Core Subject :
Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia or Makara Hubs-Asia is a regional journal that seeks to advance understanding of human behavior in the context of Asia through the publication of empirical research articles that may stimulate further research. The word Makara symbolizes the emblem of the journals publisher, Universitas Indonesia, which means the well of knowledge that spreads across the continent. We use the word Asia to refer to people from the Asian continent, regardless of where they live. The journal welcomes research from any discipline that provides significant advancement of our understanding of human behavior in the context of Asia. The journal welcomes original research and review articles from the social sciences and humanities. Disciplines covered in this journal include Anthropology, Communication, Cultural Study, Criminology, Education, Management, Psychology, Psychiatry, Political Science, Public Policy, and Sociology. The mission of our journal is to stimulate research on human behavior in the context of Asia, which will ultimately improve our understanding of human behavior in Asia. Abstract

This article attempts to identify factors affecting participation in payment of irrigation service fees. There are five variables comprising demographic and economic of land variables were tested to find the variables that influenced the participation significantly. The five variables tested consisted of age and formal education as demographic variables; land productivity, land size, and land tenure as the economic of land variables. The results showed that formal education (demographic variable) had positive relationship and land size (economic of land variable) had negative relationship with the participation. Positive relationship between formal education and participation in payment of irrigation service fees meant that the participation increased as farmers’ education increased. Meanwhile, negative relationship between land size and the participation in payment of irrigation service fees showed that the farmers’ participation would increase as the land size owned by farmers decreased. In other words, participation in payment of irrigation service fees was higher among farmers with small lands rather than that among farmers with large lands.

Abstract

Freedom of the press and freedom of expression are formally guaranteed on the Constitution of Japan, therefore to be expected that the press and people in general have their independency vis a vis the state. The Japanese media people feel that those freedoms have been practiced, and the particular article of the constitution has been regarded as a norm by the media. But some opinions have also emerged that freedom of the press in Japan is in fact controlled in some ways by those in power. This notion is perhaps related to the practice of “self-censorship” that has been commonly thought of the Japanese media. This practice is seen in this work as closely linked to Japan’s traditional cultural philosophy. The Japan media make it as an “obligation” for themselves to voluntarily regard things related to the imperial family as something very sensitive to be touched upon. There are limitations that cannot be breached. Violations will mean that they will be sanctioned by other fellow members of the’ kisha kurabbu’ or socially punished by the public. Sometimes self-censorship is implemented by the media out of their fear of right wingers or the ruling party.

Abstract

The relationship between natural resources and development in the so-called developing world is important. The question posed in this paper is how do the different types of natural resources; oil, LNG, and forests affect the broader environment-development relations? This study shows that the presence of natural resources especially the oil and LNG industries played a major role in the Indonesian national development. In the context of Evans conceptual continuum, Indonesia has both the elements of predatory and developmental state viewed from the environment-development relations.

Abstract

This research compared tertiary irrigation management in the Municipality and Regency of Tegal, the Regency of Jembrana, and the Regency of Hulu Langat Selangor Malaysia. Malaysia has been developing water board at National and State Level. Although the two countries differed in governmental arrangements, the locus used in this research experienced the same level of governments. Verstehen has been as a general framework of this research approach. Qualitative and descriptive were the method of this research. Data are gathered using eclectic-triangulation methods and analyzed with multilevel tools. This research concluded that the tertiary irrigation in those three locus in Indonesia were not established based on functional decentralization, eventhough it has potential to do so. It is different from Malaysia which is fully centralized through deconcentration. Only the teritorial decentralization is the basic of tertiary irrigation management in Indonesia. Functional decentralization is not being practiced in tertiary irrigation management both in Indonesia and Malaysia. Empirically, Government should improve the performance of irrigation organization at the grassroot level in order to increase the whole agricultural performance which creating special local regime in the irrigation management. Furthermore, amandment to the constitution of 18th article should induce the concept of functional decentralization that was practiced in Indonesian local government system in 1920.

Abstract

A number of the mathematical problem solving are related with visuospatial ability. A good spatial conceptualization is an asset to understand the mathematical concept. Perspective understanding, geometrical shapes, and visual concept relation are crucial skills in spatial ability. These factors are also needed in mathematical performance. This research is intended to test the relationship between spatial abilities and mathematical performance. Data are collected from 220 children (7 to 11 years old) by giving them the spatial ability test which consists of spatial topology, projective, euclidis, and mathematical test. Result shows that there is a significant relationship between total spatial ability, topology, euclidis and mathematical performance. In the contrary, it shows that there is no relationship between projective spatial ability and mathematical performance.
