Abstract

The research looks into the Governor Candidate of South Sulawesi’s representation of speech acts leading up to the governor’s election in 2013, in particular into politeness and the relation between cultural speech acts in South Sulawesi society and universal politeness maxim. The research is qualitative with pragmatic approach. This research uses written data from the utterances of the South Sulawesi’s incumbent Governors printed in the biggest mass media in South Sulawesi—Harian Fajar and Tribun Timur—for 4 months, in April, May, June, and July. The data, in the form of utterances produced by the politicians, are analyzed based on maxims that are universally used to show politeness towards their addresses. In analyzing meanings, researchers also consider the cultural context in which speech acts occured in South Sulawesi society. The maxim involved tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, agreement maxim, and sympathy maxim. The research finds that the utterances by the incumbent Governors of South Sulawesi conform to politeness maxim in accordance with approbation maxim, while the utterances by the governor candidate of South Sulawesi that violate the politeness maxim tend to adhere to modesty maxim. Utterances that are analyzed show that the utterances produced by the governor candidate of South Sulawesi are more likely to conform to politeness maxim. Several utterances that are interpreted within South Sulawesi cultural context of speech acts show that there is appropriateness between cultural speech act in South Sulawesi society and maxim of politeness used in this research.

Various phenomena involving university students such as suicide and gang fights indicate that students mental health conditions of need to be worried about. Some studies had linked the public space utilization with social interaction facilitation and social cohesion, as well as social cohesion with mental health. The original contribution of this research is that it employed perceived social cohesion as the mediating variable of the predictive relationship between public open space utilization with mental health. The design of this research is non-experimental, predictive correlational. As many as 375 university students in Jakarta participated in this research (Mage = 20.8 years old; SDage = 1.4 years old). This research used convenience, incidental sampling technique. The path analysis showed that the perceived public open space utilization is able to predict mental health level through perceived social cohesion (χ2 = 0, df = 1, p > 0.05, RMSEA < 0.05).

Abstract

Unlike in business and industrial setting, researches examining organizational commitment in academic/educational realm have been scarce. In particular, because of significant role of male teacher in students’ psychological development, it is necessary to reveal male teachers’ commitment due to persistent huge disparity of their numbers as compared with their female counterparts. The purpose of this study was to investigate the predictability of traits-personality and perceived organizational support towards male teachers’ organizational commitment and also to examine the relation of five factors of personality with dimensions of their commitment. Participants for this study consisted of male teachers of private elementary schools in Jakarta. This study found that traits-personality and perceived organizational support made significant contributions to teachers’ commitment. More over, it was determined that two of five factors of personality were predictors for male teachers’ commitment dimensions. Limitations and implications of this study are discussed.

Abstract

Tempat ngèbèr, or hanging-out places where gay men in Indonesia meet, can be found in various—though relatively hidden—public places across Indonesia. Tempat ngèbèr as one of the more prominent sites in the constellation of gay serves not only as a space to find sexual partners, but also to socialize, to be open in expressing oneself, and to gain acceptance from one’s peers. Surabaya has a number of famous, well-known tempat ngèbèr, with Pataya being one of the largest places. Yet changes within the last few years have diminished its popularity. Through participant observation and non-formal interviews, this research attempts to understand how Pataya became the more prominent tempat ngèbèr in Surabaya, and what kind of changes have happened that reduced its popularity. Hopefully, this research will bring about future studies that will investigate various adaptations that can be carried out inside or outside the site itself.
