Abstract

This thesis is focused on the investigation of the effect of applying animal cartoon pictures on students’ achievement in writing narrative text. This study aims to find whether applying animal cartoon pictures significantly affect the students’ writing achievement or not. The data in this study were obtained by administering a written test. The population was the 2015/2016 first year (grade XI) of SMA Swasta Nusantara Lubuk Pakam and 66 students were taken as the sample by using random sampling. The sample was divided into two groups, experimental and control groups. The experimental group was taught by applying animal cartoon pictures while the control group without animal cartoon pictures (x = lecturing). The data were taken the scores from the pre-test and post-test to both experimental and control groups. These data were analyzed by using t-test. The result of computing the t-test obviously showed that t-observed is higher than t-table (5.21 >1,67) with the degree of freedom 64 (df =N-2) at the level significance 0,05 one tail test. It showed that the application of animal cartoon pictures significantly affected the students of SMA Swasta Nusantara Lubuk Pakam achievement in writing narrative text.

Abstract

This research was aimed to develop the appropriate reading materials for the eleventh grade students of Information Technology Program of SMK Gajah Mada Medan. Due to the result in the form of a product, this study was categorized as Research and Development (R & D) study which adapted from Borg and Gall (1989) theory with some modifications. The subject of this study was the eleventh grade students of Information Technology Program of SMK Gajah Mada Medan. In conducting this research, the procedures were gathering the data and information, conducting the need analysis, designing the first draft of materials, validating by the experts, revising the materials, and producing the final product. The instruments of collecting data were the combination of two strategies; interview and questionnaires. The interview result was analyzed as qualitative data and the questionnaires analyzed as quantitative data. These data were needs of students covering target needs and learning needs. This study developed reading materials which only focused on procedure text taught in the even semester. These materials were based on Curriculum 2013.

Abstract

The purpose of conducting this research was find out whether the most dominantlearning style in reading comprehension and to find out which is the fasteststudents‟ learning style in reading comprehension at the tenth grade students atSMA SWASTA Teladan Medan Tembung in academic year 2016/2017. Therewere 239 students from 5 classes as the subject of this research. In this case, theresearcher collected the data by using learning style questionnaire andobservation. The result showed that auditory learning style is the most dominantlearning style at the tenth grade students at SMA SWASTA Teladan Medan, thepercentage was 52.30%, it means 125 from 239 students prefer to hear than readand move. The second was visual learning style, score 30.54% , means tha 73from 239 students prefer to read. Then, kinaesthetic learning style, the sore,17.15%, means that only 41 students prefer to move. For the fastest student‟s inreading comprehension came from visual students or visual learners. They getscore 55%, followed auditory 40%, and kinaesthetic 5%.

Abstract

This study deals with the effect of watch think talk strategy on students’ speaking achievement. The objective of this study is to find out whether the watch think talk strategy significantly affects students achievement in speaking. It was an experimental research. The subject of the study was students of the grade XI of MAN 1 Medan. The sample was divided into two groups. The experimental group was taught by applying Watch Think Talk Strategy, while the control group was taught by applying conventional strategy. The instrument for collecting the data was interview test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The analysis showed that t-observed value 8.5 > t-table value 1.9 at α = 0.05 with dF= 78 the findings indicate that applying watch think talk strategy significantly affected students’ speaking achievement. Therefore, the null hyphothesis (Ho) is rejected and the hypothesis alternative (Ha) is accepted.

Abstract

This is an attempt to discover the effect of applying Sentence Combining Technique on Students’ Achievement in Writing Recount Text. It was conducted by using experimental research. The population of this research was the eighth (VIII) grade students of SMP Budi Satrya which consists of five parallel classes with the total number of sampling through lottery technique. The result was class VIII-1 consisted of 30 students became the experimental group and class VIII-3 consisted of 30 students became the control group. The experimental group was taught by using Sentence Combining Technique while the control group was taught by using Picture Word Inductive Model. The instrument for collecting the data was writing test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The result shows that the value of t-observed (2.75) is higher than the value of t-table (2.004) ( α = 0.05 ) with the degree of freedom (df) = 58. It means that there is a significant effect of applying Sentence Combining Technique on the students’ achievement in writing Recount texts. So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted.

Abstract

This study concerns on how reading text material are developed for vocational school. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) design through six phases; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing new materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product. The subject of this research was class XI SMK N 10 Medan consisting of 22 students. Instrumentations for collecting data were questionnaire and interview. After analyzing the data, the researcher got the students’ need in learning English in term of vocation that they have. The data were gathered by administering interview and distributing questionnaire to 25 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students need English reading materials which contain English for cosmetology major. Thus, developing materials were procedure text. The developed teaching material were related to the vocation that the students had; it was beauty major. The products have been validated by experts. The average scores are 4,25 from English subject teacher and 4,17 English lecturer. It means the developing materials categorized as relevant or appropriate for students of beauty major grade XI.

