Abstract

Patriarchal families are still the main pattern in the social structure of Sumbertumpuk Village, Pasuruan, which creates gender inequality and positions women in a subordinate position. This research aims to explore the dynamics of women's roles in patriarchal families and examine the views of liberal feminism as the basis for the transformation of gender equality in the neighborhood. This research method is qualitative research using a gender-based critical descriptive approach, through observation and in-depth interviews with women and men in the family. The results show that women in Sumbertumpuk face a double burden and limited access to education and economic opportunities, which strengthens their dependence on men. However, awareness of the need for change is starting to show through solidarity and small discussions within the family, as well as support from policies that favor women's empowerment. These findings emphasize the importance of policies and education that can facilitate a paradigm shift from patriarchal structures towards more egalitarian families, as supported by the philosophy of liberal feminism.

Abstract

Social media has become a public space that highlights the importance of physical appearance and influences how individuals judge their appearance. One phenomenon that has emerged in Indonesia is the existence of beautiful campus accounts, such as @unpad.geulis, @ugmcantik, @ubcantikid, and @unejcantik. Women are often objectified on social media, so we wanted to study the Instagram account @umcantik_id to explore female students' perceptions of the existence of the “umcantik_id” account at Malang State University. The method used is qualitative research with an exploratory approach design that aims to find out “what happened,” “seek new insights,” and "assess phenomena from a new/different perspective (Saunders et al., 2009). The results obtained reveal four stages. The input stage includes sources of information exposure and motivation to follow the @umcantik_id account, the processing stage includes cognitive beauty schemas, the evaluation stage includes subjective interpretation of the @umcantik_id account, and the output stage includes the impact and expectations of the @umcantik_id account. Suggestions for further research include using documentary studies of post comments, exploring male informants, conducting follow-up studies on informants whose photos were posted on the @umcantik_id account, and involving the account administrator as one of the informants to obtain more perspectives. Keywords: Beauty Account, female student, perception.

Abstract

Children’s emotional development is a crucial aspect of personality formation and social adjustment. Children living in orphanages are more vulnerable to emotional problems due to the loss of parental figures, traumatic experiences, and the demands of adapting to a collective caregiving environment. This study aims to describe the emotional problems experienced by children in orphanages and to examine the role of Guidance and Counseling (GC) services in addressing these problems at Muhammadiyah Cingkariang Orphanage. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving children, caregivers, and counselors as participants. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing techniques. The findings indicate that children experience emotional problems such as anxiety, anger, emotional instability, and social withdrawal. Guidance and Counseling services play a significant role through preventive, developmental, and responsive services, including emotional guidance, individual and group counseling, and expressive therapy. Collaboration between counselors and caregivers enhances the effectiveness of emotional support. This study recommends strengthening sustainable and needs-based Guidance and Counseling services to improve the emotional well-being and psychological resilience of children in orphanage settings. Abstract

Adolescent mental health is an urgent issue due to the rising prevalence of depression, anxiety, and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI), which increases the risk of suicide and decreases overall well-being. Efforts to improve adolescent mental health aligned with SDG target 3.4, which aims to reduce premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention and the promotion of mental health and well-being. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of peer social support and art therapy in reducing NSSI behaviors among 60 students at SMK Citra Medika Magelang using a quasi-experimental pre–post-test design with a control group. The intervention consisted of training 20 students in peer support and art therapy through role-play and dance, who then implemented these approaches to 40 additional students, while the control group received counseling teacher assistance combined with similar art therapy. Data were analyzed using t-tests and linear regression, supported by in-depth interviews. The findings showed that the intervention group experienced a significant reduction in NSSI scores (t = 6.52; p = 0.00), while the control group also showed improvement but to a lesser extent (t = 6.33; p = 0.00). Overall, structured peer support enhanced the effectiveness of art-based interventions in reducing depressive symptoms and self-injurious behavior among adolescents.

