Abstract

Abstract The study aimed to know whether Prodigy, an English digital learning media, has significant effect towards junior high school students’ grammar competence. Prodigy is a digital learning application which has just launched its English learning feature in 2022. Design of the study was quantitative with experimental research method. Subject of the study were the eighth graders of junior high school. There were two classes, in which each class had 35 students. The first class was the experimental group and the second class was the control group. The study was conducted in a public junior high school in East Java. Data of the study was gathered using instruments, Pre-Test and Post-Test. The result of the study showed that the implementation of Prodigy as a digital English learning media has significant effect towards students’ grammar competence. The researcher analysed the pre-test score. It showed that there is no significant difference between students of both classes and they had equal ability in grammar competence. Furthermore, in order to know the significant difference towards students’ grammar competence after the implementation of Prodigy, a treatment was given to the experimental group. The treatment was conducted in five meetings. Students played Prodigy with the guidance of the researcher. After the treatment was completed, post-test was administered to both groups. Ultimately, post-test score was analysed. Based on the non-parametric guide, the result was considered to be statistically significant. In conclusion, Prodigy, as an English digital learning media, was able to help students to improve students’ grammar competence, especially present and past tense. Abstract

This quantitative study with pre-experimental design examines the differences in vocabulary mastery between students taught using Linga app and those taught without it. 36 senior high school students in 11th grade who receive additional English subject (Bahasa Inggris lintas minat) served as the participants of this experiment. Students' vocabulary mastery was tested using the vocabulary level test developed by Paul Nation and then updated by Webb et al. in 2017. To analyze the tests result, paired sample t-test was administered to find out the difference between the data. The results of the experiment indicate a significant difference in students' vocabulary mastery. This is proven by the result of the paired sample t-test with p-value <.001, it means that the difference between the pretest and posttest scores is statistically significant. Besides the paired sample t-test result, effects size calculation using Cohen's d revealed a moderate effect value for the group, with Cohen's d value of 0.822. In order to gain deeper insights of participants' experience, a post-experimental quantitative questionnaire consisting of 10 Likert scale items was administered. The result of the post-experiment questionnaire revealed that participants responded positively to the vocabulary learning application, indicating it was effective and user-friendly. The majority of participant expressed high levels of satisfaction with the app's features, particularly those supporting pronunciation, contextual word learning, and vocabulary training. Despite these findings, as there is currently limited prior research regarding the use of Linga app in English language learning, future studies are encouraged to expand on these findings with larger subjects or different language skills other than vocabulary.

Abstract

This study explores English teachers’ perceptions and lived experiences in utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools at SMPN 1 Mojowarno, a rural junior high school in Jombang. Guided by Max van Manen’s hermeneutic phenomenology and the TPACK framework, this study used semi-structured interviews with four English teachers to uncover the essence of their experiences. Findings reveal a significant tension in teachers' perceptions. While they acknowledged AI tools like ChatGPT and Canva could enhance learning efficiency and innovation, they also harboured deep concerns over AI's potential to disrupt human relationships, foster student dependency, and erode critical thinking, alongside fears of professional devaluation. Teachers' emotional responses were not static, evolving over time from initial curiosity to a more profound sense of caution and responsibility. This evolution was driven by significant challenges. Beyond technical issues like unstable infrastructure and gaps in digital competency due to limited training, teachers grappled with the inappropriateness of some AI content for their local cultural context. These pressures ultimately forced them into burdensome new roles as "directors" who must constantly control technology, and "guardians" who must defend the pedagogical space. This was most evident in one teacher's complete rejection of AI to prioritize character education and human relationships. The study concludes that without systemic support, the burden of ensuring effective AI integration falls heavily on individual teachers. Their struggle to balance innovation with pedagogical integrity highlights that they are being left to navigate complex technological and ethical terrains alone, a challenge stretching their professional capacity to its limits.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to determine if students who implement the SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review) and those who do not significantly vary in their reading comprehension text of analytical exposition texts. A quasi-experimental design and quantitative approach were used in this research. Eleventh-grade students ate a senior high school in Gresik were the participants. There were two groups: the control group did not use the SQ3R, while the experimental group did. Reading comprehension tests were used as pre- and post-test to gather data. The tests consist of 20 multiple-choice questions. Data analysis included scoring student’s correct answers, conducting normality test, homogeneity test, and performing hypothesis testing, which tested using SPSS 25. The results showed that the experimental group’s post-test mean score was 84.84 (SD=8.659), whereas the control group was 79.69 (SD=9.667). It is seen that the experimental mean score was higher than the mean score of the control group. The significance value of 0.028, which is lower than 0.05, showed a significant difference between the two groups. These results suggest that students’ reading comprehension is positively impacted by the SQ3R strategy. This strategy can be considered an effective alternative in reading instruction.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the most common communication problems and strategies used in the Intermediate Communication Skill course. This research was carried out at the State University of Surabaya by involving 100 students from the 2024 cohort who are currently in their second semester. This study employed descriptive quantitative study by using 95% confidence level and 7% margin of error, involving a sample of 100 students out of a total population of 234. The data were collected through closed and open-ended questionnaires adopted based on Dornyei and Scott (1997) taxonomy of communication problems and strategies. The data were analyzed by using SPSS with descriptive statistics, including mean and standard deviation, then supported by the responses from the open-ended questionnaire. The result of the study shows that students often face problems related to processing time performance problem and tend to use strategies such as asking for repetition, use of fillers, and asking for clarification during the Intermediate Communication Skill course. These findings suggest that students tend to select specific strategies depending on the communication problems they encounter. Therefore, it is recommended that students are encouraged to apply appropriate strategies according to the problems they face. It is also suggested that lecturers incorporate more varied learning activities to help students use communication strategies more effectively.
