Abstract

This study aims to find out the factors and causes of household problem that portrayed in the novel Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. This research is expected to be a reference for future researchers. The data source used in this research is the novel Gone Girl. In analyzing the data, the researcher applied qualitative descriptive method through a sociological approach. The data were obtained by reading, identifying, note-taking, and quoting techniques. The analysis applied the social context by Ian Watt's theory. The results of this research showed the factors and causes of household problems in the novel Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn is as a reflection of society. Internal factors were factors that came from each partner, how to resolve the conflicts, communicate, and sexual relations, while external factors were factors that from outside the partner such as rude actions against partners, rude words, the presence of other people in household relationships, problems about children, and parental intervention. The cause of household problems was the cause of an event that gave rise to something such as the occurrence of rudeness, cheating, and incompatibility.

Abstract

The study aims at finding out the types and meaning of the Tominaa language or utterances that used in Rambu Solo text. The data were analyzed and transcribed into English. The sources of the data were the Rambu solo text and the explanation from the village leader who understands well the Tominaa language. The study applied the qualitative descriptive method. The study reveal that there were 20 data from Rambu solo text which told about the life journey history of the death peolple before she/he burying. The data were transcribed based on the information from informants but it was difficult to understand because some words have two meaning and only appears in particular time. Only a few informants who could understand perfectly about the text and its meaning the new generation of Tanah Toraja already forgot about this language.

Abstract

Some difficulties of the speakers in using the diexis in the social interaction, and make the speakers misunderstand the message of utterances. The research aimed to find out the types and function of deixis in the Raya and The Last Dragon movie script. The deixis are always found in the daily interaction. The deixis were analyzed in the interaction or the utterance in which related to the people, something, place and time. The research applied qualitative descriptive through pragmatic approach in analyzing the data. The data were obtained by reading, identifying, highlighting the words that contained deixis in the utterance based on Levinson theory. The results show that there were five types of deixis used in movie script namely person deixis, time deixis, place deixis, discourse deixis and social deixis. Person deixis was the most dominant types used in movie script. Every deixis has different functions based on the types of deixis such as: person deixis has 6 functions, time deixis has 3 functions, place deixis has 3 functions, discourse deixis has 2 functions and social deixis has 5 functions.

Abstract

The script made the audience confuse and the actual social influence of the literature. The research aimed is to identify the social aspects that appeared in Encanto movie script and to found out the impacts of the main character to the society in Encanto movie script. The research applied descriptive qualitative method in order to explain the types of social aspects that are found in the Encanto movie script and the impacts of the main character to the society in Encanto movie script with sociological approach. The writer found there are 3 types of social aspects; culture aspects, social environment aspects and economic aspects. The writer also found the impact of the main character to the society which was the main character could influence other character which has an impact of changing people’s perspective on being positive in every way, to not judge book by its cover.

Abstract

This research discussed about President Joe Biden Speech Act at UN General Assembly on September 21, 2021 which aimed to find out the kinds of communication function in illocutionary act and to identify the perlocutionary act effect contained in the speech. This research use John Searle theory about classification of illocutionary act and John L. Austin theory about perlocutionary act. Then, the data were analyzed using descriptive-qualitative method. The writer used speech transcript as the instrument to find out the valid data. There were five of kinds communication function in illocutionary act that President Joe Biden used in his speech which were, assertives (giving information, remaining, assure, and statement), directives (suggesting, and requesting), commissives (promising, offering, and pledge), expressives (express his feelings), and declaratives (declare that United State has stop with war). The writer also found 4 perlocutionary act effects and responses from the audience, which were; pandemic Covid-19 donation, American government ended conflict in Afghanistan, the responses of United State government to the climate crisis, and American government will continue to be the largest contributor to humanitarian assistance.

Abstract

This research aimed to identify the kinds o family conflict that appear in Edward Albee’s dramas and to know the causes and impacts of the dramas using theory of family conflict by Ursula Lehr and descriptive qualitative method. In The Sand box drama the types of family conflict are conflict with own parents, conflict with own children, conflict with husband/wife, and self-conflict. Other causes were because mommy’s selfish characteristic and always wanted to be a dominant person, while grandma was experiencing her second childhood phase. The impacts of The Sandbox drama are the fight between the characters in the drama and the loss of harmonization in the family. In who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Drama, there are conflicts with other people, conflict with husband/wife, and self-conflict. The main causes were Martha and George as a marriage couple that always wanted to drop down on and insulted each other. The impacts are the loss of harmonization in the family, another couple (Nick and Honey) got into their problem fought to each other.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to identify types of family conflict and identify factors also the impact of family conflict on the main character in the Marriage Storymovie script by Noah Baumbach. The author uses descriptive qualitative research with a sociological approach and the theory of types of family conflict by Ursula Lehr and the theory of factor of family conflict by Sadarjoen. The results of the research show that in Marriage Story movie script, there are six types of family conflicts, namely; conflicts with parents, conflicts with child, conflicts with other people, conflict among husband and wife, conflicts of job selection and inner conflicts. Then, there are four factors that influence family conflict namely; economy, child, communication failures and jealousy. This type of family conflict and its factors then have an impact on the breakdown of marriages, fights in the divorce process, struggles for child custody, and distribution of assets.

Abstract

The aims of the research are to find out the friendship and personality through the characters in the novel and to describe the impact of personality that affect their friendship towards the characters. The research applied the library research to get as many data from the novel and some books containing theories which connect to the research. The primary data was taken from The Candymakers by Wendy Mass. The writer used a qualitative descriptive research by using sociological approach and the theory of Aristotle for friendship and Neo-Freud’s theory of personality. The result shows the result of this study the types of friendship dominated by Virtuous/ Admiration because became a guide in made a friend. The types of personality in this study dominated by Aggressive personality but the impact that affect their friendship it would be Detached personality because solve the problem of friendship.

Abstract

The research aimed to find out the types of speech acts and the function of speech acts produced by the main character which contained in Anomalisa movie script written by Charlie Kaufman. The researcher used qualitative descriptive and pragmatic approach in analyzing the data. The data were obtained by reading, identifying, classifying the words that contained speech acts in the main character’s utterance in the movie script by applying the Austin and Searle’s theories. The results show that there were three types of speech acts used in Anomalisa movie script, they were (1) Locutionary(2) Illocutionary (3) Perlocutionary, each speech acts have functions, they were (1) Locutionary which consisted of imperative, interrogative and declarative. (2) Illocutionary which consisted of directive, assertive, commissive and expressive. Then, (3) Perlocutionary which consisted of act of laughing, act of asking, act of scaring, act of inviting and act of persuading. The dominant speech act used in the movie script of Anomalisa is Illocutionary.

Abstract

The research aims to analyze the speech behavior of the main character, Kevin, who has a psychological issue, namely Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) in Split movie script, which causes Kevin to have several different characters in one body. The data analyze the process of forming and trigger factors in speech behaviour in the Split movie script using qualitative descriptive method with B.F Skinner’s theory. The result shows there are two process of forming behavior namely classical conditioning, each of them has its own purpose in taking the main personality based on their will and operant conditioning process of each character that appears to takes control of the main personality because of the response from someone who makes them have to take control that emerges through this process is due to response given by others. The trigger factor in speech behaviour based on three process namely natural selection, each character taking control of the main personality due to their own desires, cultural control triggered each one of them to takes control through the main personality that control from people around and internal condition takes control due to encouragement by someone who makes them feel fear, anger and anxiety.
