Abstract

In South Sumatra, the ​​freshwater swamps is 157,846 hectares, with this wide freshwater swamps, it can be used for crops food  cultivation, one of which is maize. The purpose of this study was to provide information on the identification and attack of maize disease in freshwater swamps of South Sumatra. The research method was purposive sampling. The results of the study identification that the symptoms of maize leaf rust attack, seen from the physiology of maize leaves, were the lumps or pustules of orange color such as rust and the symptoms of maize leaf blight seen from the physiology of maize leaves, were small oval brownish lines like burning leaves. The leaf rust disease had an attack rate of 90% and the maize leaf blight reached 98%. Based on the results of this study, the main disease of maize attacking in the generative phase was the leaf rust (Puccinia polysora) and maize leaf blight (Bipolaris maydis).

Abstract

Planting resistant varieties is the most effective control method and is recommended because it is safe for the environment. The problem to be raised in this study was the use of the same variety of maize in every growing season by farmers. The use of one of these varieties could cause a decrease in yield due to the resistance of the variety to certain pests and diseases.  This study aimed to provide information in the form of the use of sweet maize varieties resistant to leaf blight and potential to be planted in the swampy lowland of South Sumatra. The varieties used in this study were Bonanza F1, MB-01 Sweet and Love Sweet varieties. Based on the results of the study, as a whole the use of several varieties had a significant effect on the severity of leaf blight. The results of this study showed that there were differences in the response to resistance of each variety to leaf blight caused by the fungus Exserohilum turcicum. The observation of disease severity was carried out only in the vegetative phase. The highest disease severity was found in the Bonanza, Love Sweet, and MB-01 Sweet varieties at 16.90%, 9.99% and 7.07% respectively. The production data showed that there was no significant effect on the leaf blight. The MB-01 Sweet variety had the potential to be planted on swampy soil because it had resistance to blight and had a high production rate.

Abstract

Soaking oil palm seeds in a solution of sulfuric acid and gibberellic acid is one way to shorten the dormancy period of oil palm seeds. This study aimed to find out the optimum soaking time of oil palm seeds in sulfuric acid solution to accelerate germination, the optimum concentration of gibberellic acid for oil palm seed germination, the interaction between using sulfuric acid and gibberellic acid in accelerating the germination of oil palm seeds and the best treatment combination in all the tried treatments. The experimental design used was a completely randomized design (CRD), with a complete factorial combination with a total of 16 treatments. Each treatment was repeated 4 times, so there were 64 experimental units and each unit was planted with 5 seeds. The results of statistical analysis showed that soaking oil palm seeds in a solution of sulfuric acid and gibberellic acid had an effect on the germination of these seeds. The duration of soaking oil palm seeds for 48 hours in sulfuric acid solution constituted the optimum time for increasing the speed of germination and giving gibberellic acid at a concentration of 300 ppm still accelerated the germination of oil palm seeds and there was no interaction between the length of soaking the seeds in sulfuric acid solution and the concentration of gibberellic acid.  Soaking the seeds in a solution of sulfuric acid for 48 hours and gibberellate 300 ppm was the best combination treatment to accelerate the germination of oil palm seeds.

Abstract

The quality of chicken eggs is greatly influenced by the nutrient ration consumed. Egg quality can be observed from the external and internal eggs. The ration directly affects the external and internal quality of the eggs. The research objective was to analyze the effect of chitosan addition in the ration on the internal quality of chicken eggs. The study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with 6 treatments and 5 replications, each replication consisting of 2 Silver Arabic Chickens aged 4.5 months. The study was conducted for 7 weeks. The treatments given were: R0 (control ration without chitosan), R1 (ration + chitosan 0.5%), R2 (ration + chitosan 1%), R3 (ration + chitosan 1.5%), R4 (ration + chitosan 2%), R5 (ration + chitosan 2.5%). The parameters were measured in haugh units, albumen index, albumen and yolk weight. The results demonstrate that the addition of chitosan in the ration showed the same results (P > 0.05) on the haugh unit value, albumen index, albumen and yolk weight. The conclusion of this study indicates that the provision of chitosan in the ration has not had an effect on the internal quality of the Silver Arabic Chickens eggs.

Abstract

Intercropping is an alternative that should be developed especially to make maximum use of the land. Aromatic plants such as celery contain essential oils which, among other things, act as pest repellents. Therefore, celery plants can be used as a way of controlling pests by intercropping with chili plants as the main crop. This study aimed to determine the cultivation technology and analysis of the intercropping farming of red chilies with celery at the farmer level. The research was conducted at the Mekar Sari Farmer Group, Paal Merah Village, Paal Merah District, Jambi City, Jambi Province in October 2018. The data collected included primary data in the form of information from farmers as well as secondary data and conditions of the research area, social and economic potential. Primary data were collected using survey techniques, namely interviews with farmers and key information using a questionnaire. Samples were randomly assigned to a population of 15 farmer cooperator farmers who were intercropping red chili and celery at the study site. The data analysis technique included tabulation analysis which was used to understand the farmers' financial farming conditions, and the economic feasibility analysis uses the R/C ratio. The results of the research on the intercropping of red chili and celery, without considering the labor costs in the family, showed that this business was profitable with a total profit of 20,553,500,-IDR This farming has benefited from the production of celery as much as 405 kg, production of red chilies as much as 585 kg, and BEP prices of 15,495,-IDR/kg of celery and 14,143,-IDR/kg of red chilies. The R/C ratio value of 2.

