Abstract

Abstract Erik’s oppression is the main focus of this study in Gaston Leroux’s novel entitled The Phantom of the Opera. This study applies descriptive analysis method. The main data is taken from the novel written by Gaston Leroux entitled The Phantom of the Opera. This thesis is purposed to analyze how the depiction of Erik’s oppression, also give the analysis of the factors and also the impacts of Erik’s oppression, that is already stated in the statement of the problem. Oppression is arbitrary thing that someone do to the minorities who does not have power to against it. The concept of oppression, refers to the unjust use of power. This study applies the concept of oppression and the theory of power and oppression by several expert, such Peg O’Connor and Elizabeth D.Hutchison. The theories and concept are well applied to reveal the statement of the problem. The analysis points out that Erik has pictured the image of oppression which dominate in this novel. Erik with his power dominate and oppress the others by giving some rules in Paris Opera, such the manager have to pay some money to him. It is because Erik with his great expertise feels has a higher power than others. This oppression made people surround him depressed and made them submissive by his power. However oppression can definitely lead to something that is not fair. Supervision and control themselves may be also avoid that action. Key Words : oppression, power Abstrak Penindasan Erik adalah fokus utama dari studi ini dalam novel Gaston Leroux berjudul The Phantom of the Opera. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode analisis deskriptif. Data utama diambil dari novel yang ditulis oleh Gaston Leroux berjudul The Phantom of the Opera. Skripsi ini bertujuan untuk menganalisa bagaimana gambaran dari penindasan Erik, serta memberikan analisis mengenai faktor dan dampak dari penindasan Erik, yang telah disebutkan dalam rumusan masalah. Penindasan adalah tindakan sewenang-wenang yang seseorang lakukan kepada minoritas atau seseorang yang tidak memiliki kekuatan untuk melawan. Konsep dari penindasan, mengacu pada ketidakadilan dari penggunaan suatu kekuasaan. Skripsi ini menggunakan konsep penindasan dan teori kekuasaan dan penindasan oleh beberapa ahli, seperti Peg O’Connor dan Elizabeth D.Hutchison. Teori dan konsep diterapkan dengan baik untuk mengungkapkan permasalahan yang ada. Analisis juga menunjukkan bahwa Erik telah digambarkan sebagai citra penindasan yang mendominasi dalam novel ini. Erik dengan kekuasaannya, mendominasi dan menindas yang lain dengan memberikan berbagai peraturan di Opera Paris, seperti sang manajer harus membayarkan sejumlah uang kepadanya. Hal ini disebabkan karena Erik dengan kemampuannya yang luar biasa, merasa memiliki kuasa yang lebih tinggi daripada yang lain. Hal ini membuat orang-orang di sekitarnya tertekan dan membuat mereka tunduk dalam kekuatannya. Bagaimanapun penindasan pasti mengarah pada sesuatu yang tidak adil. Pengawasan dan pengontrolan mungkin bisa menghindarkan dari tindakan tersebut. Kata Kunci: penindasan, kekuasaan INTRODUCTION The Phantom of the Opera is a classic epic literary work. It starts from the author, Gaston Leroux. Before Gaston Leroux died, there's even a nine films were made based on the adaptation of his novels. Because of his merit in the field of journalism, Gaston Leroux has earned a legion nobility. 1907 is an important year for Gaston Leroux, the year where he quit being journalist and his book Le mystere de la chambre jaune success in the market. Then the next year also promote his continuation sequels. Gaston Leroux regarded as the successor of Alexandre Dumas, and known as the king of fiction writers. The phantom of the opera is a classic work that has often been adapted into many work such film, since it was first published in 1910 in France. Probably from the many adaptation versions of The Phantom of the Opera, which is considered closest to the original version Leroux's novel itself is a Hollywood adaptation, starring by Lon Chaney and directed by Rupert Julian in 1925. In 1907, Gaston had published Le Mystere de la chambre jaune , which was a great success and was praised by Agatha Christie. The most famous novel was Le Fantome de l' Opera that has been translated into various languages and the movies was made. Andrew Lloyd Weber pick that story in a musical drama in 1986. The Phantom of the Opera has been translated in English, Norwegian, Czech, Hebrew, German, Denmark, and Japan. Has been noted that approximately 18 million people have watched the drama works of Andrew Lloyd Weber's, and the following sequel is 'Love Never Dies'. This novel has been