Abstract

Nommensen's missionary work is an outstanding act of intercultural and dialogical evangelism. His eagerness to learn Batak Toba people's culture and language shaped his cultural sensitivity in evangelism and made his missionary work successful. The biblical concept of "love your God and love your neighbor" in Nommensen will be examined and compared with Batak Toba people's understanding in four dimensions of belief, sense of belonging, behavior, and experience. Afterwards, how Nommensen's dialogical approach appropriates this concept in Batak Toba communities who constantly live at war will be examined.KEYWORDS: dialogical; appropriation; love; evangelization; culture.

Abstract

At a glance, William James’ conception of truth in epistemology, especially in its critique of Modernism’s a-temporal, a-contextual, and absolutist conception of truth sounds very similar with a critique from Herman Dooyeweerd of the Reformational tradition. In this article, I would show what those similarities are and how the two systems are radically different. This research may be significant for Pragmatism is widely known and accepted in the late 20th century and well into the 21st century. Pragmatism is quite successful in grounding the elitist and abstract discourse of the academia to its daily contexts. KEYWORDS: James; Dooyeweerd; Truth; Pragmatism; Refomational Epistemology.

Abstract

This article seeks to express the uniqueness of John Calvin's understanding of the meaning of Imago Dei as his reaction to the understanding of the theologians of Irenaeus and Medieval Scholastic Aquinas, then to explain the implications of Imago Dei theologically in the context of God's creation along with its significance on self-identity in the digital age. Calvin restores Imago Dei's view back to the bible. His thesis is human must have the right knowledge about God and himself. It is only through Jesus Christ and His word can a man be renewed and knows himself as Imago Dei, so that he can glorify God again. And it is only through the work of the Holy Spirit can man reflects God in this world. KEYWORDS: Imago Dei; total depravity; redemption; renewal; knowing oneself.

Abstract

This article uses theological-ethical approach to focus on the presentation of the relationship of religion and state in the concept of principled pluralism and provides a reflection on the life of the nation and state in Indonesia which has Pancasila. The theological basis used as a reference is the Reformed theology of the Neo-Calvinism wing which was pioneered by Abraham Kuyper and forwarded by ideas from Kuyperians such as Gordon Spykman, James Skillen, Jonathan Chaplin. The author will argue that Pancasila is in harmony with principled pluralism. KEY WORDS: principled pluralism, structural pluralism, confessional pluralism, Pancasila.

Abstract

Joseph Fletcher’s theory of situational ethics is so influential since the 20th century until this day. The fruits of his thoughts have spread to all aspects including medical ethics and medical law. Fletcher claimed that the situational ethics that he presented had its source from Lord Jesus’ and Apostle Paul’s teachings. But the theory of situational ethics is not agreed upon by all streams in Christianity including the Reformed stream. In this article, many points of Joseph Fletcher’s situational ethics in his book ‘Situation Ethics: The New Morality’ are discussed and analyzed according to Reformed perspective. KEYWORDS: situational ethics; Joseph Fletcher; love; Reformed.

Abstract

The Sermon on the Mount is one of the most famous passages in the Bible, but unfortunately it has a polemic interpretation in the reformed circles. This article analyzes two interpretations of the Sermon on the Mount from two well-known reformed figures, John Calvin and Martin Luther, to discover the heart of the problem. This article shows that Calvin's interpretation is more responsible than Luther's, but there is a beautiful legitimate application that readers can learn from Luther. Keywords: Interpretation, Sermon on the Mount, John Calvin, Martin Luther, historical criticism, law and gospel.

Abstract

Protestantism in France has an ambiguous attitude to the surrounding culture, because of its position as a small minority. The other forces present are Roman Catholic authoritarianism and the liberal free-thinking of Enlightenment humanism, represented by the likes of Voltaire and Rousseau. The paradox is that since the Revolution in 1789, which was anti-royal and anti-religious, when Protestantism has sided with the majority Roman Church it has undermined its Reformed identity, and when it has sided with libertarian free-thinking it has undermined its Christian identity. This remains a feature of French Protestantism until the present day. As a result of this tension, the thought of one of France’s greatest thinkers, John Calvin, became virtually unknown, not only in French culture and society as a whole, but also within French Protestantism itself. Then, Westminster seminary's Presbyterian and Reformed heritage, and finally, authority of and subscription to the confessions. To define Reformed confessional theology which arose in the sixteenth and seventeenth century, this article include the table of the confessions of Westminster seminary or the NAPARC churches.