Abstract

This study deals with The Effect of Mind Mapping Technique on Students’ Achievement in Writing Narrative Text at SMAN 4 Medan. The objective of this study was to find out if there was a significant effect of mind mapping technique on students’ achievement in writing narrative text. It was conducted by using experimental research. The population of this study was the eleventh grade students of SMAN 4 Medan which consists of six parallel classes. Two classes were taken as the sample of the research, XI-1 IPA and XI-5 IPA. The class XI-1 IPA was an experimental group and class XI-5 IPA was a control group. The experimental group was taught by Mind Mapping Technique, otherwise the control group was taught by using lecturing technique or without used Mind Mapping Technique. The instrument for collecting the data was writing test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. It was found that t-observed (5.63) higher than t-table (2.00). It means that there was a significant effect on students’ achievement in writing narrative text at SMAN 4 Medan by using mind mapping technique.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze and describe the readability of reading texts in atextbook entitled Talk Active 2 for the Eleventh Grade Senior High School. Thisresearch concerned on measuring six reading texts in the textbook which wereselected by using random sampling. The measurements used in this research wereFlesch Reading Ease Formula and Cloze Test. The test was distributed to the 40eleventh grade students at SMA Swasta Galih Agung. Furthermore, the writerused descriptive method. From the analysis by using Flesch Reading EaseFormula, it was found that 3 of 6 texts are readable for the eleventh gradestudents. The three texts are the third text Emperor Penguin (57.06), fifth textShould Parents Censor Their Children’s Reading Material? (63.59) and sixth textDewi Sartika (53.47). But, only the third text and sixth text are appropriate for theeleventh grade students because the scores are between 50 to 60 (Fairly Difficult)which estimated for 10th-12th grade. The average readability score of the six textsby using Flesch Reading Ease Formula is 51.35 (Fairly Difficult) which isappropriate for 10th-12th grade. Moreover, the results by using cloze test showedthat text 6 has score 78.80% (Independent Level) which is predicted to be quiteeasy and the students can read the text independently. Meanwhile, text 1 to 5 havescore between 40% to 60% (Instructional Level). The average score of six texts is59.7% (Instructional Level) which predicted to be appropriate difficulty and it canbe concluded that the reading texts are appropriate for the eleventh grade studentsand the students need teacher’s assistance to comprehend the texts.

Abstract

This study was intended to find out the effect of applying 3H (Here, Hidden, and in my Head) Strategy on students’ reading comprehension in narrative text. It was conducted by using experimental research design. The population of this study was the second year students of SMP Al Hidayah Medan. The sample of this research was two classes which consisted of experimental and control group which were chosen by using clustering technique. There were thirty students which were taken as the sample in each class. The experimental group was taught by 3H (Here, Hidden, and in my Head) Strategy while control group was taught without 3H (Here, Hidden, and in my Head) Strategy. The instrument of collecting the data was multiple choice test which consists of 20 items. To obtain the reliability of the test, the researcher used Kuder Richardson (KR 20) formula. The calculation showed that the reliability is 0.84 (very high). The data were analyzed by using t-test. The calculation showed that t-observed (5.2) was higher than t-table (2.00) at the level of significance (ơ) 0.05 with degree of freedom (df) 58. The result of this study showed that 3H (Here, Hidden, and in my Head) Strategy was significantly affect on students’ reading comprehension achievement.

Abstract

This study is aimed to develop English reading materials for vocational school.This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D). Thesubject of this research was Grade X students of Light Vehicle EngineeringDepartment of SMK YPT Pangkalan Brandan consisting of 22 students. The dataconsist of syllabus, lesson plan, syllabus and existing materials. Instrument ofcollecting data were questionnaires and interview which were used to collectinformation about students’ needs and learning needs. The need analysis showedthat 81.8 % of students had difficult to understanding English reading text becausethe text is not relevant, difficult to understand the structure of word and sentencesin reading text and difficult to conclude the reading text. The evaluation ofexisting reading materials showed that the existing reading materials are notintended for students of Light Vehicle Engineering Department. The existingreading materials are intended for all vocational students. After the students’ needand reading materials had been analyzed, the new reading material was developedthat considering the students’ need and the relevant with vehicle. The genre of thereading texts which were developed is descriptive text. Based on basiccompetence, kinds of descriptive text which developed are describing people,tourism place, and historical building. The product of this study consists of fivechapters which titles are Soichiro Honda, Museum Angkut, Coventry TransportMuseum, TMII Transport Museum, and Cadillac Ranch. The product wasvalidated by an English teacher and an English lecturer with the mean score is 4.1from 5. The product is categorized as “Good and Relevant” reading materials.