repeatedly adapted to the various series on television, radio, and stage plays. Has been noted that there are about twenty-five versions of the movies. Many authors who write the sequel of this story based on this text. Even the story of the Phantom of the Opera is available and can be downloaded from playstore and is also available in the windows store. It is proved that this novel is an epic literary work and deserve to be the pride of the world heritage. Phantom of the Opera no longer owned by the French, but it has become the world's cultural heritage. This story is about the great misfortune which can come to someone when they are different from everyone else, and when that person is not accepted for who they are. When people do not look into the heart but look at appearances only, they quickly misjudge that person. This is what happens to Erik, in spite of his enormous musical talent, his skillfulness as a magician, architect, and inventor; he cannot join the human race because of his terrible face. He wants nothing more than acceptance, especially acceptance from a woman. He wants a wife and a normal life in a normal house like other people. He will never have these things and he knows it. He becomes revengeful and he oppress those people so that all he wishes comes true. He uses his genius to create a mysterious world where he can oppress people. Abstract

Abstrak Functionalism merupakan konsep sosial yang digunakan untuk menunjukkan hubungan antara stabilitas sebuah negara atau komunitas dengan kontribusi penduduk yang tinggal di dalamnya. Emile Durkheim sebagai penemu konsep, melalui Pierce di dalam buku Emile Durkheim, Essays on Sociology and Philosophy oleh Wolff (1964), mengatakan bahwa ke-stabil-an suatu negara atau komunitas dipengaruhi oleh kontribusi masyarakat dalam menjalankan tugasnya. Analisis ini menggunakan metode studi pustaka dan metode deskriptif-kualitatif. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan mengumpulkan dan menganalisis data yang menunjukkan kontribusi masyarakat kepada negara atau komunitas dalam The Giver. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah laptop, The Giver oleh Lois Lowry, dan peralatan tulis untuk membantu peneliti mengumpulkan data. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa masyarakat yang tinggal di dalam Komunitas Kesamaan dan Kesetaraan memenuhi syarat Functionalism untuk berkontribusi demi ke-stabil-an komunitas yang mereka tinggali. Kata Kunci: Functionalism, stabilitas, komunitas, kontribusi, masyarakat, The Giver. Abstract Functionalism is a social concept which is used to depict the relation between the stability of a country or community with the citizen’s contribution who lived inside it. Emile Durkheim, as the concept developer, through Pierce in Wolff’s Emile Durkheim et al., Essays on Sociology and Philosophy (1964), stated that the stability of a country or community affected by the citizens contribution in performing their duties. The analysis used library study method and descriptive qualitative method. The data collection was done by collecting and analyze the data which depicts the citizen’s contribution toward the country or the community in The Giver. The instrument that the researcher used for the research is a laptop, Lois Lowry’s The Giver, and stationary to help the researcher collecting the data. The finding shows that the citizen who lived in the Community of Similarity and Equality fulfill the Funtionalism’s requirements to contribute for the community’s stability which they lived in. Abstract

Abstrak Diaspora adalah sebuah perpindahan dari sekelompok orang yang meninggalkan tanah air mereka ke wilayah baru untuk pemukiman baru. Orang-orang diaspora akan mengalami beberapa konflik yang berhubungan dengan lingkungan baru mereka bahkan masalah dengan identitas mereka di daerah baru. Penelitian ini memfokuskan pada isu identitas diaspora di dalam novel Jhumpa Lahiri, The Lowland, yang diwakili oleh dua karakter yaitu Subhash dan Gauri. The Lowland adalah novel ambisius yang berfokus pada kisah imigran India di Amerika Serikat. Ada dua masalah yang dibahas dalam penelitian ini. Yang pertama adalah bagaimana identitas diaspora terungkap dalam novel Jhumpa Lahiri The Lowland dan apa penyebab migrasi orang India yang menggiring mereka pada identitas diaspora pada karakter dalam novel Jhumpa Lahiri, The Lowland. Konsep diaspora yang diusulkan oleh William Safran dan Robin Cohen diterapkan untuk menganalisis karakteristik dan jenis diaspora. Konsep identitas budaya yang diusulkan oleh Stuart Hall dan Avtar Brah diterapkan untuk mengungkap identitas diaspora. Identitas diaspora adalah efek dari proses asimilasi, adaptasi dengan lingkungan baru yang sama sekali berbeda dari tempat sebelumnya. Latar belakang sejarah Amerika India juga ditambahkan untuk menghubungkan kehidupan India-Amerika seperti yang digambarkan pada novel. