The research results show that the verses commanding jihad in QS. Al-Taubah have two main messages. First, thalab or orders from Allah swt to Muslims to wage jihad with specific goals that are influenced by certain contexts. Second, tahrikul himmah, namely motivation from Allah swt so that Muslims understand that the rewards in the afterlife are much better than worldly pleasures.

Abstract

The Qur’an has a strong ecological dimension, where many verses discuss nature, the earth, and the universe. QS. Al-Naba’s: 9-11 implies ecological principles such as the balance between activity and rest, environmental protection, and ecosystem sustainability. Tafsir Salman ITB provides an in-depth interpretation of the relationship between divine revelation and modern ecological principles. In general, this study aims to explore and analyze the ecological dimensions contained in QS. Al-Naba’s: 9-11 through the approach of Tafsir Salman. Specifically. Specifically, this study aims to identify the ecological values in QS. Al-Naba’: 9-11 and their relevance to ecosystem balance, analyze Tafsir Salman's interpretation of these verses in the context of modern ecology, explore Tafsir Salman's contribution in connecting the ecological message of the Qur'an with the basic principles of the ecosystem, explore the relevance of Tafsir Salman’s views in building ecological awareness based on the principles of the Qur’an, and provide a deeper understanding of the relationship between divine revelation and modern science related to environmental issues. This study uses a qualitative-descriptive approach with an interpretation analysis method. The focus of the study is on the ITB Salman Interpretation related to QS. Al-Naba’s: 9-11, with an analysis of ecological principles such as balance, adaptation, and sustainability. This study is expected to contribute to building ecological awareness based on the principles of the Qur’an. This understanding is important to connect modern science and the values of revelation in maintaining environmental sustainability. The results of this study indicate that QS. Al-Naba’s: 9-11 reflects ecological principles that include the cycle of life, protection at night, and productivity during the day. Salman’s interpretation emphasizes that night is a time of recovery and security, while day is a time of productivity and energy balance. The day and night cycle is an ecological system that supports the sustainability of life on Earth. This interpretation emphasizes the importance of human awareness in maintaining the natural rhythm of the ecosystem for sustainable environmental balance.

Abstract

This article explores how the socio-intellectual environment of 14th-century Damascus shaped Ibn Kathīr’s preference for certain Qur’anic readings (qirā’ah sab’ah) and his rejection of others. While existing studies often examine qirā’ah through philological or theological lenses, few have contextualized them sociologically in relation to local power dynamics. This research addresses that gap by analyzing the interplay between Ibn Kathīr’s locality, interpretive methodology, and authority structures using Pierre Bourdieu’s habitus theory and Max Weber’s conflict of authority. Employing a qualitative approach that integrates textual analysis, historical study, and sociological theory, this study finds: (1) The Damascene scholarly habitus—marked by the dominance of the Ahl al-Hadith tradition and Shafi’ī jurisprudence—formed Ibn Kathīr’s preference for mutawātir qirā’ah like Hafs’s narration from ‘Āsim; (2) Conflicts of religious authority, including tensions with minority sects and Mamluk political structures, catalyzed the exclusion of qirā’ah shādzah such as arjulakum in QS. Al-Mā’idah (5): 6; and (3) Qirā’ah sab’ah functioned as an arena for the negotiation of Sunnī identity, balancing hermeneutic flexibility and theological orthodoxy. This study contributes a novel sociological perspective to tafsir studies, demonstrating that Qur’anic interpretation is not a neutral act, but a socially embedded practice shaped by context, power, and identity.
