This thesis examines the interpretations of Harry Potter’s and Voldemort’s wands which are related to the relationship between the wand and the owner. I am curious about finding the symbols behind the wands of Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort. The symbols that I use as the theory, reveal the power and the way they see the power through their wands. Therefore, the interpretations also reveal their relationships toward their wands. I interpret that both Harry’s and Voldemort’s wands disclose the personalities that they have. The relationship between the wands and the owner determines the success of each wizard to accomplish their goals. The affectionate relationship between Harry and his wand give mutual benefits for each of them. In contrast to Harry, Voldemort’s wand turns out to be a destructive weapon since there is no emotional attachment between him and his wand.

Children literature is one way to deliver important moral values to children all over the world. Therefore, I made Elizabeth and The Great Forest (Series 1) and Elizabeth and The Strange Island (Series 2) as my creative work for the final project. In those two books, I want to bring up some issues which are; technology cannot replace direct interaction between people, fears are not supposed to be avoided but to be faced, and mother-daughter relationship is the most important relationship. The first book will focus on technology that damages a girl’s social life and a girl’s bravery in overcoming her own fears. The second book will focus on mother-daughter relationship with sub-theme: overcoming the characters’ own fears. Through the girl’s journeys, she will finally realize that technology cannot replace human interaction, people need to overcome their own fears, and mother-daughter relationship is the most important relationship ever in her life.

This thesis aims to give pictures of the American values in an American cultural product, Bethesda’s Elder Scroll V: Skyrim. I will use ideology as the concept to show that cultural products contain ideologies or values of the dominant group. The study shows that in the games, traditional American values serve as the standard values of the American dominant group. Furthermore, I show that American values in the video game are the same, although some values are shifting. In conclusion, I find out that Elder Scroll V: Skyrim has all of the American traditional values. The medieval setting of the game somehow shifts some values like material wealth since bloodline status is appreciated. Thus, Elder Scroll V: Skyrim does represent the American society and how it should be.

This study is conducted to reveal the masculine qualities stereotyped on 9GAG by 9GAG users. There are two main theories used in analyzing this study, gender stereotype and denotation & connotation. (). First, the gender stereotype concepts used are from Brannon (2004) and Wood (2008). The first part of the study discusses 9GAG popular posts which content subtly contains of Alpha Male qualities. The result is the users show preferences on conventional masculine qualities. The second part of the study discusses 9GAG popular posts which content subtly contains of Beta Male qualities. The result is there are some specific feminine or Beta Male sides 9GAG users accept in men. In conclusion, 9GAG users still focus more on masculine qualities, especially masculine physical features, in men. Feminine qualities in men can be accepted by the community if men possess the conventional masculine physical features first.

In this creative work, I would like to highlight marriage problems in Indonesia that is faced by people from two different generation through a theatre play. In my script, there is a mother and a daughter as representatives of two different generation. The marriage problem is faced by the daughter, and the mother tries to give solutions based on her own knowledge and values. This creative work focuses on the difference of how the mother and the daughter respond to the marriage problem. I would also point out about how generational gap problem affects the way the mother and the daughter respond to the marriage problems. To put this issue into a form of entertainment, I decided to make a drama play which type of genre is almost similar to our real life.

This project brings up an issue about beauty concept in a form of children’s story book with fantasy genre for children at the ages of 12 to 15. The story shows some beauty concepts in the world through the main character’s fantastical adventure. The main character of this story is a beautiful little girl who always wants to be the most beautiful girl wherever she is. The main character thinks that beauty will help her to gain attention from everybody, and she loves to be the center of attention. The beauty concept obsesses her very much because of the beauty hegemony that appears in her society. Then through the magical journey in the four countries, the main character learns that beauty is not something as simple as the way she knows about it before. The main character experiences the false consciousness of beauty concepts from the society conditioning. In the end of the story, the main character then realizes that inner beauty is far more important than physical beauty.

This paper discusses the Alex’s desire to be acknowledged as a high class person. Alex comes from a middle class background. When she enters high school, she started to change. In this paper I analyze the changes that happened to Alex. In the analysis, I use Georg Simmel’s theory about fashion and metropolitan lifestyle. I divided this analysis into three parts. The first part, it discusses what Alex does to get the acknowledgement. Second, it discusses the reasons and result behind her desire to be acknowledged as a high class. Finally, it discusses what Alex learns from her encounter with the high class. Through the analysis I find that Faking 19 shows an important moral lesson. Being acknowledged as a high class is not the most important thing in life. The most important thing in life is when someone can be themselves.

Ika Natassa’s Divortiare trilogy is Metropop genre novels which tell about Alex’s life as a single woman and housewife. Thus, I want to focus on Alex’s way of prioritizing her career as single woman or divorcee and Alex strategies for being a good wife in Ika Natassa’s Divortiare trilogy. I am going to analyze Alex’s life with women’s roles theory related to patriarchal ideology in Indonesia. The first part of analysis discusses Alex’s way to prioritize her career and her reason. The second part explains her strategies for being a good wife in her second marriage. Also, I find that Alex does her work so hard in order to prove that she can survive on her own. I also find that she embraces the traditional feminine roles in order to get a happy marriage. Therefore, she enjoys her life as a married woman rather than a successful single woman.