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa identitas diaspora pada Subhash dan Gauri sangat berbeda, karena cara mereka yang berbeda tentang bagaimana mengasimilasi budaya baru. Subash mampu dalam menyesuaikan budaya dari tanah airnya dan budaya baru sedangkan Gauri langsung mengadopsi budaya baru dan melupakan budaya tanah airnya. Ada beberapa faktor yang menyebabkan Subash dan Gauri bermigrasi dari tanah air mereka, India, ke Amerika. Kemiskinan, kurangnya kesempatan kerja, dan gerakan politik adalah beberapa faktor yang menyebabkan mereka bermigrasi. Dengan demikian, karakter utama yang bermigrasi di Amerika, yang merupakan negara multikultural, membuat mereka mengalami identitas diaspora dan mengenali diri mereka sebagai India-Amerika. Kata Kunci: diaspora, identitas diaspora, imigran, India-America Abstract Diaspora is a movement of a group of people leaving their homeland into new region for new settlement. Diasporic people will experience some conflicts dealing with their new environment even the problem with their identity in new regions. This study focuses on the issue of diasporic identity in Jhumpa Lahiri’s T¬he Lowland represented by Subhash and Gauri. The Lowland is an ambitious novel focuses on the story of Indian immigrants in the United States. There are two problems discussed in this study. They are how is diasporic identity revealed in Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Lowland and what are the causes of migration on the characters in Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Lowland. The concept of diaspora proposed by William Safran and Robin Cohen are applied to analyze the characteristics and the types of diaspora. The concept of cultural identity proposed by Stuart Hall and Avtar Brah are applied to unveil the diasporic identity. Diasporic identity is the effect of the process of assimilation, an adaptation to the new environment which is totally different from the former place. The historical background of Indian Americans is also added to relate Indian American’s life as depicted throughout the novel. This study finds out that diasporic identity in Subhash and Gauri is different because of the different way how they assimilate the new culture. Subhash was able in adjusting his former culture and the new culture while Gauri adopt the new culture and forget her former culture. There are some factors which causes Subhash and Gauri migrate from their homeland to America. Poverty, no job opportunity, and political movement are some factors which cause them migrate. Thus, the characters who migrate in America, which is multicultural country, makes them experience diasporic identity and recognize themselves as Indian American. Abstract

Abstrak Fokus skripsi ini adalah alienasi Randle McMurphy dalam novel karya Ken Kesey berjudul One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Skripsi ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap alienasi yang di alami Randle McMurphy dan untuk mendeskripsikan dampak dari alienasi terhadap pencarian identitas diri. Skripsi ini mencakup analisa mengenai bagaimana alienasi terwujud dalam beragam cara. Metode analisa deskriptif beserta teori identitas, mirror stage dari Jacques Lacan. Hasildari skripsi in menunjukkan bahwa alienasi Randle McMurphy menentukan pencarian identitasnya yang terrefleksi dari gambaran dirinya melalui peran masyarakat dan mempunyai dampak berupa: mudah dikontrol, melakukan tindakan criminal dan ketidakamanan diri yang membawanya pada penderitaan. Alienasi membawanya sedikit demi sedikit jauh dari masyarakat dan dirinya sendiri. Alienasi pada Randle McMurphy dapat dilihat dari kemampuannya di masyarakat dan pandangan masyarakat mengenai dirinya. Seperti alienasi pada Randle McMurphy atas penangkapan dirinya dalam kasus pemerkosaan yang terjadi di pertanian Pendleton, kemudian membawanya ke rumah sakit untuk pemeriksaan lebih lanjut dimana dia justru menjadi produk pribadi and perlahan ditemukan bahwa dia kehilangan identitas diri yang otentik. Selanjutnya dia mendapati dirinya dalam perjuangan kelam yang menuntun dirinya kepada kebebasan abadi yakni kematian. Kata Kunci: Alienasi, identitas, society’s gap, imaginary and consequences of society, non-authentic identity Abstract This study focuses on Randle McMurphy’s alienation in search of identity in Ken Kesey’s One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The purpose of this study is to depict the alienation in