Abstract

A study on the spoilage of dried cassava by Aspergillus flavus was still limited so that such study is very important to do. This experiment was done to examine the effect of relative humidity (RH) and storage room temperature on the development of A. flavus and dried cassava spoilage during storage time. Based on the population of A. flavus, starch content, reduction sugar content, and water content of dried cassava, it was concluded that RH 65%, the temperature of 30 and 35oC had better storage condition for dried cassava because it resulted in the lowest population of A. flavus and the lowest deterioration of dried cassava.

Abstract

Dried cassava is a suitable host for the growth and development of the genus Aspergillus. Fungi reported to grow on dried cassava were A. clavatus, A. flavus, A. foetidus, A. fumigatus, A. niger, A. ochraceus, A. oryzae, A. tamarii, A. zonatus, dan Aspergillus sp. From those species, A. flavus is the most important species because of its toxigenic characteristic on agricultural product. This study was conducted to study dominant species of Aspergillus causing the most severe deterioration on stored dried cassava and causing the highest deterioration in dried cassava. The isolates were then cultured for determination of dominant species. The in vitro experiment was to obtain the species of Aspergillus that is resulted in highest change of dried cassava spoilage. Based on relative index frequency (Rif) and presence index of the fungus (Pif), A. flavus was the most dominant species and causing the highest deterioration on the dried cassava.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of liquid smoke from Laban wood for controlling fungi that cause damping off on pine seeds and to determine the optimal concentration and temperature of pyrolysis of liquid smoke from Laban wood. The experiment was conducted at the Laboratory of Wood Technology, Faculty of Forestry, University of Tanjungpura Pontianak. Mucor sp is the species of fungi which used to in vitro test to determine the inhibition value. Research using RAL Factorial methods with two treatment factors, first treatment factor is the concentration of liquid smoke from Laban wood with 5 levels i.e. 0%, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10%. The second treatment  factor  is the temperature of the pyrolysis liquid smoke of Laban wood with 3 levels i.e. 350ºC, 400ºC and 450ºC.  Five replicates are conducted for all treatments. Tests carried out using a PDA medium mixed with liquid smoke from Laban wood with each concentration. Results of research  showed that the concentration of liquid smoke from Laban wood is very significant effect on the inhibition of the growth of the fungus Mucor sp. Meanwhile the pyrolysis temperature and the interaction of liquid smoke from Laban wood had no significant effect. Liquid smoke from Laban wood at a concentration of 10% with a pyrolysis temperature of 400°C is the best treatment because it can inhibited the growth of fungal Mucor sp. with the highest value (96.33%). This antifungal activity rate fulfills the very strong category inhibition. Liquid smoke from Laban wood can be used as biopesticide to overcome damping off fungi on Pine seed. Abstract

The development of plantations frequently faces technical obstacles, such as the the threat of insect pests. Therefore, pest control is very essential to support the success of development. The investigation is aimed to identify and toget the types of insects that have potential as pests and the level of damage to red timber seed (Shorea Lepsrosula Mig). The study was conducted for 3 months, starting from August to October in the seedbed of PT. Sari Bumi Kusuma, West Kalimantan. The research was conducted through survey on bedside observation. The determination of the beds was employed by purposive sampling i.e the first bed was +6 months old, the second bed was +11 months old, the third bed was +4 months and the fourth bed was +10 months old. The total number of plants observed was 1957 plants. The identification resulted in types of insect pests; 2 orders consisting of 5 families and 5 types of pest insects namely Gryllus mitratus (Cricket), Valanga nigricornis (Grasshoper), Lymantria marginalis (Caterpillar), Spodoptera litura (Taro caterpillar), Pteroma plagiophlps (Bagworm). The symptoms of pest-attacked plants are hollowed leaves, bite marks ranging from the leaf edge to the leaf bone and there is a truncated stem part of the plant. The percentage of plants affected by pest attacks ranged between 10.19% - 56.15% with the average percentage of 23.93% for crop damage categorized as light. The average damage rate ranged from 4.44% to 27.12%. The average rate of crop damage was 10.95% categorized as light damage. Although the level of damage is considered mild but controlling and handling efforts need to be performed in the form of pest eradication that is both mechanically and chemically conducted. Keywords: Morphology Identification, Pest insect, Seeding, Shorea leprosula

Abstract

The objective of research was to evaluation the effect of application of liquid smoke from Vitex pubescens Vahl wood to rubber wood to inhibit the subterranean termites Coptotermes curvignathus Holmgren attack and to determine the level of concentration and optimum pyrolysis temperature of liquid smoke from Vitex pubescens Vahl wood to rubber wood to inhibit subterranean termites Coptotermes curvignathus Holmgren attack. The parameter of research was retention of liquid smoke to wood, termite mortality and weight loss rubber wood. The results showed that the highest retention of liquid smoke found at a concentration of 15% with a pyrolysis temperature of 400oC i.e. 0.0245 g/cm3. Mortality of termites in concentration of liquid smoke 10% with a pyrolisis temperature of 400oC resulted the highest mortality, i.e. 100% while the lowest weight loss of rubber wood was achieve on concentration of liquid smoke 15% with a pyrolysis temperature of 450oC i.e. 18.69%. Abstract

Rubber farming has been in demand by the people of Laja Village since 1990's as a livelihood by utilizing shifting fields within the forest. Some people's income from the results of rubber farming is very large, especially during the dry season, where people tap into rubber sap every day. Rubber prices experienced a decline that was felt by rubber farmers and in the rainy season the people could not tap rubber sap, the people were forced to find alternative jobs, such as gold mining and other jobs. This situation certainly raises different perceptions of society. This study aims to determine the public perception of rubber farming and analyze the relationship between knowledge, income and cosmopolitan factors. This study uses descriptive and associative surveys with interview techniques and the questionnaire contains a number of questions posed to respondents, collecting data using random purposive sampling. Data analysis using descriptive analysis of the chi square test and inferential analysis using the non-parametric statistical test of the Kendall Tau correlation. The number of respondents in the study were 72 people. The results of this study indicate that public perceptions tend to be positive, moderate level of knowledge, low income level, high cosmopolitan level. There is a positive and significant relationship between the level of knowledge and perception, and there is no significant and no relationship between income levels and cosmopolitan with community perceptions. Keywords: Local community Perception, Rubber Farmers
