Abstract

Bending stress of a pipe made of natural fiber composite is investigated in this paper. Pineapple leaf which is very potential to be developed as an alternative reinforcement in composite materials is used for this investigation. The effects of layer number and fiber orientation to the bending strength and elastic modulus are investigated. The experiments are conducted based on ASTM D790-03. The results show that the composite pipe with two layers and fiber orientation of 90º/-90º has the highest bending strength. On other hand, the composite material having one layer and fiber orientation of 45º/-45º produce the highest elastic modulus.

Abstract

Device that can convert sunlight into electrical energy is called solar modules. The solar modules are available in the market only for a static condition, while the light intensity always changes based on the incidence angle of the sun. To make the solar modules more optimal, it is always perpendicular to the direction of the sun so it is needed to use solar tracker device. Solar tracker device is commercially sold at relatively high prices. To solve this problem, it will be designed a relatively lower price one.  The design is also made to overcome the obstacles of previous studies and fulfill the wishes of prospective consumers. After the design is done, it is obtained solar tracker for solar modules with a control system microcontroller arduino uno ATMega 328. In this research, the testing parameters consist of; the angle of solar modules, solar radiation intensity, the output voltage of the solar modules and battery charging voltage when the load is given.  From the research having been done, solar modules with solar tracker have about  0.99%  angle deviation of  the ideal angle value, can increase about 65.68 W/m2 solar intensity and about 0.22 Volts battery voltage  with a fixed load.

Abstract

The high rate of tool wear is an obstacle in machining of GFRP material. This research was conducted to investigate turning behavior towards the occurrence of flank wear on HSS devices by varying machining parameters such as rake angle, spindle speed and feed rate. The GFRP of workpiece was made from resin as a matrix and the glass type Chopped Strand Mat as fiber. The rack angle of tool is varied to 5º, 10º, 15º, 20º.  Taguchi method was used to analized data experiments using orthogonal array L8. The experimental data shows that the spindle speed is the most influential parameter on flank wear with a S/N ratio of 4.10, followed by the feed rate with a S/N ratio of 3.08. Increasing rake angle can reduce wear, the smallest wear value was obtained at an angle of 20º.

Abstract

Delamination is a failure occured during hole-making processes in machining. This can affect to rejection of the product. This failure is commonly found when drilling low machinability of plastic-based materials such as thermoplastic composites. Therefore, to eliminate that phenomena, the materials are necessary to be reinforced. In this case, addition of the fiber can strengthen the composites. Besides, the way the fibers were arranged when composite manufacturing is also responsible to improve tensile strength of the composites. Improving tensile strength would also improve the shear strength of the material. Shear strength is normally adopted as indicator for machinability of materials. However, relation of shear strength improvement of composites due to fiber arrangement has been rarely discussed. Using orthogonal arrays L27 based on Taguchi, this study investigated the effect fiber arrangement on formation of delamination in drilling pine-apple leaves reinforced composites. The results highlighted that effect fiber arrangement was significant on formation of delamination at exit sides of drilled holes. Reduced rasio delamination had been identified at this side. This inferr that strengthening effect would be a good strategy in reducing delamination at the exit sides.

Abstract

In the rainy season, rice grain from the harvesting field cannot be dried properly. This condition is due to sunlight being blocked up by the cloud therefore the sunlight intensity on the earth surface is small. As a consequence many farmers become loss because this low quality rice is sale at a lower price. To overcome the above problems, it is necessary to make a dryer that not directly depend on the solar energy. In this research, a method for rice drying using light from monochrome lamp is proposed. The dryer consist of a silinder-shaped container which is equipped whith a stirer that can be adjusted according to the desired speed. In the drying chamber, hot air that regulated in the drying room is produced by incandescent lamp. The drying result obtained from this dryer using 40 rpm rotation speed reaches an absolute dry percentage of rice at equivalent of 14 %. While for stirrer rotation 50 rpm and 60 rpm the drying percentage is 8 % and 5 %. From these results, it can be concluded that the best condition for the drying process is obtained for stirrer rotation speed 40 rpm.

Abstract

In the sector of freshwater fish breeding, many fish are found dead suddenly. The cause of the  fish death suddenly can occur due to toxic water or low oxygen content in the water. In Maninjau Lake, fish died suddenly because of low oxygen content in the water. The low oxygen content in water is caused by increased ammonia from food waste and fish feces. Results in active bacteria and metamolizes by absorbing oxygen in the water.  One way to overcome this is to react with a biofilter reactor. In operation, the reactor is given an inlet debit of 1 to 3 lt / min for the test material and the inlet is worth 10 to 20 lt / min. The highest reactor effectiveness is at the debit of test material  2 lt / min and the debit of air15 lt / min. It is characterized by changes in the pH of water that returns to normal.