Randle McMurphy in Ken Kesey’s One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest and to describe the impact of alienation toward his search of identity. This study includes the analysis of how the alienation itself manifest in different ways. This study applies descriptive analysis method and theory of alienation in Jacques Lacan’s mirror stage. This study finds out that Randle McMurphy alienation affects his searching of identity which resembled by the imaginary of himself through the society’s order and have the impacts: i.e. easy to be controlled, committing crimes and insecurities that lead to self-destruction. Alienation is slowly but sure distances him from the society and himself. Alienation in Randle McMurphy is seen through his feature in the society and imaginary order by the society. As Randle McMurphy’s alienation seen in Pendleton work farm for being accused for statutory rape, he is taken to the hospital for treatment and further examination where he instead becomes the patient’s self product and slowly identified being lost his authentic identity. Later he recovers himself in the grim struggle that lead him to the eternally freedom, death. Key Word: Alienation identity, society’s gap, imaginary and consequences of society. Abstract

Abstrak Studi ini berkaitan dengan dua kebudayaan antara Asia dan Amerika melalui tradisi dan adat istiadat kedua tokoh utama dalam novel Shilpi Somaya Gowda berjudul Secret Daughter: Secret Daughter. Tradisi digambarkan oleh Krishnan, lelaki India memutuskan untuk bermigrasi ke Amerika demi mendapatkan pendidikan dan pekerjaan yang lebih baik. Sebagai generasi pertama yang meninggalkan tanah airnya, sangat susah bagi Krishnan untuk melepas kebiasaan dan semua adat yang didapat dan dijalankannya. Pemikiran tradisional membuat Krishnan sangat tegas dengan apa yang dilakukan keluarga nya meskipun istri nya adalah orang Amerika dan anaknya, Asha yang tumbuh dan berkembang di Amerika. Konflik mulai terjadi ketika Asha sebagai generasi kedua tidak begitu suka dan memahami adat tradisional yang selalu diterapkan Krishnan. Akan tetapi, Krishnan tetap mengikuti dan menghargai semua adat di Amerika sebagai tuan rumah. Studi ini mengungkap tradisi India Krishnan dan modernitas Barat Asha menggunakan teori post colonial dari Homi Bhabha. Studi ini menggunakan teori tersebut, sebab Krishnan menunjukkan performa sebagai seorang kepala keluarga dan mengimitasi cara Barat ketika itu berhubungan dengan kebebasan. Si suami menunjukkan caranya untuk tetap mempertahankan adat istiadatnya. Analisis studi ini menunjukkan pengaruh modernitas terhadap kedua tokoh: adanya adopsi dan adaptasi terhadap budaya Barat dan pencampuran kultur India dan Barat. Secara keseluruhan, analisis membuktikan teori Homi Bhabha mengenai korelasi dan koeksistensi Barat dan Timur yang muncul dalam novel. Interpretasi modernitas mengenali kesalahan konsep kemanusiaan dan mengurai perubahan baru yang signifikan yang lebih baik mengenai detail kehidupan. Kata kunci: Tradisi, modernitas, post kolonialisme. Abstract This study deals with two cultures between Asia and America via the traditions and customs of the two main characters in the novel of Shilpi Somaya Gowda entitled Secret Daughter: Secret Daughter. Tradition was described by Krishnan, an Indian boy decided to migrate to America in order to get an education and a better job. As the first generation to leave their homeland, very difficult for Krishnan to remove all the habits and customs that come and run. Traditional thinking makes Krishnan very firmly with what his family even though his wife is American and her son, Asha growing and developing in America. The conflict began when Asha as the second generation is not so fond of and understand the traditional customs that have always applied Krishnan. However, Krishnan still follow and appreciate all the custom in America as the host. These studies reveal the Indian tradition and Western modernity Asha Krishnan using post-colonial theory of Homi Bhabha. This study uses the theory, because Krishnan performed as a head of the family and imitate the Western way when it relates to freedom. The husband shows how to retain custom. The analysis of this study show the impact of modernity on two figures: the adoption and adaptation to Western culture and blending Indian and Western culture. Overall, the analysis proves the theory of Homi Bhabha on the correlation and the coexistence of West and East that appear in the novel. Interpretation of modernity recognize the concept of human error and parse the new changes significantly better about the details of life. Keywords: Tradition, modernity, post-colonialism.

