Abstract

This research is aimed to know the types and functions of code-switching that used by an English teacher at MAN 1 Pidie. The approach of this research was qualitative method. The data were gathered from direct and indirect observation of the English teaching process in the classroom. The writer used Jendra’s (2013) theory to analyze the types of code switching and Mattson and Burenhult’s (1999) theory to analyze the functions of code switching of the selected data. The findings of this research showed that the teacher used all three types of code switching in teaching English process which includes tag code-switching, inter-sentential code-switching and intra-sentential code-switching. Based on occurrence frequency tag code-switching was the most-used type, while inter-sentential code-switching was the least. The writer also found all three functions of code-switching those are topic switch function, affective function and repetitive function. In this research, topic switch function tend to be used more frequently among others function which makes it the highest percentage.

Abstract

This research is a pragmatic study which aims to find out the maxim flouting committed by the characters in Avengers: Infinity War movie and to describe its maxim flouting strategies. This research was conducted by using qualitative method. The data were collected by watching the movie and reading its transcript. Then they were analysed and classified based on the type of maxim flouting by Grice’s (1975) Cooperative Principles theory and Cutting (2002) Grundy’s (2000) modified theories of maxim flouting strategies. The results of this research show that the characters in the movie committed to flout all four types of Gricean maxims, which includes quantity, quality, relevance, and manner. Based on the occurrence frequency, flouting maxim of quantity was the most-flouted, while flouting maxim of manner was the least. Meanwhile, they also used all ten kinds of strategies to flout the maxims, including, overstatement, understatement, metaphor, irony, banter, sarcasm, irrelevant statement, ambiguous statement, tautology, and rhetorical question. In this movie, the characters tend to use overstatement very frequently among other strategies which makes it the highest use percentage.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating the types of slang and finding out the functions of the slang used in the “Deadpool” movie. A descriptive qualitative research was used with the document analysis design. In this research the researcher used the theory of Allan and Burridge (2006) in identifying the types of slang and classifying its functions. The result of this research showed that there were 5 types of slang used in the “Deadpool” movie. They were fresh and creative, flippant, imitative, acronym and clipping. The type of imitative dominates the type of slang words used in the Deadpool movie. While regarding the functions of slang, it was found 7 functions of slang in this movie. They were to address, to humiliate, to initiate relax conversation, to form intimate atmosphere, to express impression, to reveal anger and to show intimacy. The function of slang which has the highest frequency discovered in this movie is to humiliate. In conclusion, slang is a common word used in spoken language. We need to understand them in order not to get misunderstanding.

Abstract

This study aimed at finding out whether there is any improvement of students’ vocabulary mastery after being taught by vocabulary using Total Physical Response (TPR) in SD Swasta Pertiwi Sabang. This experimental research was conducted by giving the students a pretest before the treatments and a posttest after the treatments. The population of this research was the whole students at SD Swasta Pertiwi Sabang there are 75 students. The samples of this study were the students from fourth grade students which were chosen by using random sampling consist of 23 students. Total Physical Response can be used to teach vocabulary in Elementary School. The result revealed that there was a significant improvement of students’ vocabulary mastery after being taught by using Total Physical Response. The mean score from the pretest increase 53.81 points and in the posttest are 81.74. The t-test value was also found higher than the t-table (ts= 13.777 tt= 2.080). It means the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted whereas the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected.

Abstract

This study aims at analyzing the way the teacher develops students speaking performance by using storytelling technique and observing the steps used by the teacher in teaching English. The researcher applied qualitative study by observing classroom teaching practice and interviewing an English teacher at SMKN 1 Banda Aceh. The results of the observations and interview are consistent with the storytelling procedure proposed by Jianing (2007), which are formulated and ordered as deciding the material, dividing students into some groups, assessing the students’ performance and providing them with some feedback at the end of the meeting. The teacher perceived that using storytelling technique in teaching speaking make students to gain more interest in the English classroom because she used storytelling techniques in teaching legend topic. Furthermore, through interview it was revealed that storytelling was believed to have increased student’s vocabulary, confidence and a sense of pleasure in learning English.
