AbstractDocumentation of students' scores in reading indicates that only 9 out of 36 students achieved the minimum completeness criteria (KKM) 75. Therefore, this Classroom Action Research was carried out by implementing the herringbone technique in teaching reading to solve the problems encountered by students.In this study, the steps the teacher applied in implementing the herringbone technique were: (1) selecting a proper text by adjusting to the students' reading level; (2) instructing the students to read the text individually; (3) dividing the students into groups consisting of two students for each group; (4) doing vocabulary exercise in the group; (5) giving a visual diagram of the herringbone to the students; (6) explaining the students to record the answers to the w-h questions on the diagram; (7) asking students to find out the answer and recording it on the diagram; (8) explaining the students about how each answer fits into a slot in a main idea sentence; (9) instructing them to write the main idea by using the information from the herringbone diagram; and 10) utilizing the diagram as a tool for story discussion. The herringbone technique serves as a strategy applied to improve students' ability to understand the reading. Keywords: reading comprehension, herringbone technique

A Podcast application is software that can be downloaded from play store or app store. A podcast allow students to practice English more comfortably. By using podcast applications as an effective media to develop the students’ listening skills. The objective of this research is to find out the effectiveness of podcast application to developing students’ listening skills. The sample of this research consisted of 25 students at IX grade of MTS SalafiyahSiman. The instrument of this research is a test. The quantitative data were in the form of students’ listening scores. The scores are comparing from pre-test and post-test. To achieve the purpose of this study, the data were analyzed by using paired sample t-test in the SPSS program. After analyzing the test, the researcher found that the mean score of the post-test is greater than the pre-test (77.88 for the post-test and 57.64 for the pre-test). And the results of calculating using paired t-test, the results obtained are sig.2 tailed of .000 < .05 with t-count of -9.276 which means that the average before using podcast application is lower than the average after using podcast. Thus, podcast application gives effective learning in the students’ listening skill.

Abstract YouTube is easy for students to access via mobile phones or laptops. They can lookout videos in the schoolroom or in the schoolroom anytime, anyplace which builds them also actuated and keen to acquire. Since the YouTube site is free, both students and teachers can easily lookout and upload videos. Schoolteachers from complete the world birth created their have watercourses on YouTube and regularly upload severals dissimilar academic videos that pupils get utile. Covid-19 has been declared as a global pandemic by WHO. It affects all aspects of humans’ life, including their education. Teaching and learning processes during the pandemic of Covid-19 are done online. However, many Indonesian teachers have not used this teaching media and learned is its benefits yet. Therefore, this research was used to investigate students' views on using YouTube to learn English. This research adopts survey method. In addition, interviews will be conducted after this survey to obtain more in-depth data. The participation of survey data and interview data may make the survey results more reliable relative to the subject under study. The study involved forty-four students as study participants to answer the questionnaire. In addition, this study also tracked the results of the questionnaire by interviewing 3 of 44 participants. In order to collect data, the questionnaire was distributed using Google format media (with multiple choices) and Whatshapp media (recorder) to collect interview data. The survey results show that students have a positive view of YouTube. Most participants agree that they like youtube because it can help them learn English. Another positive effect is that students’ vocabulary has been improved. Therefore, the research results show that YouTube can be used as an alternative teaching medium to improve students' English learning level, especially vocabulary learning.

This study was aimed at examining the teaching speaking process at Attanwir Language Center. This study employed a qualitative method: a case study utilized to study a phenomenon in real life comprehensively, yet such an understanding entailed pivotal contextual conditions since they tremendously had relevancy to the phenomenon of study. The data were attained through observation, questionnaire, and interview. The data were subsequently analyzed to attain triangulation data. It was grounded on literature; it was not statistic. The results of this study indicated that in conveying the materials for the learners, Direct method was mostly utilized for the process of teaching speaking at The Attanwir Language Center (ALC). Besides, the materials were not really arduous since natural conversations were prioritized. Meanwhile, there were some hindrances that occurred during the teaching speaking. For instance, it was hard to arrange and attend a regular meeting between the learners and the teacher. Additionally, they frequently ran out of the conversation topics in the circle. The result also demonstrated that most of the members coming to Attanwir Language Center (ALC) enjoyed learning English and practicing their speaking skill due to the fact that they were given different method, flexible time, and distinctive environment.

Students would vary on how successful they were in learning foreign language since they were affected by their individual differences. Learning styles as one category of individual differences was investigated and this study determined two kinds of learning styles namely auditory and kinesthetic. This study intended to compare between auditory and kinesthetic learners on reading achievement. Conducted on even semester 2019/2020 academic year in SMA Islam NU Pujon, Malang. The outcome of the analysis showed that the t-score = -608, p = .549 was the result of an independent t-test and the results indicated that the reading achievement between auditory and kinesthetic learners was not significantly different (p = .549 > 0.05). It could be concluded that the preferred learning style did not influence their reading comprehension for there might be other factors such as cognitive process. However, the teacher should know the students’ learning styles as the consideration in determining the teaching strategies that would suitable for all learning styles. In addition, learning styles might influence other skills, namely speaking, writing or listening. Thus, these topics might be a further discussion beyond leaning styles that would be investigated by other researchers

AbstractThis study aimed to measure the relationship between language learning strategies and English motivation toward English proficiency of EFL learners. SILL questionnaire, English motivation questionnaire, and also simple TOEFL test were administered to 37 diploma EFL learners in Malang. All the instruments were administered via G-form in pandemic COVID-19. The SPSS was applied to calculate the multiple regression. The results showed that there were no significant relationship between language learning strategies and English motivation; there were no significant relationship between English motivation and English proficiency; and there were no significant relationship between language learning strategies, English motivation, and English proficiency simultaneously. This results may be useful for understanding the language assessment in measuring students’ ability. To gain deep information, further researcher can combine interview method to measure students’ language learning strategies and English motivation.

The aim of this study was to measure the effectiveness of the THIEVES strategy on the reading comprehension achievement of students at Junior High School seventh grade students. This research was done in five meetings. One meeting for pretest, three meetings for treatment, and one more for posttest. In this study, researcher used quantitative methods with pre-experimental research design in which this study was only conducted in one research class. The subjects was 20 students taken from the seventh grade of Private Junior High School in East Java, Indonesia. This study was conducted during the Covid 19 pandemic so it was conducted online. Face-to-face learning in this study was conducted online using zoom and WhatsApp. In data collection, by presenting a multiple choice test consisting of 20 items for each test, the researcher performed a pre-test and posttest. The data was analyzed using SPSSS to calculate paired sample t-test.The results of statistical calculations obtained the mean score of pre-test 55.50 and 68.25 for the post-test. The t value 12.074. Based on the "Paired Sample Test" the sig. is (2-tailed) 0,000 < 0.05. So these can be stated that there is a difference mean score between the results of the pretest and posttest which means that there is the positive effect of the use of the THIEVES strategy on students' reading comprehension at seventh grade of Private Junior High School in East Java, Indonesia.
