Abstract

The Tabut Tradition is one of the religious rituals passed down through generations in Bengkulu. This tradition is performed to welcome the new year, lasting for 10 days, starting from the 1st of Muharram to the 10th of Muharram. The Tabut tradition is closely related to symbols and rituals that are interwoven. In this analysis, the Tabut tradition will be explored using the spatial theory perspective of Henri Lefebvre and the symbolic anthropology of Clifford Geertz. This research is qualitative, employing a descriptive method. The approach used is anthropological, also utilizing Lefebvre's spatial theory and Geertz's symbolic theory as analytical tools. The results of this research include, among others, how social space is formed and enlivened by Tabut rituals through Lefebvre's approach. Meanwhile, Geertz's symbolic theory will help explain the meanings of the symbols used in this tradition as cultural and religious expressions. This study is descriptive, qualitative, and analytical in nature, aimed at investigating the symbolic meanings and rituals found in the Tabut tradition in Bengkulu.

Abstract

In today’s African society, there is a sudden surge in interest in Indigenous African Spiritualities (IAS). This interest is mainly among the youth. This surge seems to come face to face with the Judeo-Christian tradition which has taken strong root in Africa. In some cases, the return to IAS seems to challenge the long-age accepted teachings and dogmas of the Judeo-Christian faith. This return to IAS is because of the feeling of the youth that the Judeo-Christian faith does not address some of their pressing needs like issues of insecurity, the question of theodicy, financial issues, etc. When they read through the scriptures of the Judeo-Christian tradition, they fail to see much connection between what these scriptures teach and the accepted beliefs of IAS. The paper argues for a connection between the teachings of the Jewish scriptures and IAS in one core aspect. It adopts a historical and cross-cultural methodology to come to the conclusion that the Azazel ritual of the Jewish Testament has a counterpart in the Osu caste system of the traditional Igbo religion. This is especially so in the propitiatory function of the two rituals.

Abstract

This article explores Jesus' high priestly identity within Christian theology, focusing on its significance in the Old Testament priesthood. The role of the high priest was central to the religious and cultural life of the ancient Jewish community, serving as an intermediary between God and the people. The theological and historical controversy about Jesus' position as high priest is one of the main issues discussed. The paper examines theological, historical and biblical data to explore this issue thoroughly. The research question is: What are the theological implications of Jesus' identity as the High Priest? The research method involves biblical exegesis, historical analysis, and theological reflection. The study clarifies the complex relationship between the role of Jesus and the conventional information about the high priest using the Old Testament image of the high priest and the Jewish religious framework and the New Testament depiction of Jesus in the context of the priesthood. The study also considers how Christian theology, which understands redemption, reconciliation, and mediation, might be affected by Jesus' eventual elevation to the rank of high priest. The research results reveal the profound implications of Jesus' identity as the High Priest regarding its continuity with the Old Testament priesthood and its transformative impact on the Christian understanding of salvation and redemption. In conclusion, this exploration of Jesus' high priestly identity promises to enrich our understanding of the depth and significance of Christ's redemptive work.

Abstract

The article attempts to articulate the process of contextualization of Catholic theology in Vietnam from the early period to the end of the twentieth century. Through the efforts of both missionaries and Vietnamese theologians, contextual theology was established and attained certain results in the effort to integrate the Christian faith into the Vietnamese cultural and religious contexts. To make Catholicism harmonious with and integrate it into Vietnamese cultural and religious backgrounds, Vietnamese theologians even went further by endeavoring to build a contextual theology known as “Viet-theology”. In so doing, Catholic theologians contributed to effectively spreading their faith among Vietnamese people. Moreover, they help to build up religious tolerance in the context of multi-religious traditions like Vietnam.

Abstract

Belief or spirituality in Indonesia used to be a practice embraced by some people. Today, it has evolved into a form of belief in God Almighty, which leads to the understanding that its adherents do not belong to a particular religious category. Post-reform, these believers, including those who adhere to Sapto Darmo, experience social pressure from society, which causes them to feel restricted in carrying out their worship. Nonetheless, Sapto Darmo believers have managed to overcome these obstacles, even though they are forced to follow the prevailing religious lessons in schools. This study aims to determine the condition of Sapto Darmo believers in Ponorogo after the decision of the Constitutional Court and to know the government's protection of the civil rights of spirituality. The researcher uses the Grounded Research method and the sociology of religion approach which aims to find out the condition of Sapto Darmo believers in Ponorogo after the Constitutional Court's decision and to find out the government in protecting the civil rights of believers.