Abstract

Rainfed lowland has great potential to produce rice in South Sumatra Province. Rice cultivation in such marginal lowland needs technological innovation for sustainable use. This study aimed to analyze the crop performance and farming feasibility of a New Superior Variety (VUB) in rainfed rice cultivation. The study was carried out on 2019/2020 in Tugu Jaya Village, Lempuing District, OKI Regency. It was implemented in a demonstration plot of rice cultivation covering 2 hectares, using Inpari 30 and 43 varieties. The plant spacing was in accordance with 2:1 “jajar legowo” planting system. This was compared to the tile planting system outside the demonstration plot using IR 42 variety, which was planted by the local farmers. The results of observations of plants’ performance one day before harvest showed that the tallest plant was IR 42 (109.1 cm), the most tillers were from Inpari 43 (19.7 tillers), the longest panicle was of IR 42 (25.1 cm) and the highest harvested crop grain production was from Inpari 30 (6.8 tonnes/ha). In terms of business feasibility, judging from the resulting production and financial indicators, all three varieties were suitable for planting in rainfed lowland. Furthermore, of the three varieties, Inpari 30 on MH 2019/2020 was the most feasible, with a break-even price (BEPr) of Rp. 3,983 per kg; break-even production (BEP) of 1,568 kg per hectare; revenue cost ratio (R/C) of 2.39 and Marginal Benefit-Cost Ratio (MBCR) of 6.96.

Abstract

Land allocation for agricultural lands is required when the region have potency to be developed while the same time, conservation aspects are still considered. Central Kalimantan Province with total areas of 15, 451, 287 hectares has potential land available for agricultural development. At initial stage, with a landscape scale, land resource potential is needed to be assessed for planning purposes. The aimed of this study was to design the spatial concept of agricultural landscape planning on sustained basis. Methodology used in this include concept of land capability evalution (LCE) approach and geographic information system (GIS) application. The result of evaluation showed that Central Kalimantan was classified into 6 land capability classes i.e class II, III, IV, VI, VII, and VIII with several limiting factors such as peat depth, drainage, slope, and texture. Within GIS environment, the result of spatial analysis shown that total areas of agricultural land region was 9,571,231 hectares or 61.95% of total Central Kalimantan province. This indicates that the lands are still widely available for agricultural development.  These areas are located not only in wetlands typology but also found in dryland areas. Specific program that specific to location can then be formulated in order to develop the areas.

Abstract

The pests that attack each plant phase also varies. The aimed of this study was to compare the main population of rice insect pests and ratooned in lowland rice field in the vegetative, flowering and milk ripening phase. The main bioinsecticide rice sprayed on rice canopy were comes from the entomopathogenic fungal conidia Metarhizium anisopliae, the entomopathogenic bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis, and as a control area without the application of bioinsecticide or synthetic insecticide. The results showed that population of fake white pests (Cnaphalocrosis medinalis) and white leafhoppers pest (Covana spectra) were more prevalent in vegetative phase rice compared to other types of pests such as green leafhoppers (Nephotettix spp.), Brown leafhoppers (Nilaparvata lugens), zig zag leafhoppers. (Recillia dorsalis), white-back leafhoppers (Sogatella furcifera), grasshoppers, mole cricket (Gryllotalpa gryllotalpa), and yellow rice stem borer (Scirpophaga incertulas). The Leptocorisa acuta and green ladybugs (Nezara viridula) began to attack the flowering and milk ripening phase, which was when the rice was aged about 54-68 days after transplanting (dat). Whereas in ratooned rice, the pest population of L. acuta has appeared on the first observation on rice aged 9 days after harvest (dah) until the ratooned rice was aged 58 days after harvesting. The population of pests was higher in land without bioinsecticide application compared to land applied of bioinsecticides. In ratooned rice, the pest population between the land applied with bioinsecticide M. anisopliae and B. thuringiensis was not significantly different from the land applied by B. thuringiensis which was sold in the market.

Abstract

This study was conducted in the coastal area of ​​Banyuasin (CAB) which was considered to have a variety of sedimentation classes originating from fluvial and marine processes. The study aimed to observe/determine changes in the morphology of coastal areas related to sedimentation in the CAB and to make maps related to oceanographic parameters, changes in the land cover and identification of the distribution of sedimentation occurring in the CAB, and the dominant factors influencing the change. This study used imagery interpretation method and the sediment data collection used sediment traps to determine the occurrence of accretion and abrasion. The results of the study showed that there was a change in the environment based on the analysis of Landsat imagery, that have undergone changes are Ekor Tikus island (PET), Tg Api-api (TAA), and the Bungin River (SB), which are affected by the land conversion, sedimentation, and tidal currents. There has been an environmental change in the CAB, especially at the Banyuasin estuary (PET) with a high sedimentation rate. The changes also occurred in TAA and SB, with the dominant factor being the decline in mangrove forests. As a result, it is necessary to conduct a more detailed study and time series related to mangroves.

Abstract

Efforts to increase the productivity of lowland paddy in tidal low land can be conducted through improving planting methods and the use of new superior varieties (NSV). This study aimed to find out the effect of using Amator on the cultivation of new high yielding varieties (NSV) in tidal paddy fields. This study used a Split Plot design, with the main plots namely planting equipment: using Amator and Sonor, and as subplots using NSV paddy: Hipa-18, Hipa-20, Hipa-21, and Inpari 22, with 3 replications. The results showed that the average productivity of NSV paddy using Amator was 5.2 t/ha, while that of Sonor reached 6.5 t/ha. Hybrid varieties (Hipa 18, Hipa 20, Hipa 21) grown using Amator produced taller paddy plants, more tillers and longer panicles than the inbred variety (Inpari 22) grown with Sonor. The productivity of the four NSV paddy tested gave a fairly high GDH (Grain Dry Harvest) yield of 5.6 – 6.2 t/ha.
