Abstract

This chapter appraised the 10-3-4 system of education in Nigeria in line with the sustainable development goals (SDGs) of UNO and vision 2030. Particular emphasis was placed on the SDG 4 whose focus is on equitable and qualitative education for all irrespective of background, religion, race or disability. The goal of sustainable development education is to raise global citizens that can fit into our multicultural world with appropriate knowledge, skills and competences that could align with the demands of immediate localities and the world as a whole. Nigeria’s current national policy on education (FRN, 2013) lays emphasis on compulsory basic education for all. However, findings reveal an abysmal implementation of the scheme, culminating in a high number of out-of-school children. The post basic and tertiary education are also in pathetic conditions as they have failed markedly to address issues of sustainable development, and pave way for unemployment rate to continue to escalate. The study through secondary data, observed poor implementation of the policy, inadequate funding, corruption, unqualified personnel among others as the banes of sustainable education in the country. Nigeria’s government should take measures to revive the educational sector in order to meet up with the sustainable development goals. The study recommends an overhaul of the nation’s educational system.

Abstract

Early education of children in Nigeria has been of great concern to parents, educators, and other stakeholders in education. This has led to a high investment in the educational sector, bus less progress is made at the pre-primary level. Many questions have arisen as to why this low progress has been made. Some attributed this low progress to the issue of classroom management, teacher motivation, and many more. This study, therefore, examined classroom management as a prerequisite to pre-schoolers motivation and affection toward learning and school in Edo South senatorial districts. The study was descriptive, and four research questions were raised to guide the study. The target population comprised classroom teachers in private and public pre-primary schools in the Edo South senatorial district of Edo State. The sample for this study was five hundred (500) teachers drawn from private and public pre-primary schools in the senatorial district. The research instrument used for this study was a questionnaire designed by the researchers. It was a four-Likert scale. It had two sections; Section A consists of the respondents' demographic data while Section B contains the questions that elicited responses from the respondents with response options like, Strongly Agree, Agree, Strongly Disagree, and Disagree. Three experts in the field determined the face and content validity of the instrument. Cronbach alpha method was used to ascertain the reliability of the instrument. It gave an alpha value of 0.89, indicating that the instrument was reliable. Data gathered through the questionnaire were analyzed using mean and standard deviation. A criterion mean of 2.50 was used to accept the items. In contrast, an interpretative norm of 7.50, the product of the criterion mean and the number of items in each cluster, was used to ascertain the extent of teachers' classroom management and motivation on children's affection for school. The findings proved that classroom management affects children's motivation and affection for learning and school. However, teacher motivation was not significant. Therefore, it was concluded that classroom management is a significant factor in facilitating pupil motivation and affection to learning and school. The study recommended that School teachers go for periodical in-service training on classroom management courses. Moreover, Education stakeholders should invest more in the learning environment and make it more attractive to learners by providing all necessary learning facilities.

Abstract

Multimodal discourse analysis (MDA) is a framework used to analyse a subject by drawing meanings from various semiotic modes such as visuals and audio. Studies have been done to validate the applicability of MDA in advertisements, textbook images, and even website designs. Adding to the validity of MDA, this study adopts the framework to analyze literary devices in films, filling the gap present in previous MDA in films where they focused on character relationship and overall meaning. With the development of various other ways to tell a story other than plain text, this study attempts to analyze literary devices that are found in a literature’s filmic counterparts. Metaphors, symbolism, and allegories that are found in the book The Great Gatsby will be analysed in its 2013 film adaptation to compare and contrast the differences in its way of presentation using Kress and van Leeuwen’s Grammar of Visual Design. Findings suggest that the adopted framework is applicable in analysing literary devices present in the film adaptation of The Great Gatsby as the effective use of visuals allows viewers to better understand the literary devices that were used in the original book. This finding provides additional support for the validity of MDA in film analysis, as well as bridges the relationship between film and literature; thus broadening the prospects of using film as a tool to enhance the effectiveness of literature comprehension and teaching.

Crime and punishment in the 4.0 era are 1) a behavior, 2) a type of social phenomenon in interactions that are built between humans, 3) natural and social phenomena, 4) including interactions between people in social life, 5) considered as a process deterministic mechanics based on the law of causality. So that nowadays the study of crime and punishment in the 4.0 era needs to be developed in order to realize national development. This research method is a normative research where causal deterministics in era 4.0 are aimed at sentencing and are not only based on the concept of retributive justice alone, but also on the principle of benefits generated in the sense of aiming to prevent the recurrence of similar crimes and thereby create order and national security. The results of the study indicate that crime and punishment against socially causal deterministic challenges that lead to criminal liability in the 4.0 era is a necessity as Satjipto Rahardjo revealed that law always evolves following human development and follows the needs and values that live in humans to realize social justice for people. all Indonesian citizens, especially for society 5.0, especially in terms of digitalization through modern law as a new and renewable breakthrough and making legal paradigm changes according to the demands of the times.