Abstract

Abstrak Dalam novel bertajuk To Kill a Mockingbird, isu kesetaraan menjadi ide utama yang dibahas oleh sang pengarang. Bagaimana praktek ketidaksetaraan terjadi di masyarakat yang masih terjebak di dalam paradigma lama semacam prasangka dan diskriminasi sebagai suatu budaya yang salah. Tujuan utama dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui bagaimana tindakan perjuangan untuk kesetaraan yang dilakukan oleh Atticus Finch sebagai salah satu tokoh sentral dalam novel To Kill a Mockingbird oleh Harper Lee, menggunakan konsep 5 dimensi kesetaraan dari Baker et. al. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif sebagai metode riset dalam usaha untuk menganalisis novel. Aspek-aspek kesetaraan yang diperjuangkan oleh karakter utama bukan hanya meliputi isu kesetaraan yang ada di masyarakat, seperti isu kesetaraan gender, isu kesetaraan ras, dan isu kesetaraan sosial, melainkan lebih fokus pada konsep 5 dimensi kesetaraan, yang diantaranya ada kesetaraan kehormatan dan pengakuan, kesetaraan sumber daya, kesetaraan kasih sayang, perhatian dan solidaritas, kesetaraan kekuasaan, dan kesetaraan pekerjaan dan pendidikan. Kata kunci: Kesetaraan, Perjuangan, Dimensi kesetaraan Abstract In To Kill A Mockingbird, the issues of equality become the main idea which is discussed by the writer of the novel. The inequality practices happened in the community who was still being trapped in the old paradigm such as prejudice and discrimination as a wrong culture. The main purpose of the study is to recognize how the struggle action for equality, which was done by Atticus Finch as one of the central character in Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird using Baker et. al. concept’s of the 5 dimensions of equality. This study uses descriptive qualitative as the research method to analyze the story. The aspects of equality which was struggled by the main character are not only based on the issues of equality in the society; such as gender equality, racial equality, and social equality, but also focused on the concept of the5 dimensions of equality, such as equal respect and recognition, equal resources, equal love, care, and solidarity, equal power, and equal working and learning. Abstract

Abstrak Sifat berkecenderungan untuk berkembang pada manusia membawa kita kepada kelahiran dari peradaban. Dipengaruhi oleh tekanan dari perasaan tidak aman pada individu, peradaban menciptakan kerja sama yang kemudian di rumuskan menjadi hukum dan peraturan agar menciptakan keadaan masyarakat yang stabil. dalam perjalanan menuju keadaan masyarakat yang stabil, beberapa kecenderungan individual dalam melakukan sesuatu yang tidak menguntungkan terhadap maksud dari tujuan peraturan menciptakan penilaian moralitas. penilaian moralitas ini didasarkan kepada nilai nilai masyarakat, yang lebih jauh di terapkan kepada beberapa individual, untuk menunjukkan baik dan buruk belandasan atas peraturan yang telah disetujui di dalam masyarakat. Studi ini dilakukan untuk menganalisa perilaku manusia terhadap asuhan konsep moralitas dalam masyarakat yang bermoral pada awalnya. studi ini di proyeksikan terhadap novel William Golding 'The Lord of the Flies' menggunakan anak anak sebagai subjeknya. cerita tentang anak anak Inggris yang terdampar di sebuah pulau tak dikenal adalah proyeksi dari mekanisme dari kelahiran atas sebuah peradaban dan istilah moralitas. studi ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan alasan anak anak merubah pihak dari menjadi beradab positif dengan Ralph menjadi beradab negatif dengan Jack menggunakan penggabungan tiga teori; Moralitas oleh Anscombe, Etika Kebaikan oleh Aristotle, dan Peradaban oleh Freud dan untuk menggambarkan Tahapan Moralitas dan Immoralitas oleh Kohlberg yang dialami oleh Jack sang Pemburu dan Ralph sang Ketua. Stud ini menggunakan metoda deskriptif kualitatif dan riset perpustakaan dalam pengambilan data. Hasil dari studi menunjukkan bahwa kebiadapan dari anak anak adalah efek dari tujuan peraturan yang tidak tercapai dan kemajuan dari dua pemimpin tersebut berefek besar terhadap perilaku masyarakat berdasarkan perkembangan moralitasnya. Kata Kunci: Moralitas, Peradaban, Kebiadaban Abstract The developing nature of human being takes us into the birth of civilization. Affected by the suppression of unsecure feeling of individuals, civilization creates cooperation that formulates into law and rules for the need of stable society. In the pursuit of stable society, a certain individual tendencies on doing something unfavorable towards the purpose of the rules creates them the morality judgment. This morality judgment based on the society values, that further applied on a certain individuals, to show them good and bad in the favor of the agreed rules of the society. This study conducted to analyze the human behavior towards the upbringing of morality concepts in once a civilized society. The study projected in William Golding’s The Lord of the Flies novel using the children as the subject. The story of deserted English boys in an unknown island is a projection of the mechanism of the birth of a civilization and morality terms. This study aims to describe the reason the children turn their side from being morally positive with Ralph to being morally negative with Jack using three theories mixed; Anscombe’s Morality, Aristotle’s Virtue Ethics, and Freud’s Civilizations and to depict Kohlberg’s Stages of Morality and Immorality undergone by Jack the Hunter and Ralph the Chief. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method and library research in data collection. Result of the study shows that the savagery of the children are the effect of the purpose of the rules that are not reached and the advancement of the two society leaders greatly affects the society behavior based on their morality development.
