Abstract

Bilingual education program is supposed to be one of programs that becomes solution for student whose difficulties in foreign language, even it is believed to help future career of students therefore, Pesantren being famous with Islamic curriculum implement bilingual education program. This study investigates teachers and student’s perception along with the challenges of bilingual education in Pesantren context. This study employed descriptive qualitative which interview used as primary tool to collect data. The findings reveal that both teachers and students have positive perception toward bilingual education for some reasons however, there are some challenges encountered such as having difficulties to find appropriate bilingual model, different motivation students have and time management due to another program existed in Pesantren.

Abstract

This study explored at describing what oral communication strategies used in aspeech performance by teenagers of English Massive Program Kediri andanalyzing speaking challenges encountered during communication as well thestrategies used to manage with communication breakdowns. During the speechperformance and interview, the strategies were investigated to solve students'problems. The study used a qualitative approach, which includedquestionnaires, observation, and interviews. The participants were 10 teenagers’finalist of speech competition held by English Massive Program. The datacollection was accomplished for three months. The results demonstratelinguistic and non-linguistic issues that students confronted during speechperformance. Following the data analysis, the students increased their use ofsocial affective strategy more often than other strategies. This study suggestsprovided language learners’ attention on positive strategies may contribute tolearners’ speaking performance.

Abstract

The use of online learning brings many changes to teach EFL in Indonesia. The teacher should be creative in making a medium to make the students interested in and enjoyed the lesson. The purpose of this study is to know how to use Instagram as a medium for teaching students' speaking skills and students’ response toward the treatment of Instagram. This study used Classroom Action Research (CAR) with two cycles. It involved 27 Islamic Preaching and Communication students of Institute Sunan Kalijogo Malang.  In the treatment process, the students were asked to make some videos of some chosen topics. The students were asked to fill in the questionnaires of the Instagram implementation. Based on the result of the data analysis, it was concluded that students had improved their speaking skills and given positive responses through the use of Instagram as a medium in learning English.

Abstract

Given the fact that learning nowadays mainly employs the use of technology, many studies have attempted to document the effectiveness of the technology on language learning achievement. To continue the scholarship, the present study was designed to investigate EFL learners’ speaking achievement after learning using podcast. Data were collected through interviews and Liker’s scale questionnaire. The result of the data found was analysed by using SPSS Application. The results of the research showed that the students’ speaking performance after giving treatment was significantly improved. It was proved by the data of the students’ mean score post-test was higher than in pre-test (55.60 > 77.30). It indicates that the use of podcast can empower students in speaking skill. The analysis indicated that the significant value was higher than p-value (0.05>0.000), it means that the alternative hypothesis was accepted. Moreover, the students stated interested in learning speaking toward podcast. It was proved by the mean score of students’ interests was 55.40 and considered as moderately interested.

Abstract

REWARD strategy stands for” Read, Watch, Review, and Do”, This strategy is made by the teacher-researcher as the result of the investigation during the home learning as the effects of Covid19 pandemic era at the academic year 2020/2021.  This research used class action research with one cycle. The objective of the research was to find out whether the REWARD strategy is effective in improving students’ achievement in reading comprehension  through blended learning. The participants of the research were 32 students of the ninth grade students of IX G of SMPN 1 Dringu Probolinggo.  In  collecting the data, teacher-researcher has collaborated with her colleague to complete the instruments of research, as follows: students’ reading comprehension test, field note, observation checklist, and questionnare. As the learning process of reading comprehension, the activity is divided into three phases; pre-reading, whilst reading, and post-reading that held in Blended Learning Classroom.  Those phases are dealed with the REWARD strategy for achieving the best result. Firstly, pre-reading is conducted through reading material by online ( Google Classroom), then whilst reading collaborated by watching video and reviewing the lesson by offline ( Classical Classroom), and postreading phase was done by doing assignments through online ( Google Form).The finding result showed  that the use of REWARD strategy was effective. there were 32 students who reached  the KKM point (100%) ,but  8 students shows the lower score than the preliminary test, 12 students achieves the same score with the preliminary quiz, 12 students get the higher score than the preliminary quiz. It is added by the participation of students through online and offline classroom. 84 % of students used the activities in meeting one of the process, 86% in meeting two, 88% in meeting three, and 92% in the final meeting. As a result, 87,5%  of students used the activities while reading. Based on the research, it is claimed that REWARD strategy is effective in improving students’ achievement in reading comprehension escpecially and more often it can be used by nonenglish teacher  in handling blended learning classroom as the need of this digital era.

Abstract

Abstract            The purpose of this research is to improve the students’ writing ability in descriptive text using mind mapping technique. The research was conducted for 7th grade students of MTS Tahfizh Al Madinah Malang because the researcher found that the ability of these students were lower than the passing grade set. This condition was caused by the passiveness of the students in using English both in asking or answering questions. Therefore, the researcher was intended in taking a classroom action research by applying an appropriate technique to help these students. And mind mapping technique was chosen to be applied here.            To do the research, the researcher applied Collaborative Classroom Action Research design where the collaboration between researcher and teacher is applied to plan, implement, observe, and evaluate the actions taken.The two cycles are applied here; and each cycle contains four primary stages, i.e. action planning, implementation, classroom observation, and reflection. The main data used in this research is taken from the writing test result. And the secondary data was obtained from the interview and documentation.            The students’ average writing score for the first cycle was M=71, while the targeted average score was M>75. The number of students who reached the score target was only 63%, below the targeted percentage number, 85%. Then, the action taken proceeded the second cycle was using pictures and write down keywords for those. Then, the students’ average writing score improved; it was M=77. The number of the students who reached the targeted score improved as well, 88%.  It means that there was improvement in students’ writing skill in the second cycle.            So, it can be concluded that the using of mind mapping technique could help 7th students of Mts. Tahfizh Al Madinah Malang to improve their skill in writing descriptive text.  Keywords: Writing ability, Descriptive Text, Mind Mapping

Abstract

With the growth of the technology, this study is aimed to develop a supplementary media in the form of interactive media that can help students in improving their reading comprehension skill of “Recount:Historical text” and produce a guideline to help the students using the media.  This research adapts two models of research and development from Latief (2017) and ADDIE by Taylor (2004). The final product is in the form of interactive media that can be played in android devices and PC/laptop. The media was the result of need analysis conducted by the researcher. The media was assesed by the expert using a questionnaire and tried out to the students. Then being analysed using SPSS. The result of the questionnaires by the expert for the media was 94%. Meanwhile, in mean pretest and  mean posttest of the try out, there is a difference in the amount of 30,55 which that mean posttest is bigger than mean pretests.. It can be concluded that there is significance difference in students’ reading comprehension, before and after they use the interactive media. The above explanation strengthens that the interactive media give a positive attribute in the process of learning.
