Abstract

In this article, the author gives an account of the life and theology of C.H. Spurgeon (1834-1892), the famous Reformed Baptist Minister, who preached in London in the second half of the nineteenth century. The account demonstrates that Spurgeon was not only the most renowned preacher of his day, most of whose sermons were published and are still read widely today but also an author who published many volumes. In addition to his work as preacher and writer, Spurgeon built children’s orphanages, started a theological college and assisted in many noble causes. As part of this benevolent work, his church contributed large sums to support poor relief. Having told Spurgeon’s story, the article then indicates six areas of Spurgeon’s life and ministry which are helpful for us today: his Passion for Souls; his Devotion to Prayer and Study; His attitude to the Bible & Expository Ministry; his Pastoral Ministry; His Practical Christianity; and His refusal to compromise on the truth of the gospel. Abstract

This article shows that there are at least two key hermeneutical tensions in evangelical feminist interpretation of the Bible. The first hermeneutical tension concern the issue of readers' prejudices. Feminists remind us that readers are always disposed to read texts against the background of their own expectations, customs, and world views. And the second hermeneutical tension, namely the tension over the nature of the actual practices of the first century church. Evangelical feminists have tended to give different answers depending on the passage that they are interpreting. In sum, feminism in its hermeneutical principles alerts us to the role of reader prejudice and social background in understanding texts. KEYWORDS: Hermeneutic, feminist, prejudice, Christian

Abstract

Thinking in terms of ecclesiastical power as a negative force has often found a breeding ground in the Pastoral Epistles. To what extent is that justified? This article examines a passage that always comes up when the position of women in the church is discussed: 1 Timothy 2:8−15. Three aspects will be considered consecutively: power, powerlessness, and authorised power. Power says something about the underlying problem that Timothy faced: the male/female relationship in the Ephesian congregation threatened to degenerate into a power struggle. Powerlessness refers to the story of Adam and Eve mentioned in verses 13−15. The Genesis narrative recounts human weakness, which in 1 Timothy becomes a sort of triptych about Eve and creation, Eve and the fall, and Eve and redemption. Authorised power is the way in which the problematic situation in Ephesus was regulated with apostolic authority, to create space for the trustworthy Word. Paul’s instructions about the behaviour of women could nowadays easily be considered a kind of misogynistic power play. However, the apostle should be interpreted on his own terms. This is true both for his social context and for his missionary drive. KEYWORDS: power, man, woman, congregation, Paul

Abstract

Christian teachers do not naturally connect theology with their professional practice. This article explores the reasons for this, which all have to do with how theory functions in teaching. Theory will mainly come into focus when practical problems arise, but theological concepts are not the first to come into view. The article states that tensions that teachers experience in practice are triggers for theological reflection. This is in coherence with the call for Christians to test and discern what is the will of God (Rom. 12:2). Teachers are supposed to be able to reflect on three dimensions where tensions can be recognized. The first is the response to general cultural ideas. The second is the call for a collective theological vision in school teams. Finally, existential tensions find solutions in theological language. Prospective Christian teachers should have training in to reflect on those three levels.

Abstract

The present article handles the recent criticism of the so-called ‘two Bavincks hypothesis’ of Jan Veenhof voiced by Bavinck scholars. Since 1968 Veenhof has introduced the two Bavincks hypothesis, this hypothesis has had significant effects on Bavinck studies in the second half of the twentieth century. Following Veenhof’s bipolar portrayal of Bavinck, several Bavinck scholars have labeled Bavinck’s theological characteristic as the two Bavincks, namely, advocating his theological identity as a figure who has unresolved duality between orthodoxy and modernity in his thought. However, numerous studies have recently attempted to amend and redress this two Bavincks hypothesis by scholars who only argue for one Bavinck rather than two Bavincks. In the light of this, the present article first examines the recent criticisms for the two Bavincks hypothesis respectively and further argues that there is one Bavinck, who is an orthodox Calvinist and at the same time a modern European man.

Abstract

In this article, the author argues on the importance of the Reformation. Despite over 500 years has passed since the reformation, the roman catholic church has not moved towards the true understanding of the gospel, in terms of justification as being declared right. Furthermore, in the author's context of American Evangelism, pelagianism seems taking over the mindset of the biblically illiterate. The preaching of the evangel that justifies the ungodly must be the call of the day.

Abstract

In this article, the author argues of the significance of Psalm singing in Calvin's Liturgy of the Lord's Supper. Metrical psalm singing is one of Calvin's contributions towards the changes in reformation worship. Furthermore, his emphasis on its use in the Liturgy of the Lord's Supper is an important retrieval from the wider diversity in many contemporary church worship. Throughout the article, the author endorses a creative use of psalm singing in the church. Such practice must not be forgotten that has been formative to the reformation in the past.

Abstract

Since modern times, the nature of theology has experienced as an unnecessary separation between theoretical-doctrinal discipline or practical application discipline. The purpose of this article is to propose the nature of theology as application and draw its implication in the context of theological education and ecclesiastical ministry. By using the conceptual analysis method, the author analyzes and uses the view of John M. Frame which argues that theology should not be seen only as an abstract theoretical doctrine, or only teaches how to live, but theology should be viewed as life itself. The implication of theology as application in the context of theological education and ecclesiastical ministry shows a bounding and an involvement between seminary and church. By viewing theology as application, the goal is not only limited to theorizing, but also to be the doers of God’s words because there is a close relationship between what is known and what is done, and vice versa.

Abstract

The Reformed theologian, Benyamin Fleming Intan, analyzed Christian theologians thinking in Indonesia and found out that Pancasila did not contradict with Christianity. In line with this, when the young Reformed theologian, Nathaniel Gray Sutanto assessed the relationship between Pancasila and Christianity. then he provided an epistemological framework that the existence of the Indonesian state and Pancasila had been allowed by sovereign of God. Based on their epistemological framework, I want to go over them by offering a new and more concrete way or approach in multireligious context, called comparative theology. For this reason, the author examines definition and development of comparative theology with the latest comparative theology books, then, the author also looks into the Bible and church history. That comparative theology has been carried out by biblical writers and figures in the church history even though theology comparative has not become a scientific discipline yet. I argue that comparative theology can be used in Indonesia with Reformed tradition because the nature of comparative theology is hospitable for religious harmony and still being faithful to the Bible testimony.

Abstract

This paper will criticize one kind of approach taken by Sallie McFague on the concept of the Body of God to explain the relationship between humans and nature. This evaluation was carried out because the approach taken by McFague is an approach that seeks to revise Christian orthodoxy which is considered unfriendly to the environment and is not sufficient to answer the problem of the ecological crisis. Some of the revisions made by McFague are the story of the creation and incarnation of Christ. Through this paper, it will be evaluated whether the story of creation and incarnation needs to be revised to answer the problem of the ecological crisis.
