Abstract

Orchids (Family Orchidaceae) are one of the components of biodiversity in ecosystems such as the epiphytic orchids of West Kalimantan which are endangered due to forest destruction. This research aims to found out the types of epiphytic orchids in the forest area of Bukit Luncit, Anjongan Sub-district. The research was carried out from May to July 2015 using the cruise method. Research finding showed that there were 9 genera of orchids divided into 12 species of epiphytic orchids i.e. Aerides odorata, Bulbophyllum lepidum, Bulbophyllum vaginatum, Cymbidium finlaysonianum, Dendrobium crumenatum, Dendrobium oblongum,Dendrobium smithianum, Luisia curtisii, Micropera fuscolutea, Pomatocalpa latifolia, Thrixspermum centipeda and Trichoglottis bipenicillata.

Abstract

The potential use of dragon scales have been used by people in Kalimantan as anti-inflammatory drugs, oral thrush and toothache. Dragon scales (D. Piloselloides) is one of epiphytic plants in association with other plants. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of the dichloromethane and n-hexane fraction of dragon scales against S. aureus and S. typhi. The research was conducted from October to December 2015 in the Pharmaceutical Chemistry Laboratory Faculty of Medicine, Wood Technology Laboratory Faculty of Forestry, Chemistry Laboratory and Biology Laboratory Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Tanjungpura University, Pontianak. Dichloromethane and n-hexane fraction were obtained from the fractionation of methanol extract. Furthermore, both fractions in TLC and chromatogram profiles were visualized using UV 254 and 336 nm. Antibacterial test of D. piloselloides fraction was done by paper disc diffusion method. The concentration used in this study was 0.25; 0.30 and 0.35 g/ml, and as a comparison, Ciprofloxasin 0.005 mg/ml used as a positive control. Antibacterial activity test of dichloromethane fraction of dragon scales has only the ability to inhibit S. aureus, whereas the n-hexane fraction has no antibacterial activity against S. aureus and S. typhi. TLC test results showed that the dichloromethane fraction contains flavonoids compounds, while the n-hexane fraction contains terpenoids compounds.

Abstract

The Order Anura are members of Amphibians that live in various types of habitats such as terrestrial, aquatic, arboreal and fossorial. This research aims to find out the species of the members of the Order Anura found in the area. Sampling was carried out in April 2015, using the visual encounter survey method combined with the line transect. The transects were made at 6 stations with different environmental settings. The species of the members of the Order Anura found in the wetland area around Sebedang Lake were as many as 10 speciesbelonging to 5 families, namely Dicroglossidae (Fejervarya cancrivora, F. limnocharis, Limnonectes ibonarum and L. paramacrodon), Ranidae (Hylarana erythraea, H. baramica and H. nicobariensis), Megophrydae (Leptobrachium abboti), Microhylidae (Kaloula pulchra) and Bufonidae (Duttaprhynusmelanostictus). Members of the Order Anura the most found in species L. limnocharis as many as 28 individuals and the lowest to a species L. paramacrodon such as 1 individual.

Abstract

The Ketapang leaf (Terminalia catappa) has allelochemical compounds which can inhibit the growth of other plants, so it has the potential to serve as a bioherbicide. This research aims to find out the concentration of the leaf extract of Ketapang (Terminalia catappa) that is capable of inhibiting the germination of Mimosa pudica seed. This research was carried out in the screen house of the Department of Biology, and the Chemistry Laboratory of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Tanjungpura University Pontianak from May to June 2015. The research used a completely randomized design with five replications. The treatments consisted of control (K0), concentration of the extract of T.catappa at 10% (K1), 25% (K2), 50% (K3), and 75% (K4) respectively. The results showed that the extract of T.catappa at concentration of 50% (0.50 g/ml) was capable of inhibiting the germination of M.pudica weed seed up to 100%.

Abstract

Gastrointestinal Nematode worms have serious impacts on infected birds and humans, among other causing anemia, digestive problems and decreased immunity. This research aims to find out the species and density of Nematode worms in the gastrointestinal tract of the muscovy duck (Cairina moschata) sold in Flamboyan Market Pontianak. Samples of worms were taken from January to March 2016. The number of samples observed was 90 muscovy ducks. The Nematode worms that found fixed with Formalgliserin (FG) solution. The identification was carried out in the Laboratory of Zoology at the Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Tanjungpura University Pontianak. 3 of 90 samples of muscovy duck were infected by gastrointestinal Nematodes. The research discovered two species of gastrointestinal Nematode worms i.e. Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinarum. A. galli had a density rate of 0.024 ind/ml and H. gallinarum at 1 ind/ml. The frequency of presence of H. gallinarum was lower (1,11%) and A. galli (2,22%).

Abstract

Bats is on of Order Chiroptera which have the highest species richness in tropical forests compared to other mammals. This research aims to identify the species of bats in the Area of Tanjung Datok Forest. Data were collected from September to October 2015. Bats were collected directly from three stations using the trappingmethodmist nets. As many as 3 pieces of mist nets were mounted at three points in each station. Theidentification was carried out in the Laboratory of Zoology Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences,Tanjungpura University Pontianak. The result showed that were 2 families and 4 species of bats found in the area of Tanjung Datok Forest. three species from family Pteropodidae Cynopterus brachiotis, Dycopterus spadiceus, and Penthetor lucasii, while one species from family Emballonuridae wasEmballonura electo.

Abstract

The mangrove forest is one of the natural resources of the coastal area that serves to control the increase of boundary between groundwater level and seawater level inland (intrusion), to be a buffer zone, and to protect the shoreline so as to avoid erosion or abrasion. The research aimed to find out the composition and types of mangrove forest vegetation in the area of Serukam River estuary, Bengkayang Regency This research was conducted from June to September 2015 . The location was determined using a purposive random samplingmethod. There were three sampling locations with three  transects in the mangrove forest of Serukam River estuary. There were six mangrove species found in the research, i.e. Sonneratia alba, Avicennia marina, Rhizophora mucronata, Bruguiera parviflora, R. stylosa, B. cylindrica. The highest density of trees and saplings was R. mucronata with a density of 113.3 Ind/Ha and The highest density of saplings was 32.73ind/ha. The highest density of seedlings was Bruguiera cylindrical, i.e. 16.66 ind/ha.
