Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the types of errors made and difficulties faced by the students at SMA Negeri 1 Ingin Jaya when writing simple past sentences. This study used a descriptive design. The sample was 30 grade-10 students at SMA Negeri 1 Ingin Jaya. The instruments used in this study were tests and interviews that was given to the participants to find out the types of errors and the difficulties faced by them in writing the simple past tense. The data analysis technique used in this study were the percentage formula for test and interview analysis based on Miles et al. (2013). Based on the results of this study, it was found that there were 26% of students made an error in omission, 71,33% in misinformation and 2,67% in misordering. The highest error was in misinformation. Based on the result of the interviews, it was found that there were several difficulties faced by students in writing simple past tense sentences; the students have difficulties in determining and using the correct form of regular and irregular verbs, and they have lack of knowledge about simple past tense material.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of learning English speaking skills online during the COVID-19 period, and whether there were any obstacles encountered in the implementation of online speaking skills teaching and learning during the COVID-19 period. This study used mixed method research with explanatory sequential design, in which collecting and analyzing the quantitative data was done in the first stage, followed by the qualitative data collection and analysis in the second stage. A questionnaire was given to 20 English department students of University of Serambi Mekkah from two different batches; year 2019 and year 2020. An interview was then conducted to verify the data and to validate the data. In general, almost all students stated that learning speaking skills online was not effective, and they experienced obstacles during the learning process which resulted in a decreased interest in learning.

Abstract

This research was carried out to see factors that affect the classroom atmosphere on the effectiveness of English learning. It was done to investigate whether the noise, teacher factors, and classroom facilities had any effects on the effectiveness of learning English at SMP N 13 Banda Aceh. The method used in this research is a qualitative method, which is a descriptive qualitative design. Then the respondents in this study were grade 9 students at SMP N 13 Banda Aceh. The instrument used in this study was a questionnaire, it was distributed to students in order to determine the effect of the classroom atmosphere on the effectiveness of learning English. The data analysis technique used in this study is calculating the percentage. The result shows that from the3 factors, they are the noise factor of 50%, then the teachers effect is 45%, and 33% facilities affect the effectiveness of learning English in SMP N 13 Banda Aceh.

Abstract

Reading is one of the most challenging language skills for many students. They often find it difficult to comprehend a text they are reading, while in fact, reading comprehension is the indicator that one has mastered reading skill. The aims of this study were to find out the factors behind the difficulties faced by the students of SMP Negeri 16 Banda Aceh in reading comprehension. This was a case study using quantitative descriptive method. The result showed that difficulties frequently faced by the students in comprehending a text were their unfamiliarity with a complex word or vocabulary, difficulty in comprehending sentences, difficulty in comprehending a paragraph, difficulty in comprehending the whole selection or content of a text, and the difficulty in identifying the main idea, the plot of a text, the kinds of texts, and English structure without the help of a dictionary.

Abstract

The language that is used in teaching influences the success of teaching and learning process. When the medium used by teachers in teaching and learning process is not effective; thus, it makes the students get problem in learning English, including in learning reading skill. The aim of the study is to find out if the usage of English as the medium of language instruction in teaching students’ reading skill is better than the common way, and to find out how the students respond toward English as the medium of instruction during learning reading. This study is conducted by using one group pre-test and post-test design. The total population of this study was 60 students in the second grade (class VIII1 and class VIII2). While the sample of this study is students who are taken from class VIII1. The researcher used purposive sampling technique in choosing sample. The data were collected through test and questionnaire. The data were then analyzed by using t-test and percentage. The result of t-test calculation shows that t-test (8.34) is higher than the critical value of t-test for the degree freedom of 29, which is 1.70 at the level of significance 0.05. It means that the usage of English as the medium of language instruction in teaching students’ reading skill is better than the conventional language instruction. Based on the result of the study, the English teachers are suggested to use English as the medium of language instruction in teaching the students’ reading skill because it can increase the students' ability in mastering reading skill.
