Abstract

This study critically examines the claim that Imam Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhab contradicted Imam Ibn Taymiyyah regarding the issue of vows (nadhar) made to other than Allah. Opponents of Imam Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhab have accused him of diverging from Ibn Taymiyyah, alleging that Ibn Taymiyyah regarded vows made to others besides Allah as either minor shirk (polytheism) or merely a sin, whereas Imam Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhab considered them major shirk. The aim of such accusations was to sever the link between the two Imams and to portray Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhab as having no scholarly precedent for his call, thereby undermining the reformist movement he led. This study therefore seeks to clarify the alleged divergence between the two Imams on the issue of vows to others besides Allah by analyzing the texts of Ibn Taymiyyah cited by critics, and to demonstrate the consistency between their rulings. The researcher concludes that no real divergence exists between the two Imams concerning this matter, and that Ibn Taymiyyah in fact considered seeking nearness to others besides Allah through vows as major shirk, which fully accords with the position of Imam Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhab.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the existence and influence of mutawātir readings (qirā’āt) on the determination of legal rulings in Rawā’i‘ al-Bayān fī Tafsīr Āyāt al-Aḥkām min al-Qur’ān authored by Muḥammad ‘Alī al-Ṣābūnī. The research focuses on five selected legal verses that contain qirā’āt variations, namely the words: nansa-hā, yuṭīqūnahu, yaṭhurna, qur’, and arjulakum. It addresses how these mutawātir readings contribute to the formulation of legal conclusions within al-Ṣābūnī’s exegesis. The study employs a qualitative approach, using the comparative exegesis method (al-tafsīr al-muqāran) and a thematic approach to legal verses containing mutawātir readings. The primary sources consist of two volumes of Rawā’i‘ al-Bayān, while the secondary sources include classical and contemporary works relevant to the sciences of qirā’āt and legal exegesis. Documentation and textual analysis methods were applied to uncover the structure of al-Ṣābūnī’s exegesis and the role of qirā’āt in his legal reasoning. The findings show that mutawātir readings play a significant role in enriching the semantic scope of Qur’anic terms and in shaping legal understanding, although they are not always the principal basis for legal preference (tarjīḥ). Al-Ṣābūnī tends to combine the method of exegesis by transmission (bi al-ma’thūr) and exegesis by opinion (bi al-ra’y), with strong reliance on juristic opinions and consideration of the objectives of Islamic law (maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah). In certain cases such as abrogation (naskh) and the waiting period (‘iddah) differences in readings had a direct impact on the legal conclusion. In other cases such as the rulings on ablution (wuḍū’) and menstruation  mutawātir readings served more as a support for semantic breadth rather than as determinants for legal preference. The study concludes that understanding mutawātir readings is essential for the development of Qur’anic legal interpretation in the contemporary era, as these readings are a fundamental tool in constructing legal reasoning within tafsīr. Therefore, the employment of qirā’āt in exegesis as exemplified by al-Ṣābūnī constitutes a significant scholarly contribution to the methodology of deriving rulings from the Qur’an.

Abstract

This research investigates a key jurisprudential principle in the Mālikī school: “If usage does not alter the characteristics of water, then it does not affect its purifying quality.” The study emphasizes that water previously used to remove ritual impurity remains valid for purification, though its use is considered disliked when alternative water is available. If no other water exists, its use is not disliked. A minority opinion, however, prohibits such use, relying on Ibn al-Qāsim’s interpretation of Imām Mālik in al-Mudawwana.The study follows a structured methodology to clarify the principle. It begins by presenting the principle as stated by Mālikī scholars, then explains its meaning, sources, and textual formulations. It examines scholarly differences regarding the accepted narration, highlights the narrations on which the principle is built, and analyzes the reasoning behind preferring one narration over another. The research also explores how unaccepted narrations were addressed, evaluates the evidences supporting the principle, and outlines the positions of Mālikī scholars in both cases of consensus and disagreement. Where agreement exists, the study assesses its legal impact, and where disagreement appears, it analyzes the causes and consequences. Finally, it identifies possible exceptions to the principle, their evidences, and any rulings derived from them. By systematically addressing these points, the research provides a unique and original contribution to the study and service of the Mālikī school. Among the most prominent results of the research: It is permissible to perform ritual ablution and ritual purification with water used by a woman, if the use did not change any of its characteristics: its color, taste, or smell. Likewise, it is permissible to perform tayammum with soil that has been used for tayammum, if no impurity is seen in it.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the linguistic exercises employed in the teaching of applied Arabic as presented in Durūs al-Lughah li Ghair al-Nāṭiqīna bihā, Volume I. The research adopts a qualitative descriptive design using a library-based approach through content analysis of the textbook. The findings reveal that the linguistic exercises in the teaching of applied Arabic in this textbook demonstrate pedagogical excellence through the systematic presentation of three types of varied language drills, all conducted in fuṣḥā (standard Arabic) without translation. These include: (1) pattern drills, which train learners to internalize language use through continuous and repetitive practice with diverse exercise models; (2) semi-pattern drills, which develop learners’ ability to comprehend sentences and apply them effectively in both spoken and written expression; and (3) communicative drills, which cultivate learners’ communicative competence in both monologic and dialogic contexts.

Abstract

This study examines the concept of the call for interfaith rapprochement (Da‘wah al-Taqrīb bayna al-Adyān) and the Islamic stance toward it through an analytical and critical approach based on the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and the statements of Muslim scholars. The significance of this research lies in revealing the true nature of this call and exposing its hidden motives, which aim to merge religions into a single faith and abolish the doctrinal distinctions that Allah has established between Islam and the distorted religions. The study seeks to answer several key questions: What is the reality of the call for interfaith rapprochement? What are its historical stages? What are its motives and impacts? And what is the Islamic ruling concerning it in light of Islamic creed? The researcher employed the inductive method by collecting relevant information from authentic sources and references, followed by analytical and critical examination. The study concludes that the call for interfaith rapprochement is a false and invalid concept that contradicts the fundamental principles of Islamic creed. It is founded on the notion of equating truth with falsehood and Islam with abrogated religions, and it poses serious threats to the faith and religious identity of Muslims.
