Abstract

Jakarta as the state capital of Indonesia faces complex problems in daily life, especially those related to high population density, urbanization, traffic congestion, natural disasters, and severe environmental conditions. These problems are becoming justifications for the need to move the country's capital to East Kalimantan as decided by the government. East Kalimantan was chosen as the new capital, based on the results of intensive studies, having very minimal disaster reserves such as floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, forest fires and landslides. East Kalimantan is also considered to have a strategic location. If drawn coordinates, its location is in the middle of Indonesian territory, and is near urban areas. Dissemination of information about those planning is done through various communication networks, including on social media. This study aims to identify the dominant actors in communication networks on Twitter with the hashtag #IbuKotaBaru during the periods of August 1 to September 22, 2019. The study was conducted using quantitative approach by employing GEPHI tools. The results revealed that in the #IbuKotaBaru communication network, there were three dominant actors who actively disseminate the relevant information namely detikfinance, yulionta and derupiston. The most popular actor was detikfinance. There are 63.33% of actors who have a high closeness with other actors, there are no actor who mediate with other actors in communication. Yulionta and Derupiston are the two most important actors in disseminating information about the move to new country’s capital in the #IbuKotaBaru communication network as indicated by its highest values of Eigenvector Centrality.

Abstract

This article aims to present baseline study result on environmental issues broadcasted on Indonesian television stations in the context of Indonesian media system. Data was collected from one year broadcast of 63 TV from July 2017 to June 2018. The study found that eleven out of sixty three television stations broadcasted 425 programs related to environmental issues. The frequency of programs on environmental issues broadcasted in only 11 TV stationsrevealed that it is only small number of Indonesian TV stations broadcast environmental news. Content analysis method conducted to identify annual distribution of the news within the context of dry and rainy season, news sources, and issues. The study identified that in most of the cases, government officials and the minister or representatives of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in central and regional governments were quoted as sources. In general, news sources were not representing stakeholders of environmental problems. The contents broadcasted the most were related to forest fire including: forest fires, hotspot, smog, peat and land use change. The environmental issues covered were mostly related to those emerging in dry season in Indonesia, thus ignoring the problems emerged during rainy season. This study has found that Indonesian TV channels have not played significant role in mainstreaming environmental issues and contributing to educating and sensitizing the Indonesian public about environmental issues.

Abstract

Fighting disinformation through anti-hoax training has been successfully carried out all over Indonesia, following the massive anti-hoax campaign. However, the methods of training and teaching fact checking as the basics of the anti-hoax movement to reduce hoaxes and its harmful effects among the public need to be revised. In finding the solution, a new and innovative approach was launched. A web drama series in the form of videos depicting story in popular style was produced and screened in 56 workshops and uploaded in YouTube channel. Analyzing survey based pre-test and post-test questionnaires, toward 603 housewives and 809 young people who represented targets of the Stop Hoax Indonesia (SHI) project in 2019 resulted in some conclusions. For housewives, the web video drama series has added knowledge and motivates them to do fact checking. But for young people, though they show motivations to do fact checking, they weren’t able to discern material regarding the role of journalism as the important element of verifying information. These findings marked the importance of revising training materials using the web video drama to reach maximum effects on various targets. On the other hand, research results have reinforced the need to innovate teaching materials in order to enhance participants' experience in dealing with hoax or disinformation in real life. More videos packed with popular culture style are recommended.
