Abstract

Repeh (Mangifera gedebe Miq.) is one of lesser known species that does not utilize optimally yet because of lacking data of this wood species. Repeh wood has been used by rural people in East Kalimantan traditionally as housing material such as wall. The purpose of this research is to determine the fresh moisture content, density and static bending strength of Repeh based on DIN standard. Four logs of Repeh taken from Kutai Kartanegara District as sample and divided into three parts. The data was display by graphic. The result showed that the average of fresh moisture content and density are 102,21% and 0,46 g/cm, whereas MOE is 7428 N/mm and MOR is 51,2 N/mm. According to MOE and MOR, Repeh including to Wood Strength Class IV III and it could be as light construction material and furniture. Abstract

The aim of this research was to evaluate the activity of liquid smoke from empty fruit stalks of oil palm to the Schizophyllum commune Fries fungus. Research was conducted in several steps, i.e. pyrolisis of liquid smoke and efficacy test of liquid smoke as antifungal. Agar media used was PDA (potatoes dextrose agar). Concentration of liquid smoke used for the treatment were 0; 0.25%; 0.50%; 0.75%; 1.00%; 1.25%; and 1.50% (v/v). The results indicated that the liquid smoke inhibited the Schizophyllum commune fungi growth. Concentration of liquid smoke resulted in significantly different antifungal activities. Liquid smoke with a concentration of 1% resulted in an average value of antifungal activity of 95.12%. The contents of organic fractions of liquid smoke, such as acid and phenol might be responsible for these antifungal activities. Abstract

A fundamental study was carried out to explore the properties of pandan mengkuang stem (Pandanus atrocarpus Griff). In this study chemical compound was investigated, with regards to pulp and paper production. Completely randomized design was used and as a factor was plant age. The result showed that the level of plant age, had significantly affected to the content of holocellulose, ?-cellulose, pentosan and 1% NaOH solubility. The percentage of extractive content, lignin, holocellulose, ?-cellulose, pentosan, ash content and 1% NaOH solubility were 2.83% ~ 3.71 %; 23.08% ~ 23.88%; 66.8% ~ 68.21%; 38.08% ~ 39.06%; 20.68% ~ 21.14%; 2.7% ~ 3.18%; 24.47% ~ 27.19% respectively. The overall results showed that pandan mengkuang has a promising potential to be used in pulp and paper production. Abstract

Wood drying is a process to remove water from the wood to stabilize the dimension. The research was to determine the level of dimension stability of wood in dependence of drying temperature and type of wood (Tectona grandis L.f and Paraserianthes falcataria L) for temperature drying there are three standard treatments: 50C, 70C and 90C. The parameter measured in this research is the dimensional stability of wood. Results show that the type of wood has a strong effect on stability dimension, while the dryng temperature and the interaction of both factors had no effect. Paraserianthes falcataria L wood best indicates the level of dimensional stability, with a mean value of depreciation ratio T/R of 0.99. The dimensional stability of Tectona grandis L.f, had a mean value of T/R 1.64 for T/R . Average wood density values in this study for Tectona grandis L.f was 0,65 g/cm3 and Paraserianthes falcataria L 0.42 g/cm3. The same type of wood from outside of West Kalimantan had a density equal the value of 0.67 g/cm3 and 0.33 g/cm3. Abstract

A study on the influence of of SP 36 dosage on jelutung (D.lowii Hook) seeds with mycorrhizal inoculation in the peat soils was conducted in a greenhouse Soil Science Laboratory Faculty of Agriculture, is Gadjah Mada University for 5 months in 2010. Research purpose was to determine was the dosage of fertilizer SP 36 can enhance the growth of jelutung seedlings inoculated with arbuskular mycorrhizal fungi. Nursery experiments were conducted using Completely Randomized Factorial Design with three replications. Observations made on jelutung seedlings 14 weeks of age after weaning include: height, diameter, number of leaves, shoot dry weight, and P uptake of plants after harvest. Abstract

Coptotermes sp. is the most important genus of termites in buildings and plantations. In recent years, methods to combat termite infestation by using chemicals have caused serious hazards to humans and environment. The utilization of liquid smoke as the bio-termiticide to combat termite infestation is one of the appropriate and interesting technologies to develop. The aims of this research are: (1) to produce liquid smoke made from waste of empty fruit branch of oil palm by applying a condensation process, (2) to determine the optimum temperature of the production of liquid smoke, (3) to identify the component of liquid smoke, (4) to evaluate the bio-activity of liquid smoke as bio-termiticide on termites in the laboratorium. Liquid smoke was produced under various temperatures 350, 400, 450 C for 90 minutes. Phenol and acid analysis the components of liquid smoke were qualitatively analysed by using a gas chromatography mass spectrometer/GCMS. Evaluation of liquid smoke on subterranean termite was done according to Ohmura (1997) procedure under various concentration of 1%, 2%, 3%, dan 4%. Identification of the component of liquid smoke showed that mostly phenols and acetic acids were present in all temperature of pyrolisis. Content of phenols and acids were increasing with higher temperatures. The highest mortality of termite after 3 (three) weeks observation was recorded using liquid smoke produced at a temperature of 450 C, followed by 400C, 350C and the control, respectively. The highest weight loss of the paper disc was observed with the control with a weight loss of 100%, followed by 350C, 400C, dan 450C, respectively.