Abstract

This study examines the dilemma of productivity and reproduction faced by female crab processors in coastal Madura, specifically focusing on Kebundadap Village, Sumenep. Employing an interpretive phenomenological methodology, this research delves into the essence of participants' lived experiences through in-depth interviews. Findings reveal that female crab processors experience significant tension due to long working hours, the precarious nature of their work (often seasonal and dependent on raw material availability), and traditional gender expectations regarding household roles. This conflict not only depletes their time and physical energy but also impacts their psychological well-being. They develop diverse adaptation strategies, including meticulous time management, informal labor division with family members, and leveraging community support from fellow workers. The analysis of these findings is enriched by utilizing role conflict theory and social agency theory to understand how individuals navigate social structures and exercise agency when confronting limitations. This research offers a significant contribution to the literature on gender studies and the labour economics, particularly concerning the experiences of women in the informal marine processing sector, and provides an empirical basis for the formulation of more gender-responsive policies aimed at supporting the welfare of female workers.

Abstract

Social changes marked by the increasing participation of women in the workforce have led to the emergence of dual-income families and influenced the dynamics of gender role division within households. This study aims to analyze the interpretation of the roles of husbands and wives, the process of role reconstruction in dual-income families, and the reality of domestic labor division amidst the discourse on gender equality. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques involving in-depth interviews with married couples who both work. Data analysis was conducted interactively through the stages of reduction, presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate that the interpretation of roles is still influenced by traditional values that position the husband as the primary breadwinner and the wife as the household manager, although flexibility is beginning to emerge through cooperation and mutual agreement. Role reconstruction occurs dynamically through processes of negotiation, communication, and situational adaptation in daily life. However, the division of domestic labor still exhibits inequality, with the wife continuing to bear the primary burden of household chores even though both partners work. This situation indicates that traditional gender norms and social constructs continue to strongly influence family practices. Therefore, there is a need to foster greater self-reflection, promote more equitable communication, and reinforce the value of gender equality to encourage a more equitable division of roles in dual-income families.

Abstract

This study examines gantangan, a reciprocal social practice in Sundanese culture involving the exchange of money, food, or labor with a strict obligation for future reciprocation. Utilizing a systematic literature review and conceptual analysis, the research investigates this tradition through the lens of normative bias—the tendency to conform to both injunctive and descriptive social norms. The findings reveal that gantangan is a structured social system driven by six key psychological factors: injunctive norm pressure, reciprocal obligation, shame, descriptive norm ambiguity, communal identity threat, and cognitive dissonance. Psychologically, participation is primarily motivated by external conformity rather than genuine intrinsic sincerity. This behavioral pattern is further reinforced by commitment escalation and post-hoc rationalization. While gantangan functions effectively as a solidarity bond and a community financial safety net, it simultaneously diminishes individual autonomy and imposes disproportionate financial burdens. The article concludes that a meaningful reinterpretation of gantangan is essential to preserve its cultural essence while ensuring it does not evolve into a source of oppressive normative pressure that burdens the community.

Abstract

Female online motorcycle taxi drivers in Surabaya often face dual vulnerabilities, including economic uncertainty, domestic burdens, and threats of sexual violence in public spaces. This study aims to analyze the empowerment process of these female drivers through the Gerakan Sayang Perempuan Ojek Online (GASPOL) program. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, analyzed through Najiati's four dimensions of empowerment: equality, participation, independence, and sustainability. The results indicate that the GASPOL program successfully creates an equal, safe space and encourages active participation through informal thematic coordination groups. In terms of independence, micro-business and makeup training have proven to strengthen domestic economic resilience, coupled with enhanced self-protection through legal and physical briefing. Meanwhile, sustainability is pursued through a rotating class system, cooperative formation plans, and access to people's business credit (KUR) and social security (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan). In conclusion, this program effectively stimulates the capacity of female drivers despite ongoing budget constraints. It is recommended that the DP3AK of East Java Province expand public education to eliminate gender stigma and immediately establish collaborative governance with online transportation application companies to ensure comprehensive protection within the working ecosystem.
