Abstract

Purpose. This study explores the awareness of plagiarism among university lecturers in Sri Lanka, with particular relevance to the field of library and information science. It highlights the crucial role of information literacy in addressing plagiarism in academic settings. As academic dishonesty, especially plagiarism, continues to rise, understanding faculty awareness is essential for fostering academic integrity and designing effective prevention strategies. Methodology. A quantitative approach was used, employing an online questionnaire distributed to academics from 17 Sri Lankan universities. A convenience sampling technique selected 104 respondents. Data were analyzed using SPSS through descriptive statistics and Pearson Chi-Square tests to examine relationships between variables. Results and Discussions. About 55.3% of respondents reported clear definitions of plagiarism within their departments, while 22.3% indicated uncertainty or lack of clarity. Most participants (95.2%) discussed plagiarism with students, though awareness varied by academic field. Faculties of aesthetics and commerce showed greater participation in awareness programs than engineering and technology. Additionally, 60.58% of respondents said their institutions used plagiarism detection software. Conclusion. The study indicates generally positive awareness of plagiarism among Sri Lankan university lecturers, but notable gaps exist in some academic areas. The adoption of detection software is a significant step, yet there remains a need for better training and targeted awareness efforts tailored to faculty needs. This research contributes to discussions on academic integrity and emphasizes the importance of continuous education and institutional commitment to preventing plagiarism in higher education.

Abstract

Purpose. Artificial Intelligence (AI) holds great potential for repackaging information in academic libraries, particularly for historical physical collections. Each library must align its information management strategies with institutional development, as seen in the Library of Universitas 'Aisyiyah Yogyakarta (UNISA), which has evolved from a Midwifery School into a university. Two special collections in this library were evaluated to assess the effectiveness of AI-based information repackaging. This evaluation is important to ensure that resource utilization aligns with the outcomes achieved. The study aims to identify the functional value of AI-based repackaging for these collections. Methodology. This descriptive qualitative study was conducted from September to October 2024 at the UNISA Yogyakarta Library. A purposive sampling method was used to obtain in-depth interviews from three informants based on their fields of expertise. Data were collected through observation and interviews. Data analysis included needs analysis, design proposal, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was tested using time triangulation and confirmability techniques. Results and discussion. The results of the study show that most of the AI-based information repackaging functions at the UNISA Yogyakarta Library have fulfilled their functions. However, there is one function that has not been fulfilled, namely as a medium that accelerates the application of research or research results. Conclusions. While the majority of AI-based information repackaging functions have been successful, efforts are still needed to enhance its role in disseminating and applying research results. Strategic development, inter-unit collaboration, and stronger technology integration are recommended to optimize these services.

Abstract

Purpose. This study investigates the deconstruction of the librarian’s role in the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) at university libraries, specifically at Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP), through Jacques Derrida’s social theory. Librarians are expected to act as key connectors between users and credible information. With the increasing presence of AI in libraries, their role becomes even more critical in enhancing the quality and accessibility of information services. Methodology. This research employs a qualitative approach using the literature study method, with data collection conducted through reference sources, reading, note-taking, and processing research materials Results and discussion. At the UNP Library, the librarian’s role is shifting due to digitalization and AI development. Although facilities like Digilib UNP and SIDARING have been introduced, they are not yet fully optimized. The opening of the new Information and Library Center building provides opportunities for innovation, but a deconstruction of traditional librarian roles is needed. Librarians should not be limited to administrative tasks but encouraged to implement AI-based services such as virtual library tours, chatbots, and speech-to-text systems. Domestic and international case studies confirm that AI integration enhances user engagement and service delivery, requiring librarians to be adaptive, creative, and technologically competent. Conclusions. Applying Derrida’s deconstruction theory, the librarian’s role at UNP must be redefined to meet digital-era demands. Main challenges include resistance to change and lack of technical skills. With a transformative approach, librarians can collaborate and innovate using AI, making library services more inclusive, dynamic, and relevant for modern academic needs.

Abstract

Purpose. This study examines the role of school librarians in promoting information literacy in secondary schools within a metropolitan city. It highlights the importance of information literacy, which involves the ability to access, evaluate, and use information effectively. Methodology. The research, using qualitative interviews with librarians from six selected local government areas, investigates how librarians support teachers and enhance educational outcomes. Key research areas include methods used by librarians to determine teachers' information needs, the extent of consultation with teachers on new acquisitions, how librarians inform teachers about available resources, and the adequacy and usage frequency of library resources. Results and discussion. The findings reveal varying levels of librarian engagement, with some actively collaborating with teachers and others taking a more passive approach. Challenges identified include time constraints and resource inadequacies. Conclusions. The study emphasizes the need for better communication and resource management to support information literacy. Despite recognizing its importance, gaps exist in understanding effective librarian practices for empowering teachers and students. Recommendations include fostering librarian-teacher collaboration, updating resource collections, and increasing awareness of available resources to enhance their use in education.

Abstract

Purpose. This study aims to examine the preservation of ancient manuscripts in Indonesia through a systematic review of academic literature over the past decade. These manuscripts, which hold historical, cultural, and educational significance, face growing threats due to climate change, physical degradation, and limited public awareness. Methodology. Using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach, this study analysed 30 peer-reviewed articles published between 2010 and 2023. Articles were selected from open-access databases (Google Scholar, ResearchGate, and Garuda) using specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. The PRISMA flow diagram guided the selection process, and thematic analysis was used to synthesize the findings. Results and discussion. Findings indicate that manuscript preservation in Indonesia follows two major approaches: physical conservation (e.g., fumigation, environmental control) and digital preservation (e.g., high-resolution scanning, metadata development). While digitalization enhances access and reduces handling-related damage, it is hindered by outdated file formats, limited infrastructure, lack of skilled personnel, and legal uncertainties. Community-based efforts, cultural values, and institutional collaborations (such as those in Rekso Pustaka and Ranggawarsita Museum) demonstrate practical and adaptive models for sustainable preservation. Conclusions. The study recommends integrating physical and digital methods in a balanced and context-sensitive strategy. It emphasizes the importance of strengthening institutional capacity, expanding professional training, encouraging local participation, and ensuring policy support to sustain long-term preservation efforts across diverse cultural settings.

Abstract

Purpose. This study aims to determine the extent of the relationship between undergraduate students’ preferences and user engagement on the Instagram account @perpus.undip of Diponegoro University Library. Methodology. This research employs a quantitative approach. Data were collected through a questionnaire distributed to 100 respondents. The collected data were analyzed using correlation analysis with the help of SPSS version 26. Results and discussion. The findings indicate a moderate positive correlation between undergraduate students’ preferences and user engagement on the @perpus.undip Instagram account, with a correlation coefficient of 0.623. This suggests that students’ preferences are generally aligned with the engagement strategies employed on the library’s social media, although several aspects still require improvement to enhance overall user interaction. Conclusions. The study concludes that there is a positive and consistent relationship between library users’ preferences and user engagement on Diponegoro University Library’s Instagram account (@perpus.undip), as evidenced by a correlation coefficient of 0.623.
