Abstract

During the course of the New Order in Indonesia, communism and Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) as its manifestation was constructed as the nemesis of the state and even the whole nation. Communism became a taboo that everyone has to avoid or condemn. With the fall of the New Order, a lot of historical discourses about communism in Indonesia were produced to contend the official historiography. Formal discrimination through several laws and regulations against ex-PKI or allegedly communists was also stripped by the new government. However, the taboo and abjection itself is not entirely died out. In post-Reformasi Indonesia, the mechanism of rejection and condemnation to the communism has been working through many social processes. One of them is the censorship towards ‘leftist publications’ and persecutions towards public forums discussing ‘leftist discourses’, usually orchestrated by non-state actors, particularly civil or mass organizations. This article, using ethnography as its method and Foucauldian analysis of governmentality as theoretical framework, aims to discuss how such censorships and persecutions occur as a symptom of the ongoing abjection towards communism in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

The technology of plastic surgery has been beneficial to mankind around the world. Plastic surgery can help people to retain and regain the function on some part of the body that was damaged. However, plastic surgery came with a handful of ethical issues. With the ability to alter one’s own body, many women sought to use this technology to beautify themselves. This part of technology then later was named as cosmetic surgery. By the reasoning of self-autonomy and free will, a person can easily alter their own physique according to their own will. This paper aimed to analyze this phenomenon based on philosophical thoughts regarding aesthetic purpose where it argued that beauty is a construction of media and society, not a construction that came from within one’s self. This paper argued that cosmetic surgery technology preyed upon women and instead of firming the position of self-autonomy and free will; it degrades women as a human of free will. The over-application of technology will only objectify women and it poses a danger as it can be used as a tool to satisfy certain interests

Abstract

This study examines the symbolic representations of cultural meanings behind the traditional wedding procession in West Sumatra. This study is a descriptive qualitative study whose data were collected by literature study. The collected data were analyzed using a descriptive approach based on Roland Barthes’s theory of semiotics which includes the discussion on denotative and connotative meaning as well as myth. The results of the analysis were presented in the form of a description of Roland Barthes's semiotic symbols. By examining the marriage procession, there are two interesting topics that can be studied further more. Firstly, the wedding procession itself. Secondly, the variety of materials and objects which are used when performing the traditional wedding procession.
