Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the prevailing conditions of social media use among undergraduate students of Library and Information Science in a Nigerian University. Simple random sampling technique was used to select a sample of 180 full-time undergraduate students purposely. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze data collected through the administration of questionnaire. Research findings showed that a great number of students of Library and Information Science are addicted to social media for wrong academic purposes. The levels of addiction varied according to four Likert scale type. The highly addiction was among student using WhatApp (40.82%) and not addicted among students using BB chat (13.12%). The demographic indicators provided the obvious results of singles (77.78%) possessing prevalence tendency of addiction, and surprisingly those between the ages of 27-30 (40%) were most addicted. The paper recommends awareness programmes that are tailored to reveal the ills of social media addiction and pave ways to balance use of social media platforms that benefit academic activities among students.

Abstract

Technology is relevant in achieving educational development. Exploring how best to pattern and incorporate educational technology to engender sustainability remains relevant. It is against this backdrop that this study examined the Prospect of online instructional delivery in sub-Saharan African Universities using Google Classrooms ascertained concerning usability and accessibility while examining impending challenges. This study adopted a descriptive survey design. The study population was undergraduates enrolled at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria, a public institution owned by the Federal Government of Nigeria and the most soughed institution in terms of admission in the country. The target population was teacher trainees exposed to online instructional using Google Classrooms for 2018/2019 academic session. The study participants were purposively sampled; a total of 1933 participants. Data were gathered using a researcher designed questionnaire which was face and content validated. Three research questions were stated to examine accessibility, usability and challenges while the tested hypotheses were concerning prospects of Google Classroom for University of Ilorin undergraduates' learning across gender and departmental divides. Both descriptive statistics (Research Questions) and inferential statistics (Hypothesis) were employed in analysing data collected gathered. Significant findings revealed that Google Classroom holds prospects for innovative instructional approach for university undergraduates’ learning. However, there is a need to improve its level of accessibility to undergraduates to maximise its gains by making efforts to alleviate the challenges militating against smooth access to ensure sustainability in higher education in sub-Saharan Africa, apt in the current pandemic era.

Abstract

Google classroom had been used for instructional delivery of courses at all levels of education with tertiary institution inclusive. The use of these technologies had their merits as well as their demerits. This study investigates the reimbursement of Google classroom by undergraduate students for learning vocational and entrepreneurship courses. This study employs the survey method and 250 undergraduate students were purposively sampled. The findings established that Google classroom is very useful for learning vocational and entrepreneurship courses. Gender had no significant influence on the reimbursements of undergraduates’ utilization of google classroom for learning vocational and entrepreneur courses but academic level had significant influence. The study concluded that there could be tremendous increase in lecturers job performance as well as students’ academic performance if Google classroom is employed for lectures.

Abstract

Buku teks adalah salah satu media pembelajaran yang sering dipakai oleh guru. Karena itu, guru perlu paham kualitas dari sebuah buku teks. Untuk membantu guru mengetahui kualitas dari buku teks, maka diadakan analisis secara mendalam kesesuaian buku teks dengan kurikulum yang berlaku, mengenai isi materi dalam buku teks. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Subjek yang digunakan adalah buku teks Bahasa Indonesia kelas XII SMA/MA/SMK/MAK terbitan Kementrian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan edisi revisi 2018. Sedangkan, objek penelitian yang diangkat adalah kelayakan isi materi buku tersebut. Hasil analisis menunjukan isi materi buku teks yang dianalisis masuk dalam kategori layak meskipun terdapat beberapa komponen indikator yang harus diperbaiki. Textbooks are one of the learning media that are often used by teachers. Therefore, teachers need to understand the quality of a textbook. To help teachers know the quality of the textbooks, an in-depth analysis of the suitability of the textbooks with the applicable curriculum is carried out regarding the content of the material in the textbooks. This research used the descriptive qualitative method.  The subjects used were textbooks of Bahasa Indonesia kelas XII SMA/MA/SMK/MAK published by the Ministry of Education and Culture in the 2018 revised edition. Meanwhile, the object of research that was raised was the feasibility of the contents of the book. The results of the analysis show that the content of the textbook material analyzed is in the proper category although several indicator components must be improved.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought changes in various fields of life, including education. The purpose of this study was to describe the challenges faced by teachers and students in e-learning in the Covid-19 pandemic. This study uses a qualitative approach through data collection using an online questionnaire with Google form and structure interview by phone. Respondents consisted of 163 geography teachers and 104 students at the high school level in North Sumatra Province. This data is then analyzed descriptively in the form of scores and percentages. The result showed that the challenges faced by teachers were especially expertise, preparation for learning, access to e-learning, management of learning in the e-learning platform, supporting facilities, and time effectiveness in e-learning. While the challenges faced by students include understanding the material, access to the learning process, discipline in online learning, learning support facilities for e-learning, and the conditions of the learning environment. Pandemi Covid-19 membawa perubahan  pada berbagai bidang kehidupan termasuk bidang pendidikan. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan tantangan yang dihadapi guru dan siswa pada e-learning di masa pandemi. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif melalui pengumpulan data dengan kuesioner online menggunakan Google form dan wawancara terstruktur melalui telepon. Responden terdiri atas 163 guru geografi dan 104 siswa Sekolah Menengah Atas di Provinsi Sumatera Utara. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif dalam bentuk skor dan persentase. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tantangan yang dihadapi guru antara lain keahlian, persiapan pembelajaran, akses e-learning, pengelolaan pembelajaran dalam platform e-learning, fasilitas pendukung dan efektifitas waktu. Sedangkan tantangan yang dihadapi siswa meliputi pemahaman terhadap materi, akses e-learning, disiplin dalam e-learning, fasilitas pendukung dan kondisi lingkungan pembelajaran.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine whether the small group discussion method via breakout room zoom may boost student individual engagement in order for them to be more active and confident in learning speaking. This research study used a qualitative method with applied video analysis and questioners' perceptions of students as instruments. The findings found 17 active participants in the observation speaking class and 35 participants preferred small group discussions using the breakout room zoom application, with the majority preferring small group discussions because it helped them to be more active and confident. This method can also boost their confidence for more active participation for individual speaking in class, and they believe that small group discussions via breakout room zoom are the most effective way to deal with a pandemic.

Abstract

The study examined the perceived conduct of e-assessment of undergraduate courses in Nigerian universities and compared access to e-assessment among undergraduate students in universities in the country. It also determined the relationship between e-assessment-based accountability and test fairness in the conduct of e-assessment in Nigerian universities. These were with a view to improving the assessment outcome directed towards certifying the quality in education by the Nigerian universities. The study adopted a mixed research approach combining both descriptive survey and focus group designs. The population consisted of all undergraduate students who registered for their degree courses at the government and privately-owned universities during 2019/2020 academic session. The sample consisted of intact classes of 450 Parts 2, 3, and 4 undergraduate students who registered for their degree courses. A 32-item self-developed instrument was used in the study. The qualitative data was collected via focus group. Data were analysed using independent t-test, and Pearson Product Moment Correlation statistical methods. The results showed that there existed a significant difference in students’ perception of the conduct of e-assessment in Nigerian universities. Also, there was a significant difference in access to e-assessment among undergraduate students in the universities. Further, a significant relationship existed between e-assessment-based accountability and test fairness in the conduct of e-assessment in Nigerian universities. The study concluded that improper conduct of e-assessment forms a major threat to the fairness and validity of online assessment of students. It was recommended that universities’ Management should employ equitable strategies in the design, development and administration of the e-assessment on campuses in the country.
