Abstract

Tailing from mining activity contains heavy metal that can be managed by phytoremediation. Plant selection to be used in phytoremediation plays important role that determine the success of these activities. The objective of this research is to study the growth of four forest tree species in media containing tailings from gold mining. Four fast growing tree species, i.e. Swietenia macrophylla King., Anthocephalus macrophyllus (Roxb.) Havil., Maesopsis eminii Engl., and Toona sureni (Blume) Merr., and two kinds of growing media, i.e. tailings and mixture of tailings + compost with 3:1 ratio, were used in a Completely Randomized Factorial Design. The growth parameters measured were plant height and diameter, leaf length and width, number of leaves, stomata density, total wet and dry biomass, also root-shoot ratio, and percentage of survival. The results of the research showed that plant types significantly affect all parameters observed. Media treatment had significant effect on total wet and dry biomass only. Interaction between plant types and media gave significant effect only on total wet biomass. Based on survival and growth parameter observed A. macrophyllus gave best performance.Key words: A. macrophyllus, M. eminii, phytoremediation, S. macrophylla, tailings, T. sureni

Abstract

Until now the raw material of wood especially Gelam (Melaleuca cajuputi) for supporting the construction of housing and other infrastructures is increasingly demand in Indonesia. On the Island of Borneo that partly consists of peat swamps needs Gelam very large and continuous, particularly for residential development. Ecological aspects are very important for supporting the silvicultural strategies. The aim of this study is to analyze ecological aspects which are very influence especially physical and chemical soil properties and microclimate as well. The utilization of study is to determine the silvicultural strategies for continuing production and conservation of Gelam in the future. The method was used a field survey around Gelam forest and did collecting samples and measuring there. The results showed in South Borneo the potency of Gelam is only 2,9-7,1 m3/ha and decreasing yearly. Normally Gelam with a diameter <4 cm have been cut down, as well as > 30 cm. Gelam can grow on the peat swamp forest where the soil was low pH 3.5-3.9. Most of pH of soil in these areas was influenced by phyrite (FeS2 of 0.4-2.2% and highest of Fe 90-302 ppm. C organic in the soil was included low-moderate 5.5-10.0%. Result of soil physic analysis showed composition of sand, dust, and clay of 9 : 54 : 57 % respectively. Temperature and humidity around peat swamp forest areas where was found Gelam were 31-33oC and 63-73% respectively. Most of areas around Gelam were grown Gelam Tikus (Syzygium inophylla) and some kind of shrubs.Key words: Gelam, potency, ecological aspects, silviculture

Abstract

Dayak Ngaju community used to manage the peat-land for agricultural purposes by the Handel system. The Handel System is a group farming activity in a spesific area along one small river. Land preparation is one of the important step in this system, and Dayak Ngaju community used to do it by fire. Land preparation by burning activity has been done since the very first generation of Dayak Ngaju. There are two important things in land preparation of Dayak Ngaju in Mantangai Village Kapuas Regency, Central Kalimantan, e.g 1) Rules and ritual tradition for land preparation, and 2) the techniques of land-preparation with burning activity. Burning activity should be well-supervised, and there will be a fine (jipen) given if the fire spread uncontrolable and burn the others land. The techniques for land preparation are still in traditional approach, from selected thinning, clearing, and burning activity. Recently there is no appropriate land preparation technology introduced yet, thus make Dayak Ngaju community still highly depend on using fire for their land preparation activity.Key words: handel, land preparation

Abstract

Natural disasters that occur in most areas of Indonesia would certainly give rise to a wide range of impacts on the physical, social, and economic life of the society. One of these natural disasters is landslides. KPH Lawu Ds is a owned company Perhutani, which produces pine resin. KPH area Lawu Ds are generally located in areas that have a steep slope has an area prone to landslides are quite extensive. Therefore, in carrying out forest cultivation of plants which are generally homogenous need additional types of vegetation can reduce the level of vulnerability to landslides. Landslides can also be regarded as a form of land use that have little or no attention to soil conservation techniques, but in this study only look from the vegetation in developing soil conservation techniques in homogeneous plantation forests in the forest management unit areas KPH Lawu Ds. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to obtain the right local plant species as the plant are prioritized and appropriate to prevent the occurrence of landslides and obtain the shape and pattern of cultivation. Data analysis using descriptive analysis of qualitative and models that fit the preferences of local preferences of plants grown on land prone to landslides in RPH Cepoko by using the method of AHP (Analytical Hierarchy Process). Alternatives are obtained based on the plants prioritized is clove, coffee, chocolate, calliandra, Leucaena leucocephala, durian, Swietenia macrophylla, Aleuriteus Moluccana, Paraserianthes falcataria, Pangium edule, Anacardium occidentale , and Sterculia foetida and cultivation techniques of forest vegetation on the sides of the plant adjusted based onsolum soil, slope and vegetation cover of pine with dense composition, middle and rare on research plots in the area of KPH Lawu Ds and planting distance is determined by the density of the canopy.Key words: mitigation, native plant species, preference, cultivation techniques.

Abstract

Soil Macrofauna has a very important role in maintaining soil fertility through the decomposition of organic matter, nutrient distribution, increasing soil aeration and so on. The existence of soil macrofauna are very important in helping the process of rehabilitation of post-mining land because they contribute to the improvement of the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soil. The purposes of this study are to identify and quantify the diversity of soil macrofauna in various types of stands and land without stand in Holcim Educational Forest. The highest abundance of soil macrofauna was found in mixed stand with 240 individuals in nine plots of observation, each plot was 40 cm x 40 cm. Layers of soil (0-10 cm) has an abundance of soil macrofauna higher than in the litter layer, because soil layer can provide protection from direct sunlight and enough food for soil macrofauna. Mixed stand has the highest soil macrofauna diversity (H '= 2.52, DMG = 6.93, J' = 0.63), as it has a more diverse vegetation and highest canopy density. Environmental conditions such as soil temperature, canopy density, and soil organic matter can influence the composition and abundance of soil macrofauna, so that the soil macrofauna can be used as an indicator in monitoring environmental quality. Soil macrofauna that dominates in all the stands and land without stand, were red ants (Formicidae 7), termites (Rhinotermitidae 1), earthworms (Megascolecidae 1), and larvae of Coleoptera (Scarabaeidae 1).Key words: abundance, diversity, environment, soil macrofauna

Abstract

The community forestry (HKm) is a government effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in climate change mitigation strategies and improvement of community welfare. The objective of this research was to analyze carbon economy contribution to the household income that was attained from carbon initiative activities in the HKm. This study was conducted in the community forestry in Ngeposari village, Gunung Kidul district, Special Region of Yogyakarta. The methods of the research were deep interview, observation and document analysis. Descriptive analysis and scoring technique were applied to understand the income structure of the farmer household and an additional incentive from carbon economy by using several assumptions. Based on the three assumptions, this study revealed that the low household-level received the highest benefits from carbon initiative activities. Total carbon income from 155 ha was estimated to be 295 321 IDR based on VCM scheme calculation, if it was compared to the community business plan which included timber harvesting.Key words: Community Forest, carbon initiative, livelihood
