Kata Kita is a journal dedicated to the publication of students research in the areas of literature, language, and teaching. In the study of language, it covers issues in applied linguistics such as sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, critical discourse analysis, pragmatics, sylistics, corpus linguistics and others. In the area of literature, it covers modern and contemporary literature in English in the forms of printed, screened, aired or performed texts. In the field of teaching, it covers teaching materials and practices, especially those related to English Language Teaching.

This study is about address terms used by online shop sellers to female teenage and young mother customers as well as their similarities and differences in Facebook. It is supported by theories of address terms by Crystal (2009), Kuntjara (2012), Wardhaugh (2006), and Holmes (2001). She observed eight online shops, four for female teenagers and four for young mothers, ten comments from each shop. The finding reveals three types of address terms were used to female teenagers and five types of address terms were used to young mothers. The similarities are all address terms are female type address terms; formal name did not occur; and several same address terms types occurred in both types of shops. The differences are kinship terms variation in online shops for female teenagers and young mothers; intimate name and other types occurred in online shops for young mothers; and the frequency of each type.

This study entitled “Request Strategies Used by Five Street Dance Group Leaders to Their Male and Female Members in the Meetings” was conducted to know the influence of gender toward the request made by the leaders in the street dance groups’ meetings. The writer observed five young male leaders of five different street dance groups in making request to the male and female members in the meeting. The writer used the theory from Trosborg (1995) to classify the request uttered by the leaders. He found that the leaders mostly used the same request strategy, which is direct strategy to both male and female members in the meetings. The result also showed that the leaders used more indirect strategies, such as mild hints to the female than the male members probably because the leaders tried to be more polite to the female members.

This study analyzes a movie entitled Mona Lisa Smile. It is interesting that the movie contains the message about women’s liberation movement reflected through the value transformation done by one of the characters, Betty Warren, which is why we decided to emphasize on the transformation as our main focus. We attempt to reveal the process of Betty Warren’s value transformation by applying two concepts, which are the concept of Angel in the House and the concept of New Woman. We find out that Warren’s experience of value transformation goes through several stages, which are from believing in her old values, going against the new modern values, finding disappointment toward her old values, then having a conflict within herself, and as the result, starting to consider and absorb the new values. The analysis leads to the fact that patriarchal values can be so strong because sometimes, women themselves are subconsciously acting as the agents.

Harlequin novels are so popular that Harlequin romance emerges as a genre. Unlike on the heroines, there are scarcely any studies or works on the heroes, thus, I want to focus my study on the heroes of Harlequin Romance. By analyzing using the Male Sex Role in the 1980s and themes of masculinity in the 2000s, I will prove that there are four types of ideal men in the 1980s Harlequin novels whose characteristics originated from the ideal men in the society at that time, the Hypermasculine men with extreme masculinity and avoidance of any feminine sides. I will also prove that there are three types of ideal men in the 2000s Harlequin novels whose characteristics are in accordance with the Ubersexual men’s, the ideal men in the society in 2000s having positive characteristics of traditional manliness with some “feminine“ characteristics. The reason behind these changes is because of the changes in the heroines and the characteristics of men in the society in time and these push for the changes in the heroes. As a publisher, Harlequin’s goal is the highest selling rate, thus, they adjust to the market’s demand.

This journal mainly deals with the males’ and females’ compliment responses from Herbalife following up system. The focus of my analysis is the types of the males’ and females’ compliment responses that occurred most frequently by both genders, the differences or/and similarities of males’ and females’ compliment responses types. To analyze the data, I used Holmes’ (1995&2006) and Wolfson’s (1989) theories. I used Lesmana’s research (2009) as well the contrast between an online communication research and an offline communication research as supporting thesis. For the methods, I used a descriptive qualitative approach to be supported by quantitative data in developing my research.Then, from my analysis, I found that the both male and female interlocutors tended to accept the compliments given by me as the female complimenter.

This paper examines the individuation of Potter and Voldemort in Harry Potter series. To be a holistic individual, a person needs to be individuated by managing their three main archetypes. The three main archetypes are persona, shadow, and anima or animus. Potter and Voldemort have to manage their archetypes their journey as human beings. Each of them has to know his persona including his appearance, behavior and role; confront his shadow; and balance his anima. In the end, Potter manages himself to be a individuated person who can lead a good life, while Voldemort fails to be an individuated person and, as a result, he died.

This study focuses on language acquisition of a Chinese Indonesian multilingual boy, who understands three languages, English, Indonesian and Chinese, although his English seems to be dominant than others. This qualitative research was conducted to assess how his English develops. The two questions of this study are, first, how his acquisition of English question has developed, and second, what the difficulties for him to make question in English are. The result of the study is that the boy is at the third stage, a period when a child get accustomed to use auxiliary and inversion and his difficulties are in the area of vocabulary, tenses and inversion of embedded question.

This study observed the apology strategies used by five customer service officers of Mandiri Bank and five customer service officers of Mega Bank in Surabaya. The data were analyzed using the theory of apology strategies proposed by Trosborg (1995). The findings show that both the customer service officers of Mandiri and Mega Bank mostly used Checking strategy when handling the complaints. Overall, it was found that all customer service officers used seven types of apology strategies and they did not use sixteen apology strategies. This happened probably probably because they had tendency to use strategies commonly used among Indonesians and probably because they were not trained to use other strategies.

This study is aimed to reveal the type of apology strategies used by the workers to the old and young bosses. There were five workers and two bosses, old and young bosses, taken for the subjects. Finally, the research came up with the result that the way of the workers apologizing might influenced by the age of the bosses as interlocutor which made the workers produce apology utterances in different ways of apology to the old and young bosses.

This article aims to discuss Emily Gold’s Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, how it affects her way of viewing expectations coming from people around her, and the effects of the failure in fulfilling the expectations. It is found that Emily’s conditions as a PTSD sufferer makes her to perceive the expectations as rules to be obeyed and also as her redemption. When she fails to fulfill the expectations, she uses self-injury as her way of shouting out the pain and to punish herself. Later, when self-injury fails to accommodate her pain and anxiety, she decides to commit suicide to end her sufferings. In conclusion, Emily’s traumatic experience, and later her mental condition as a PTSD sufferer give a tremendous impact towards her way of perceiving expectations coming from people around her.
