Abstract

This study aimed to find information about students’ internal problems in the academic speaking subject as well as students’ efforts to overcome the problems. The participants in this study were students who had passed the subject in the 2018 academic year in a private university in Bogor. This study was a qualitative research by using questionnaires and interviews as research instruments to explore information related to the two research questions: 1) what are the students’ internal problems in the academic speaking subject? and 2) what are the students' efforts to overcome the problems? This study discovered four kinds of internal problems, namely: the problems in expressing ideas, applying correct grammar patterns, speaking anxiety, and low motivation. This study also discovered students’ efforts to overcome the problems, including preparing the material to be discussed, practicing speaking up with friends, practicing pronouncing English words correctly, learning grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation from grammar books, dictionary, and English learning applications. The findings of this study are expected to be useful, not only for students to keep doing the efforts in improving their speaking skills, but also for teachers to support students’ efforts to overcome the internal problems in the academic speaking subject

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the application of the Problem-Based Learning model which was characterized by differences in student’s numeracy skills in the Surface Area and Volume of Flat Sided Spaces topic at SMP Negeri 4 Kuningan between the Problem-Based Learning model and the conventional model. This research is a static group pretest-posttest design. The sample in this study was class VIII F, totaling 25 students as the experimental class, and class VIII E, totaling 32 students as the control class. Data collection techniques used are subjective tests and questionnaires. Data analysis techniques in this study were hypothesis testing and student questionnaire responses. Based on the results of statistical testing, the increase in students’ numeracy skills is in the medium category. The percentage of student’s responses to Problem-Based Learning is 51.60%. This study concludes that the numeracy skills of the students using the Problem-Based Learning model are better than the numeracy abilities of the students using conventional learning models, the improvement of student’s numeracy skills is in the medium category, and more than half of the student’s respond well to the learning model, so it can be said that Problem-Based Learning is quite effective

Abstract

This study aims to determine the description of the ability of mathematical connections in terms of students' self-concept. Self-concept is used to determine the description mathematical connection abilities, where self-concept as an affective aspect plays an important role in the cognitive aspects of students. This research is descriptive qualitative research with 53 students of class VIII SMP Negeri 1 Kramatmulya as participants who were determined by purposive sampling. Participants were given a mathematical connection ability test and a self-concept questionnaire. Furthermore, interviews were conducted with several positive self-concept and negative self-concept participants who obtained the highest and lowest questionnaire scores from each self-concept. The data obtained was analyzed using analysis model Miles and Huberman which is divided into three stages, namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The results showed that students with positive self-concepts had all indicators of mathematical connection ability. Then students with negative self-concept are less able to use and master the indicators of mathematical connection ability. This is because most of the indicators of mathematical connection ability are still not mastered by students in solving the problems given
