Abstract

The performance and emission study on the different types of piston bowls and the depth variation of the piston bowl is discussed in this paper. Simulations were conducted using the open-source software, Diesel-RK. Three models of piston bowls and five variations of piston depth were used to estimate performance and emissions. The type of fuel and engine operating conditions were set to be constant. The performance responses consist of power, Specific Fuel Consumption (SFC), and brake mean effective pressure (BMEP). On the other hand, the emissions of NOx and Particulate matter (PM) were analyzed. Results show that both power response and BMEP improve with an increase in piston depth across all types of piston bowls. On the contrary, the SFC trend line shows a decline as piston depth increases. For the emissions, NOx experiences a rising trend as the depth of the piston bowl increases at all types of piston bowls. Conversely, the particulate matter (PM) trend is decreasing as the depth of the piston bowl increases.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the growth kinetics of saccharomyces cerevisiae in the bioethanol production process based on oil palm empty fruit bunch waste. Growth kinetics parameters are an important basis for fermentor design, especially the maximum growth rate constant to determine the minimum biomass residence time. The minimum biomass residence time is a critical point for fermentor operation in processing empty oil palm fruit bunches into bioethanol. This research was the laboratory experimental research method with a quantitative approach. The result in this research shows the growth kinetics parameters of saccharomyces cerevisiae have been successfully determined to produce the highest bioethanol at 5% KOH variation. Kinetic analysis established a substrate saturation coefficient (KS) of 28.195 g/L under the S < 10 K criterion, alongside a maximum specific growth rate (mM) of 0.00073 hour?¹. Furthermore, the process demonstrated a biomass yield (Yx/S) of 0.053 g/g and a product yield (YP/S) of 2.96 g/g, culminating in a final bioethanol productivity of 0.41 g/L·h. Therefore, these growth kinetics parameters can be used in designing a fermentor system for processing empty oil palm fruit bunches into bioethanol.

Abstract

Checker bricks in regenerative furnaces gradually accumulate deposits from glass raw materials during long-term operation, reducing heat transfer efficiency and obstructing combustion air and exhaust gas flow. These deposits increase furnace pressure, accelerate checker brick degradation, and shorten furnace service life. This study evaluates the performance of a non-premixed combustion burner for checker brick maintenance. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted using the non-premixed combustion model in ANSYS Fluent with different air-to-fuel ratios (AFR) and validated experimentally. The optimum performance was achieved at an AFR of 10.6:1, producing a maximum flame temperature of 944°C and a flame length of 1,683 mm, satisfying the required heating temperature and flame penetration for effective deposit removal. Experimental validation showed stable burner operation at air damper openings between 55% and 60%, successfully melting deposits on the checker brick surface. The proposed burner is suitable for regenerative furnace maintenance, while the validated CFD model provides a reliable approach for future burner optimization and heating coverage analysis of checker brick treatment.

Abstract

This paper re-assesses the preventive maintenance interval of starter-generator part number 8260-124 installed on ATR 72-212A aircraft using operational removal data from Airline X between 2019 and 2024. A quantitative case-study approach was applied to 65 removal records, comprising 39 scheduled and 26 unscheduled removals. The analysis included failure-mode classification, Pareto analysis, statistical distribution fitting, Mean Time to Failure estimation, survival analysis, Component Removal Rate, and Mean Time Between Unscheduled Removal. Brush wear was identified as the dominant failure mode, accounting for 53.8% of unscheduled removals. The lognormal distribution provided the best fit to the Time Since Installation data, with an adjusted Anderson–Darling statistic of 0.746 and a correlation coefficient of 0.989. The estimated MTTF was 907.022 flight hours, substantially below the existing 1,200-flight-hour maintenance interval, while the survival probability declined to 51.6% at 900 flight hours and 13.1% at 1,000 flight hours. These findings indicate that the current interval provides insufficient preventive margin. Therefore, an 800-flight-hour interval is recommended to reduce brush-related deterioration, unscheduled removals, and associated operational disruptions.

Abstract

Disturbances caused by lightning strikes in the electric power system may occur in the transmission and distribution area. This paper aim is to analysis of placement and rating selection of lightning arresters for 20 kV distribution networks. A case study was conducted in the network assets of PT. PLN (Persero) at the Maroko feeder, Rayon Duri, Indonesia. This study method employed a quantitative analytical approach to evaluate the optimal placement and rating selection of 5 kA and 10 kA distribution-class lightning arresters within the 20 kV network of PT. PLN (Persero) Rayon Duri. The results of placement and arrester rating for the Maroko feeder revealed the voltage rating specification of 19.2 kV and a current of 10 kA. It was expected that the arrester can minimize lightning strike disturbances that cause induction. The results obtained after conducting simulations, the arrester can reduce a fairly large voltage quickly with a distance of 5.6334 meters from the disturbance and the duration of 1.2 - 50 ?s. Therefore, placing the arrester in close proximity to the equipment significantly improves insulation coordination by accelerating the suppression and safe discharge of lightning-induced surges.

Abstract

Passive LC filters are commonly installed at the output of Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) to limit harmonic distortion in Electrical Submersible Pump (ESP) systems. However, capacitor degradation may reduce filter effectiveness and alter the electrical behavior of the entire drive system. This paper examines the impact of passive filter capacitor failure in a 390 kVA VSD-driven ESP installation using field measurements obtained under three operating conditions: before the filter, during normal LC filter operation, and after disconnection of a failed 200 ?F capacitor while the output reactor remained in service. Harmonic performance was evaluated in accordance with IEEE Std 519-2022, followed by impedance and resonance analyses to explain the measured responses. The results indicate that capacitor removal increased THDi from 4.30% to 12.30% and THDv from 39.50% to 61.23%, confirming a substantial reduction in harmonic suppression capability. The analytical evaluation further shows that changes in filter impedance promote resonance between the output reactor and the downhole cable capacitance. A preliminary single-tuned passive filter design is finally proposed to improve harmonic mitigation under comparable operating conditions.
