Abstract

Gas chromatographic analysis of cuticular component was carried out to reveal differences in cuticular hydrocarbon composition among populations of Aedes aegypti that are spatially far separated. Females from two populations in Banjarmasin and one in Yogyakarta were compared. Stepwise discriminant analysis selected five discriminator peaks from chromatograms, which, by cross validation, could be used to distinguish between females of the three populations with 100% success rate. This indicates genetic differences between populations of Aedes aegypti in Banjarmasin and that in Yogyakarta.

Abstract

Gelam (Melaleuca cajuputi Powell) has been used in peat land reclamation since 1970. The present study aimed to examine the impact of the gelam revegetation on the structure and composition of vegetation on peat lands. Vegetation analyses were performed on 4 peat lands differed in vegetation. Quadrat method was applied in the systematic sampling. The results showed insignificant difference among peat lands in structure and composition of vegetation. However, some plant species found in non-gelam covered peat lands  were not recovered in gelam-covered peat lands: Adina minutiflora (Rubiaceae), Diosphyros perfida (Ebenaceae), Shorea compressa (Dipterocarpaceae), dan Baccaurea bracteata (Euphorbiaceae).

Abstract

This experiment was conducted to compare digestive enzyme activity of of nile tilafia with feed formulation contain Hydrolyzed and non Hydrolyzed Leucana leucophala Leaf Meal with Sheep Rumen Liquor Enzyme Extract.  Fish were fed isonitrogenous (± 32% crude protein and C/P ± 9,25 kkal/kg) diets for 50 days in 18 aquarium with a recirculation water system.  12 diets were  formulated to contain hydrolyzed LLM and non hydrolyzed LLM at level 10% 15% 20% 25% and 30% and one diet acting as a control (0% LLM). All diets were isonitrogenous and isoenergy.  A seven week feeding trial was carried out on triplicate groups of eight fish (9.38 ± 0,41) in 36 aquarium with a recirculating system.  Fish were fed twice daily as satiation.  Results of the present study indicate that using hydrolyzed LLMin fed formulation can be incrase protease, amilase and cellulase   enzyme activity in digestive tract nile tilapia.

Abstract

Mangrove forests, which are tidal areas, are decreasing in size due to land conversion, causing P. schlosseri habitat to shrink. Daily behavior is important to know as initial information in conservation efforts. Observation of daily behavior was carried out using the scan sampling method. The observed behavior is moving behavior, including walking and swimming activities. Swimming is done with the head position above the water so that their eyes are not submerged in the water. P. schlosseri is outside the nest when high tide occurs. P. schlosseri interacted with each other at the edge of the nest and at the mouth of the nest in the morning and afternoon. P. schlosseri preys on crabs which are usually on the banks of the river at low tide in the morning.

Abstract

Morphometric analysis has been applied on wing venation of Aedes aegypti in search for sex discriminating characters. Based on Cartesian coordinates of termination and branching points on wings, interpoint Euclidean distances were measured and standardized by distances reflecting width and length of wing. Stepwise discriminant analyses found three distances relative to wing width which, by cross validation, could discriminate male and female Aedes aegypti with a high success rate (94.6%). This demonstrated that wing venation could be used in sex discrimination of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. The finding would contribute to identification or discrimination of populations of Aedes aegypti using wing measurements as the latter approach can only be applied on exclusively male or female specimens.

Abstract

The objectives of the research were to obtain specific microalgae that are able to produce high lipid, and to determine suitable culture technique for optimum growth and maximum lipid production. Microalgae were identified, isolated, selected and then grown on IMK medium at 27-29oC under continuous light irradiation for 24 hours.   The microalgae were then selected for lipid content using Nile Red. The selected microalgae were then grown under the same medium and condition as before followed by selection based on their growth rate. To find an appropriate medium for specific microalgae, the selected microalgae were then grown on various media such as BG11, Zarrouk, MBM, PHM and BBM media.  When a medium was selected, it was then used as the medium for the nitrogen source and light intensity experiments. Those selected microalgae from each location were cultured on the selected medium at different nitrogen concentration (0,5, 1 and 2 M) and different light intensities (35, 70 and 140 µmol photon/m2/sec).  The result showed that Ciwalini has diversity index (H) 2,21. Identification indicated that ciwalini species was Chlorophyta. In this research maximum growth rate was at 2 M  nitrogen consentratiom with 140 µmol photon/m2/sec light intensity. Lipid content ranged from 11,7% - 28%. The highest lipid content was occurred on media 0,5 M nitrogen consentration and 140 µmol photon/m2/sec light intensity. Lipid Productivity ranged from 0,070,18 g/l/day.

Abstract

Purun tikus (Eleocharis dulcis) is an aquatic plant which grows in greatamount in swamp lands in South Kalimantan. This research is conducted to findout chemical content and fiber properties to know the potential utilization of thisplants. The results showed that the water content of purun tikus plant is 92,68%,extractive in alcohol-benzena content is 9,53%, lignin content is 26.4%; and thecellulose content is 32,62%. The study of purun tikus fiber anatomy have beencompleted with the results of the fiber diameter is equal to 5.89 μm; lumendiameter is 2.68 μm, cell wall thickness is 1.61 μm and fiber length is 1.68 mm.The value of the derivative dimension of purun tikus fiber obtained as follows:runkel ratio is 1.2; mulstep number is 38.4 (%), power loom is 285.45, value offlexibility is 0.45 and stiffness coefficient is 0.27. All results suggested that puruntikus plants offers potential for cellulose and fiber resources.
