Abstract

The aim of this article is to know the implementation of Project-based learning. One of requirements that is needed to be achieved by English learner is to be able to speak in a target language. Nevertheless, even the students have already learnt English since in the elementary school, it cannot grant them to speak fluently. It is because, the teaching learning process emphasizes reading skill rather than speaking. As a result, students are not accustomed to speak in a target language. They never practice and correct their mistake. Since there is no mistake corrected, they will never realize which parts of their utterance that must be fixed. Therefore, this issue needs to be concerned. The students need to be trained to speak in a target language thus they can communicate both written and oral using a proper English. One of possible methods that can be used by the teacher is Project-based Learning. Project-Based learning refers to a model that organizes learning around project. The students are required to create a project which will be demonstrated at the end of the lesson. This research used qualitative design. This study was conducted in classroom. The subject of this study was a teacher of senior high school in a big city. The data were collected through observation by using field note. After the data were collected, they were analyzed through three steps which are transcribing, categorizing, and interpreting. The result of this study showed that there are six steps of implementation of Project-based learning namely giving essential question, designing a plan for a project, creating a schedule, monitoring the students and progress of the project, assessing the outcome, and culminating in the evaluating experience.

Abstract

Students can do some ways to help them in the learning process in English class. One of them is summarizing from both lectures or books. This research focuses on the book summarization written by EFL students. Summarizing may help the students to comprehend the materials from the sourcebook.  Therefore, this research aimed to identify the type of summaries used by EFL undergraduate students and to describe their responses toward summary writing. This study was conducted in a university in Surabaya. The researcher used two instruments to collect the needed data which were the Type of Summaries rubric proposed by Horney (2009), and the second is focus group discussion. After getting the data, the results were analyzed qualitatively by occupying the three stages; familiarizing & organizing, coding & reducing, and interpreting & representing. The results showed that type of summaries used by the students were copy one sentence, copy multiple sentences, own words, and combination type. Moreover, it is also found that the students had difficulties in the process of summarizing. In conclusion, it is proven that students still plagiarized when summarizing from the source book and, they did not know how to summarize effectively. The implications of these findings are considered for academic individual to explore their students with summarizing and paraphrasing strategies.

Abstract

In teaching-learning process, the teacher is required mastering not merely the subject knowledge but also the pedagogical knowledge. In dealing with feedback, the issue is the teacher deal with the effective and efficient action in fulfilling their roles as a teacher. To accomplish effective and efficient feedback, the teacher needs to create a right decision with a time restriction. Griffith, et al. (2013) proposed that the basic teaching skill is decision-making and every teaching act in class is the result of decisions. However, the teacher faces the time restriction in deciding the right feedback for their students. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to seek and describe the teacher's decision-making in implementing feedback. This research was designed as a qualitative research. The subjects of this research were four English teachers in senior high school. The semi structured interview was applied to get the data. Then, the results were analyzed and interpreted in the form of narrative and descriptive form. The findings have shown that the teacher's consideration in applying feedback is student's need, student's condition and teacher's belief. The teacher applied the decision-making rational and intuition. Keywords: teacher, decision-making, feedback.

Abstract

Within the fields of education, the emergence of technology and social media has brought innovation and one of these is language. In real life, students rely not only on academic and social-life digital devices such as computers, ipads, and smartphones, but also on social media. It is presumed that the implementation of social networking sites (SNS) such as the Instagram app into the classroom would have several beneficial impacts on students, especially in the English writing class. Most students claim that writing, because of its complexity, is the most challenging skill to master. Therefore, this study aims to find out Instagram's impact on the eighth grade students in their writing efficiency. This analysis had been planned by quantitative research. Applying non-randomized sampling, this study involved two groups that were; the category of experiments and controls. There were 37 experimental group students in participation, meanwhile 27 control group students were involved. During the treament, the researcher used Instagram as a medium in writing tasks, while the control group was being taught conventionally. The research instruments were paper-based test and writing rubric assessment. The data was derived from the analyses of pre-test and post-test. Therefore the researcher used T-test calculation to calculate the results. As a result, the post-test based on paper revealed that the experimental group had a mean score of 76; while the control group was 76.74 higher. On the other hand, post-test significance level (p-value) was below 0.05, resulted in 0.000. In short, it can be presumed that Instagram can affect the writing quality of the students. Keywords: Instagram, writing skills, writing quality.

Therefore, designing English material is needed to fulfill the needs, interests and demands of students, especially for multimedia students. This study was conducted to find out what material should be included for Multimedia major and to describe how English material for multimedia majors was developed. This research was used the Research and Development method adapting the procedure suggested by Gall and Borg (2003). The results of this study showed that the materials that must be included for multimedia major are materials related to technology and multimedia. Then, activities that must be provided are reading and speaking in English; audio/video related to multimedia; and discussion for teaching technique. Based on the teacher's opinions on the developed material, several components such as language, content, and graphics as well as the material categorized as appropriate materials since it based on the multimedia students' needs.

Abstract

Lecturers or teachers can find students who made speech errors easily on the students’speaking performance. One of the way to help the students reduced their speech errors is through oral feedback. This study was conducted to find out how does the lecture provided oral feedback to each type of speech errors that the students made. The subject of this study was the lecture which gave oral feedback to the sophomore college students in academic speaking class. The researcher used observation as the data collection technique. The result from this study showed that The lecture used descriptive feedback, evaluative feedback and corrective feedback as the main feedback for the seven types of speech errors. Each type of speech errors that the students made gets their specific oral feedback from the lecture. Each type of feedbacks that the lecture did have their own purpose of helping the students to reduce their speech errors.

Abstract

Teaching vocabulary is demanding in the context of English as a foreign language (EFL). EFL learners often forget words easily due to a lack of target language input, and most words are learned through classroom instruction, which often leads to boredom. Thus, such works suggest the urge for a more effective approach to vocabulary teaching for EFL learners. This study explores the use of MALL application; Duolingo to enhance student’s knowledge and interest in learning English vocabulary through mobile technologies. Quasi-experimental study was tested to seventh-grader with two group sample experimental and control that each group consist of 17 students. The research instruments used was a test that collected from pre-test and post-test score. Then, the data were analyzed using t-test calculation of SPSS 20 to identify its vocabulary improvement from each group. The results indicate a positive as the calculation of significance level (p-value) from experimental post-test scores is .000. It is lower than .05, which means there is a significant difference in experimental group after given a treatment. In addition, the experimental group got a higher average score of the post-test which is 87.94 than the control group which is 75.52. In conclusion, Duolingo can be believed to be a gamified language learning app that can develop vocabulary skills of the seventh grade.
